Stay Fit & Functional into your 80’s & 90’s

from PodBean · host healthybygeorge

MC shares her favorite practices for developing holiday routines to help send a message that "I care about myself". Self-care is critical during the holidays, and it can be easy to lose a sense of what is essential in our lives. Adopting routines during the holiday season is *uniquely powerful* because it provides stability at a time when life tends to become chaotic. Here's what makes holiday routines especially beneficial: 1. They create an anchor in a season of disruption During the holidays, schedules shift, travel happens, work slows or speeds up, kids are out of school, and social events stack up. A simple routine—morning movement, a consistent bedtime, a daily check-in—acts as an anchor, keeping you grounded. 2. They protect mental and emotional health The holidays amplify emotions: joy, nostalgia, loneliness, stress, grief. A routine provides your brain with predictability, which lowers cognitive load and stress hormone levels. Even a 10-minute ritual can regulate mood and increase emotional resilience. 3. They support healthier choices without willpower Holiday foods, alcohol, late nights, and travel make it harder to maintain healthy behaviors. Routine removes decision-making and defaults you back into nourishing habits: movement, hydration, sleep, mental resets, and social connection. 4. They help prevent the "holiday crash" in January A steady routine enables you to avoid the all-or-nothing burnout many people feel after the holidays. Instead of restarting in January, you *continue* with momentum already in place. 5. They create a sense of control The holidays can feel overwhelming with obligations and expectations. A routine is something you *own*. It brings a sense of agency and calm. 6. They honor your needs—not just the season's demands Holidays are often about doing for others. A routine carves out non-negotiable time to care for your body and mind. 7. They can be brief but powerful Holiday routines don't need to be long. * A 5-minute morning stretch * One daily grounding practice (meditation, a walk, or mindfulness) * A consistent wake-up time * A hydration target * A nightly wind-down All of these brief activities improve stress, energy, digestion, sleep, and mood. We have this one precious life, let's live it to the fullest. 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment.
