What Happens to Your Body When You Touch the Earth
Grounding — also called earthing — means direct skin contact with the Earth's surface: bare feet on grass, sand, or soil. Can it really help chronic pain and inflammation? In this episode, chronic pain researcher Dr. Mary Catherine George gives you the honest version — 25 years in pain research, zero hype. The theory: the Earth's surface carries a mild negative charge, and free electrons moving into the body may act like antioxidants, neutralizing the free radicals involved in inflammation. The early evidence: a pilot study using thermal imaging on chronic pain patients showed a visible drop in inflammation after just 30 minutes of skin-to-Earth contact, and studies on delayed-onset muscle soreness found grounded participants reported less pain — with measurable differences in circulating immune cells. And the honest part, from a researcher and not an influencer: the studies are small pilots, not large randomized trials, and grounding is NOT a replacement for your treatment plan. But it costs nothing, has no drug interactions, and pairs naturally with a short walk, morning sunlight, or a mindfulness practice — which is exactly why it earned a place in her non-drug chronic pain toolkit. 🔑 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: ✦ What grounding (earthing) actually is — and what it isn't ✦ The free-electron theory: how skin-to-Earth contact may work like an antioxidant ✦ The thermal-imaging pilot: visible inflammation drop after 30 minutes ✦ What muscle-soreness studies found: less pain + measurable immune-cell changes ✦ How to try it: 20–30 minutes, bare feet on grass, sand, or soil — completely free ✦ Indoor grounding mats: why the evidence for them is even thinner ✦ The honest limits: small samples, pilot studies, no large trials yet ✦ Where grounding fits in a chronic pain toolkit — alongside, never instead of, your treatment plan 📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. Why Your Loved One Might Be Depressed (Even If They Don’t Seem Sad)
Depression in older adults often doesn't look like sadness at all. Clinicians call it "depression without sadness" — no tears, no visible sorrow, just a flat, numb, nothing feeling. And because it doesn't look like depression, it's one of the most under-recognized health issues in adults over 55. In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George gets personally honest — including about being on medication herself — and walks through the three quiet signs of late-life depression that are easiest to miss: 1️⃣ NO ANTICIPATION — You book the trip, schedule the event… and feel nothing. The clinical word is anhedonia: the part of your brain that registers pleasure goes quiet. You catch yourself performing excitement instead of feeling it. 2️⃣ THE SHRINKING WORLD — It creeps up slowly: friends move away, you hesitate to say yes, and staying home always feels easier. The question that reveals it: "When's the last time I said yes to something because I WANTED to?" 3️⃣ BODY COMPLAINTS WITHOUT A CAUSE — Fatigue, achiness, dull headaches, sleep that's never enough — but the doctor says your tests look fine. Late-life depression often shows up in the body, not in tears. "I'm just getting older" is not always the real explanation. The question that ties it all together: Are you sad — or do you just not feel anything? Sadness is loud; it announces itself. Flatness is quiet, and "at least I'm not crying" is not the same as fine. MC also shares what actually helps: saying the truth out loud to one trusted person ("I haven't felt like myself lately — not sad, just nothing"), scheduling things anyway, small steps instead of white-knuckling it alone, and the surprising power of doing something in service of someone else. 💙 If you're struggling, you don't have to figure this out alone. Aging Well Isn’t About Diet — It’s About What You Believe
What if aging well isn't about diet, exercise, or genetics — but about what you believe about getting older? The research on positive aging is stunning: people with positive beliefs about their own aging live 7.5 years longer than people without them. Measured in people in their 50s and 60s, tracked for 23 years. In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George breaks down the science of aging beliefs and self-perception of aging — and the three places negative "old age" self-talk quietly does its damage: your memory, your movement, and your stress response. You'll learn the three traps and the three small daily actions that counter them: 🧠 MEMORY — Why "senior moment" self-talk ("I'm losing it") makes you more anxious and makes remembering harder — and the once-a-day reframe that breaks the loop ("My brain is busy. It'll come to me.") 🚶 MOVEMENT — Walking speed is one of the strongest longevity signals we have: an adult whose walking speed drops sharply over two years has a 90% higher risk of dying. But in studies, people who reframed their beliefs about walking improved their speed — not because their body changed, but because their belief did. 😤 STRESS — How "am I too old for this?" thinking triggers cortisol and affects your heart — and the one-sentence morning journaling practice that, in just four weeks, improved memory, balance, and walking speed. Plus: why nearly half of adults over 65 CAN improve in memory and movement, how our culture's aging story works against us, and MC's own reframe after two hip replacements — "I'm a warrior who has survived." 📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. The Science of Laughter What It Actually Does to Your Body PART 2
The science of laughter is stranger — and stronger — than you'd think. In Part 2, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George walks through what laughter actually does to your body: how it releases your brain's own natural opioids, what it does to your blood vessels and heart health, and what a 15-year study of 53,556 people found about sense of humor and living longer. The research covered in this episode: 🧪 The wall-sit experiments — comedy audiences could tolerate discomfort significantly longer after a show, evidence that laughter raises your natural pain threshold 🧠 The 2017 Finnish PET-scan study that confirmed it: laughing triggers endogenous opioid release in the brain — your own built-in painkillers ❤️ Dr. Michael Miller's University of Maryland experiments on the endothelium (the active lining of every blood vessel you have): across 300+ measurements, blood vessels were 30–50% wider after funny movies than stressful ones — a vascular effect his team compared to aerobic exercise or a statin 😂 The heart disease questionnaire: patients with heart disease were 40% less likely to find everyday situations funny 🇳🇴 The HUNT study (Nord-Trøndelag, Norway): 53,556 people followed for 15 years. The surprise? It wasn't how much you laugh or how funny you are — it's how readily you PERCEIVE things as funny. In women, that cognitive component was associated with 48% lower all-cause mortality, 73% lower cardiovascular mortality, and 83% lower infection-related mortality. And because this channel doesn't over-claim: MC is honest about the limits — these findings are observational, laughter is not a replacement for your medication, and the famous "children laugh 400 times a day, adults only 15" statistic turns out to be a myth (the real adult number is closer to 17). What survives the scrutiny is still remarkable: real belly laughter is free, has no side effects, and works like a health multiplier — a genuine coping resource for aging, chronic pain, and mood. ▶ WATCH PART 1 FIRST — how a health psychologist ended up doing stand-up right after Jim Gaffigan: https://youtu.be/prD87qI_lZg?si=6vDMidaYE-4faLEd 📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. The Science of Laughter: What It Actually Does to Your Body PART 1
What are the real health benefits of laughter? Not the greeting-card version — the measured, physical effects: what a deep belly laugh actually does to your muscles, your breathing, your nervous system, and your aging body. To find out, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George did something terrifying: after six years of silent PhD research, she signed up for a stand-up comedy class at Gotham Comedy Club in New York — open mics, bombing in front of classmates, writing a "tight five," all of it. And on her performance night, Jim Gaffigan walked in and did the set right before hers. In Part 1 of this two-part episode on laughter and health, MC shares that story and starts unpacking the science: why laughter isn't an emotion but a whole-body sensation, what a 15-year study tracking 53,000 Norwegians suggests about laughter and living longer, and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar's six experiments — from the lab to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival — designed to answer whether laughter really releases endorphins. She's honest about the research, too: some laughter studies over-claim, and she separates what's solid from what's hype. Part 1 ends right as the Dunbar experiments get interesting — Part 2 digs into the results and what they mean for your health as you age. 🔑 IN THIS EPISODE: ✦ Why a health psychologist took a stand-up comedy class — and performed after Jim Gaffigan ✦ What laughter physically is: a muscular, respiratory, whole-body workout for your nervous system ✦ The 53,000-person Norwegian study on laughter that no doctor ever mentions ✦ Why laughter research is full of over-claiming — and what the honest version says ✦ Robin Dunbar's endorphin experiments, from the lab to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival ✦ Why doing something that scares you might be exactly what your health needs 📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. How Long You Can Stand on One Leg Says a Lot
How well are you aging? These four simple aging tests — the grip strength test, the sit-to-stand test, the single-leg balance test, and the walking speed test — can be done at home in under ten minutes and reveal more about healthy aging than the number on your scale. In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George shows you exactly how to run each at-home aging self-check: how to measure grip strength with an inexpensive hand dynamometer, how to time your sit-to-stand from a chair, how long you should be able to balance on one leg by age, and what your usual walking speed says about your health and longevity. The key: track against your own baseline — not population norms — so you catch early warning signs of muscle loss, fall risk, and mobility decline while there's still time to act. Then she covers what the metrics can't measure: the research linking grip strength and walking speed to cognitive function and brain health, how repetitive negative thinking undermines your health, why depression in older adults often shows up as "depression without sadness" — no tears, just lost interest and energy — and the landmark research on positive self-perception of aging: people with a positive attitude toward their own aging live 7.5 years longer on average. 🔑 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: ✦ The 4 at-home aging tests: grip strength, sit-to-stand, single-leg balance & walking speed ✦ What each test screens for: muscle loss (sarcopenia), fall risk, frailty, and cardiovascular health ✦ When a declining result means it's time to talk to your doctor ✦ Why grip strength and walking speed predict cognitive performance — not just physical health ✦ How to stop repetitive negative thinking with a simple mindfulness reset ✦ The overlooked signs of depression in adults over 55 ✦ How mood and mobility feed each other, in both directions ✦ Her monthly health check-in routine — after losing 55 lbs, a hip replacement, and knee osteoarthritis ✦ Why a positive aging mindset is a health multiplier that adds years to your life 📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. The 10,000 Step Rule Is Wrong! Here’s Why
Did you know that 10,000 steps — the number baked into your smartwatch, your fitness app, and every corporate wellness program — was never based on science? It came from a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in 1965. And for decades, that arbitrary number has been quietly discouraging millions of older adults from moving at all — because if you can't hit the "minimum," why start? In this episode, Dr. Mary Catherine George — health psychologist and your guide to intentional healthy aging — breaks down the new science of movement for older adults: why short bursts of exercise ("exercise snacks") are just as powerful as long workouts, what movement does to your brain, and how she personally fits 10-minute sessions with weights into her day — before her coffee is finished. 🔑 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: ✦ The surprising origin of the 10,000 steps goal — and the number the research actually supports (7,000) ✦ What "exercise snacking" is and why the science behind it is remarkable ✦ How just 4.5 minutes of vigorous daily activity is linked to a 32% reduction in cancer risk ✦ What BDNF is — and why researchers call it "fertilizer for the brain" ✦ Why people who haven't been active get the LARGEST benefit when they begin ✦ The real-life way Dr. George snacks on movement: calf raises at the coffee maker, farmer's walks on phone calls ✦ What the EXERT trial says about light exercise and cognitive decline 📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. I Wish I Knew This Sooner About Chronic Low Back Pain
Chronic Low Back Pain: When to Seek Help, What to Try First, and Lessons From Back Surgery This episode discusses chronic low back pain with the host and his brother Noel, a nurse practitioner with 30+ years of experience who previously had back surgery for spinal stenosis. They describe how back pain can start subtly, come and go, and worsen with poor posture and body mechanics, often improving temporarily with over-the-counter medications or support like a cart. Noel shares that he waited too long, ultimately needing surgery after exhausting options like physical therapy, and emphasizes practical changes such as supportive shoes, mattresses, pillows, chairs, and better posture, along with core strengthening and weight loss. They stress choosing an experienced surgical center, understanding recovery expectations and risks (including infection), having adequate home support after surgery, and being cautious with NSAID overuse while considering alternatives like topicals, acupuncture, and acupressure. 00:00 Back Pain Warning Signs 01:02 Early Symptoms Explained 02:01 When to See a Doctor 02:41 Exhausting Non Surgical Options 03:35 Shoes Posture and Core 05:23 Surgery Recovery and BLT Rules 06:46 Choosing the Right Spine Center 08:28 Post Op Discomfort and Weight Loss 09:19 Injections Relapse and Long Term Habits 14:00 Hospital Discharge and Home Support 18:01 MRI Findings and Alternative Therapies 20:06 Medication Caution and Final Takeaways 22:06 Wrap Up and Subscribe 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. Scientists Can’t Explain Why This Extends Your Lifespan
Why “Irrational” Acts of Kindness Are a Powerful Health Habit (Self-Expansion, Awe & Aging Well) Mary Catherine George (Healthy by George) argues that spontaneous, slightly embarrassing “irrational” gestures—like buying expensive artisanal chocolates and giving them to a neighbor—are legitimate health behaviors that boost well-being as we age. Drawing on relationship psychology and Arthur and Elaine Aron’s Self-Expansion Theory, she explains that novel, unexpected shared experiences (like an unplanned day trip) can increase closeness, reduce boredom, and improve satisfaction, even when the experience isn’t perfect. She also describes research on awe (Dacher Keltner’s work) linking awe experiences to improved vagal tone and lower inflammation markers, plus studies showing instructed “awe walks” and daily awe are associated with more positive emotions, less distress, fewer physical complaints, and less stress. She highlights evidence that spending money on others, acts of kindness, and expressed gratitude can improve well-being and aging self-perception, and offers practical ideas for scheduling unexpected outings and gestures. Discover simple wellness tips to improve your daily health habits. See how small changes create lasting positivity in your life. My Sudden Knee Lock Taught Me This
A sudden knee lock-up stopped me in my tracks, leaving my leg completely frozen and impossible to bend or straighten. Dealing with a joint that physically refuses to move is a terrifying experience. In this video, I walk through the moments leading up to my knee locking, the immediate panic of being unable to walk, and why I ultimately decided that an emergency room visit was the only safe option. This account is for anyone who has felt their mobility vanish without warning or suspects they may have a mechanical issue rather than a simple strain. My journey highlights how quickly a fitness routine can be derailed by a sudden knee lock-up. I break down the confusion between general joint soreness and a true mechanical blockage, sharing what you should look for if you experience similar symptoms. Understanding when to seek urgent care for knee pain can save you unnecessary stress and help you identify the right path forward for your recovery. After waking up with a knee that suddenly locked and sent her to the ER, MC—a health researcher with arthritis in both knees and two prior hip replacements—shares the plan she built to reduce pain, improve function, and delay or avoid knee replacement. She explains how knees absorb load during walking and highlights that losing weight can significantly reduce force on the knees; she has lost 55 pounds. MC details her low-impact, slow-and-steady approach to strengthening quads, glutes, calves, core, and especially ankles (circles, points/flexes, toe/heel raises, and band work), plus exercises like bridges, leg lifts, sit-to-stands, kettlebell carries, and backward walking. She also discusses posture, getting help with form, nutrition and supplements, topical pain relief (Aspercreme and Voltaren), reduced Tylenol use, and the possible role of injections. 00:00 Knee Locks Up 00:26 ER Reality Check 01:07 Building a No Surgery Plan 02:14 What Knee Arthritis Means 03:01 Weight Loss Wins 03:38 Strength Training Basics 05:13 Daily Moves and Safety 06:13 Form Posture and Core 06:53 Ankle Strength Secret 07:45 Progress Pain and Creams 08:44 Injections and Future Hope 10:05 Final Motivation and Subscribe Subscribe for weekly health and fitness recovery breakdowns, and comment below if you have ever had a joint freeze up unexpectedly. 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. Rewards Don’t Work | Here’s Why
Why Rewards Backfire (and the Better Way to Stay Motivated) Stop relying on traditional reward systems that kill your motivation. Learn why separating tasks from rewards often causes procrastination. Many people struggle to finish difficult tasks because they treat the reward as a prize to be earned only after the work is done. This strategy frequently backfires, making the effort feel like a burden to be endured rather than a process to be enjoyed. If you rely on these motivation tips to get things done, you might be setting yourself up for failure. This method explains how to apply the principle of temptation bundling. Instead of waiting until the end, try combining the reward directly with the difficult task itself. By only allowing yourself the reward while you are actively working, you create a positive association with the effort required for task completion. This shift in how to stay motivated helps you sustain focus without the typical mental resistance. This approach effectively improves your self discipline by making the journey as satisfying as the result. If you are looking for better productivity hacks that actually work, start applying this technique to your next project. Subscribe for weekly productivity breakdowns and comment below with a task you plan to tackle using this strategy. Use temptation bundling to fix your task motivation. Stop waiting for the end of a project to finally feel good. Relying on a reward at the finish line often ruins your focus. By setting up a system where the prize arrives only after the work is done, you unintentionally label the task itself as something to be avoided. This creates a mental barrier that leads directly to procrastination. A more reliable productivity strategy involves temptation bundling. Instead of treating your reward as a carrot on a stick, combine it directly with your work. If you enjoy a specific audio series, only permit yourself to listen to it while cleaning or doing data entry. This approach shifts your psychology. You stop viewing the effort as a burden that must be suffered through. By pairing the enjoyment with the labor, you build a consistent habit and improve your discipline without needing extra willpower. This is how you reclaim your time and energy. Fiber Works Better Than You Think | Here’s Why
Mounjaro Plateau After 3 Years: What I’m Doing Now (Calorie Tracking, Fiber, Protein & Strength Training) MC shares that after reducing her Mounjaro dose to 12.5 due to intolerable side effects at higher doses, her heartburn, fatigue, and nausea are now manageable, but her weight loss has stalled with 10–15 pounds left to lose. To stay engaged, she plans to track calories, build a reward system for consistency, increase fiber (including fermentable options) and water, prioritize protein (aiming for 100g/day), and do resistance training Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Her goals are to see whether eliminating sugar reduces inflammation linked to chronic knee pain and hand arthritis and whether it improves slightly elevated cholesterol before an August wellness visit and blood test, with the 90 days ending September 6th. She shares turning down ice cream from a colleague, discusses supporting healthy aging at 68, mentions being on a GLP-1 drug for nearly three years, and invites viewers to join a similar whole-foods-based challenge. Can you actually complete a sugar free challenge? I tested my chocolate addiction over nine days to see if quitting sugar is possible. This video documents my personal sugar free challenge, focusing on the difficult reality of breaking a dependence on sweets. If you struggle with chocolate addiction or feel like sugar controls your daily routine, this breakdown offers a realistic look at the withdrawal and mental shifts involved in a short-term detox. I share the specific struggles I faced during these nine days and why I am now considering extending this to a 90 day journey. By removing sugar from my diet, I began to see food differently. This experiment provides insights into the psychological battle of changing eating habits and managing cravings for anyone attempting their own sugar free challenge. Subscribe for weekly healthy habits breakdowns, and let me know in the comments if you have ever tried to quit sugar for more than a week. 00:00 90 Days No Sugar 00:40 Why Sugar Matters 01:35 Rules And Exceptions 02:42 Day One Temptations 03:55 Join The Challenge 05:03 Cravings And GLP1 06:37 Mindset And Check Ins 07:34 Health Story And Wrap 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. When GLP-1 Stops Working: My Honest Update
GLP-1 Side Effects, Dose Adjustments & Whole-Food Habits for Healthy Aging MC of Healthy by George shares what to do when experiencing side effects from a GLP-1 drug, explaining they couldn’t tolerate 15 mg/week and reduced to 12.5 mg/week to ease symptoms like heartburn while working with an insurance wellness coach. They emphasize a comprehensive approach—calorie tracking, testing apps (dropping a photo-based one), and using the Hum Band’s new nutrition features—alongside whole-food eating that has noticeably changed their taste buds, making packaged foods and overly sweet desserts unappealing. After nearly three years on Mounjaro, they note slow progress with muscle gain and weight loss, prefer gradual change to avoid a gaunt look, and are focusing on sleep and adjusting diet to address slightly elevated cholesterol. They discuss planning an enjoyable, mindful birthday meal and encourage viewers to invest in long-term wellness through food, movement, rest, and stress management. 00:00 GLP-1 Side Effects Fix 00:51 Tracking Apps Tested 01:50 Channel Intro Mission 02:35 Whole Foods Change Taste 04:28 Slow Loss Muscle Gain 05:32 Cholesterol Food Tweaks 06:15 Dessert Hacks Birthday Plan 08:02 Wellness Beyond Insurance 09:42 Let Go Old Identity 10:33 Weekly Routine Callout 11:01 Final Sendoff 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. The Movement Secret Neurologists Don’t Talk About
Qigong for Healthy Aging: Calm Your Nervous System, Sleep Deeper, and Support Vagal Tone After noticing Qigong classes at work and hearing a science-minded colleague say it calms her nervous system like nothing else, the host begins exploring this ancient Chinese movement practice to address chronic low-grade stress, poor sleep, and aging concerns. He explains Qigong as slow intentional movement combined with rhythmic breathing and meditative awareness, and connects its effects to the autonomic nervous system, the HPA axis, cortisol, and the vagus nerve. He describes how extended exhales can stimulate the parasympathetic system and improve vagal tone, which declines with age and is linked to inflammation and cognitive decline. Citing recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses, he notes reported benefits for stress reduction, clinically meaningful sleep improvements, cognitive function, and reduced frailty, while emphasizing it complements—rather than replaces—resistance training. These Eye Exercises Won’t Cure Everything—But They Help
Can Yoga Help Aging Eyes? What Research Says About Glaucoma, Dry Eye & Eye StrainMC, a health psychologist and researcher, discusses common age-related vision changes—presbyopia, dry eye, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration—emphasizing regular eye exams and early detection. She explains that yoga and eye exercises cannot reverse presbyopia or cure structural eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal conditions, but research suggests yoga may serve as a complementary approach, especially for glaucoma via stress reduction and improved vascular regulation. She cites studies showing yoga-based interventions (breathing, gazing) can reduce intraocular pressure and improve visual field measures, and that eye exercises may improve functional near-vision performance and reduce eye strain without changing prescriptions. Techniques covered include Trataka (with cautions), palming, structured eye movements, and pranayama (slow exhale, alternate-nostril breathing), alongside general wellness and medical guidance. In this video, we explore aspects of eye health and the importance of regular eye exams for maintaining clear vision. Focusing on healthy aging, we discuss how these practices contribute to overall longevity and personal health and wellness. What Happens When You Follow Medical Advice? | Real Results
Why Men Avoid the Doctor: Prostate, Testosterone, and Getting Him to Book the Appointment The host and nurse practitioner Mary Katherine discuss why many men avoid medical care—citing a study where 72% of surveyed men would rather clean toilets than see a doctor—and how women can encourage partners and family members to prioritize checkups. They compare how women are socialized into healthcare earlier, while men often delay visits until marriage or symptoms become severe, and note men may minimize or struggle to communicate symptoms. The conversation covers common midlife issues including weight gain, diabetes denial, benign prostatic hypertrophy (urinary frequency/nocturia, weak stream), the need for prostate cancer screening before certain BPH medicines, and testosterone decline affecting erections, fatigue, metabolism, and bone health. They emphasize baseline physicals (BP, labs, cholesterol, liver enzymes, thyroid, possible EKG), morning testosterone testing, lifestyle changes, avoiding unregulated OTC supplements, and establishing a trusted primary care relationship despite access barriers. The One Thing You’re Not Doing to Live a Longer Life
The Science of Silence: How Quiet Heals Stress, Boosts Creativity, and Protects Your Brain as You Age Dr. Mary Catherine George explores why silence is powerful, especially in a world engineered for constant noise and stimulation. Drawing on research, she explains how chronic sound activates the HPA axis, raises cortisol, and contributes over time to inflammation, high blood pressure, damaged blood vessels, and increased risk of heart disease and stroke, with the WHO ranking environmental noise as a major health stressor. She shares findings that even two minutes of silence can lower cortisol and improve cardiovascular relaxation more than soothing music, shift brainwaves toward calmer, more creative states, and that longer periods of silence may stimulate new cell growth in the hippocampus. The episode also links chosen boredom and the brain’s default mode network to insight and creativity, and invites listeners to practice small pockets of daily quiet to support memory, anxiety, resilience, and aging well. Our modern lives are often consumed by the constant hum of the digital interface, leading to widespread digital addiction. This video explores the benefits of a digital declutter, emphasizing the power of silence in reclaiming our mental space. Consider a smartphone detox or social media detox to improve your well-being. 00:00 A Moment of Silence 01:37 Why Silence Matters 03:30 Noise Is Making Us Sick 06:25 The Science Surprise 07:54 Silence Heals the Body 08:35 Brainwaves and New Neurons 11:15 Boredom Sparks Creativity 15:58 Why We Avoid Quiet 19:13 What Silence Feels Like 21:39 Silence and Aging Well 23:04 Try This This Week 24:38 Closing Thoughts and Goodbye 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. Can You Afford to Retire? What Most People Get Wrong
Retirement Anxiety, Financial Uncertainty, and the AI Economy (What the Research Says) A health psychologist and director of clinical research shares her growing uncertainty about whether she can retire in the next three to four years amid an unstable economy, rising costs, and rapid AI-driven change. She describes retirement anxiety as being fueled less by concrete facts than by not knowing what will happen with Social Security, Medicare, taxes, inflation, healthcare costs, and longevity, noting surveys and reports showing many older Americans are delaying retirement and many workers expect AI to transform work soon. She discusses the value of working with a fee-only financial planner, the risk of a post-retirement identity crisis for people strongly identified with their work, and reframing paralysis into possibility through shorter planning windows, mindfulness, and addressing avoidance. She emphasizes planning for meaning and purpose beyond work, staying curious, and building supportive teams. 00:00 Retirement Fear Confession 01:47 Why It Feels Uncertain 03:14 Retirement Anxiety Research 06:28 AI Economy Shockwaves 07:54 Start Planning Anyway 08:46 Money Questions and Advisors 10:02 Identity After Work 13:18 Hopeful Mindset Shift 16:52 Mindfulness for Anxiety 18:51 Meaning Purpose and Wrap 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. Financial Stress Waking You Up at Night? Here’s Why
Retirement Anxiety, Financial Stress & Aging: Reframing the Fear (A Health Psychologist’s Guide)Retirement Anxiety: Reframing Financial Stress, Longevity Fear, and Fixed-Income Worries Dr. Mary Catherine George, a health psychologist, shares how an upcoming retirement party triggered her own late-night anxiety about whether she can afford to retire in New York, where skilled living facilities can cost $7,000–$12,000 a month. She explains that financial stress in aging is widespread and often driven by uncertainty, citing a University of Michigan poll showing 53% of adults 50+ felt financial stress, over half cut back on daily expenses, and one in three fear their money won’t last; stress was highest among those ages 50–64 who haven’t decided to retire. She outlines three common forms of financial stress—fixed income amid rising costs, longevity anxiety, and life transitions like retirement or widowhood—and describes how chronic financial stress harms sleep, immunity, heart health, and cognition. She recommends reframing money worry, building financial literacy, getting specific with numbers, asking for help, and using mindfulness to regulate the nervous system, emphasizing that fear is not a financial plan. This video features a woman speaking directly to the camera, interspersed with scenes of people walking, a sunset with an outstretched hand, and volunteers serving food. It highlights the crucial role of a nonprofit organization and effective volunteer management in community efforts. The woman's expressions range from smiling to concerned, as she appears to be presenting information throughout the montage. 00:00 Retirement Math Panic 02:49 Reframing Money Fear 04:06 Financial Stress Data 06:21 Health Toll of Worry 08:03 Three Stress Patterns 12:27 Control and Mindset Shift 16:54 Get Specific With Numbers 18:26 Ask for Help 19:50 Calm the Nervous System 21:45 Nighttime Plan and Wrap Up 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news... 🎙️ ABOUT DR. Retirement Depression Is Real—Here’s What to Do
Retirement, Identity & Mental Health: Grief, Depression, and the Emotional Shift No One Talks About In Mental Health Month, MC, a health psychologist, explores the often-unspoken emotional aftermath of major life transitions—especially retirement—drawing on her experience after her husband’s death 10 years ago and her current fears about retiring after nearly three decades of work. She describes the post-retirement identity crisis, including lost purpose, loneliness, regret, and the “heaviness” that can resemble grief or depression, noting a 2025 study where 20% of retirees felt unprepared for the emotional shift. MC distinguishes normal transitional grief from clinical late-life depression (sleep/appetite changes, fatigue, loss of interest), emphasizes that depression is serious but treatable, and shares that 70% of older adults recover with adequate treatment and support. She reviews Atchley’s retirement stages (honeymoon then disenchantment) and highlights evidence-based supports: naming symptoms, seeking medical and therapy help, building purpose (not busyness), and prioritizing social connection. Our nervous systems often respond to uncertainty by making us hear only parts of what a doctor says after difficult news. This video explores the **psychology** behind navigating new health changes, focusing on how we process information and cope with the emotional impact. Dr. George shares research-backed tools to manage **anxiety** and **stress** during these times, ensuring you can tend to the emotional layer of a diagnosis. Women’s Heart Attacks Don’t Look Like Men’s—Here’s What to Watch For
Women’s Heart Attack & Stroke Symptoms: The Atypical Warning Signs You Can’t Ignore MC shares a personal ER visit after experiencing sudden facial tingling and numbness around her lips and tongue, using it to highlight how heart attacks and strokes often present differently in women than in men. She explains that women may have atypical heart attack symptoms such as jaw pain, heartburn/indigestion, unusual fatigue, nausea/vomiting, upper back or neck pain, and shortness of breath without chest pain, and notes that warning signs can appear days or weeks before an event. For stroke, she contrasts FAST with women’s more unusual signs, including sudden severe headache, hiccups with other symptoms, confusion/brain fog, nausea/vomiting, and unusual dizziness or unsteadiness. Her key message is to take new or unexplained symptoms seriously, avoid delaying care or self-diagnosing, and share symptom checklists to help women advocate for timely treatment. ⏱️ EPISODE TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 Tingling Symptoms Start 00:41 Telehealth to ER Decision 02:24 ER Stroke Team Workup 03:11 Why Women Dismiss Signs 04:00 Heart Attack Symptoms Women Miss 05:47 When to Get Checked 07:36 Stroke Symptoms Beyond FAST 08:21 Atypical Stroke Signs in Women 10:38 Key Takeaways and Share List 12:14 Advocate and Closing Resources 📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop 💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#newsletter 🎙️ ABOUT DR. When Something Changes: The 3 Things Every Older Adult Needs to Do After a New Diagnosis
Got a new diagnosis — or supporting someone who did? This episode is for you. When a doctor delivers unexpected health news, most of us hear the word and stop hearing anything else. Unlocking the Superpower of Aging: Harnessing Self-Awareness
Self-Awareness: The Aging Brain’s Superpower for Fear, Pain, Fatigue & Emotional Balance Mary Catherine, a health psychologist, shares her own fear about aging in a fast-moving AI world and reframes aging as a time when a key “superpower” can grow: self-awareness. She explains self-awareness as the ability to observe thoughts, emotions, body signals, and behavior from both an internal and external perspective, and notes that older adults often have a more stable sense of self and stronger self-reflection. She describes how self-awareness can help manage pain (through early intervention, mindfulness, self-hypnosis, breathing, and interrupting cycles), chronic fatigue (by noticing patterns and pacing), emotional regulation (avoiding toxic people and spirals), and coping with loss, drawing on her experience after her husband’s death. She recommends practical tools like body check-ins, naming emotions, and journaling or regular self-audits to protect wellbeing and strengthen mind-body connection and neuroplasticity. 00:00 AI Anxiety and Aging 01:11 Channel Mission and Subscribe 02:02 Self Awareness Superpower 02:36 Stage Moment of Presence 03:24 What Self Awareness Means 04:14 Why It Improves With Age 05:52 Using It for Pain Relief 08:10 Managing Chronic Fatigue 09:32 Emotional Regulation and Boundaries 10:58 Coping With Loss 12:02 Protection From Toxic Stress 14:01 Daily Practices to Train It 15:52 Name Feelings and Journal 18:35 Closing Encouragement and Call to Action 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment. What Happens When Depression Shows Up
Depression in Older Adults: Signs, Stats, and Why It’s Treatable at Any Age A health psychologist shares how a simple journaling prompt unexpectedly triggered a painful childhood memory and led to several days of depression that was initially mistaken for fatigue and work stress, highlighting how easily depression in older adults can go unrecognized. The episode explains that depression is not a normal part of aging and may appear as persistent irritability, fatigue, aches and pains, sleep or appetite changes, withdrawal, loss of interest, and hopelessness, with vulnerability increased by grief, isolation, retirement and purpose concerns, chronic illness, and past trauma. It cites CDC data that 20% of adults 55+ experience a mental health concern, nearly two thirds of people over 60 with depression are never diagnosed, depression rose 60% from 2010–2019 without increased treatment, and a looming shortage of geriatric psychiatrists. The speaker urges seeking help through primary care, psychiatry, therapy, medication, social connection, routines, Telehealth, and crisis resources including 988, SAMHSA, and NAMI. 00:00 Journaling Triggered Memory 01:26 Why Depression Matters 02:17 How Depression Looks Aging 03:25 Why Older Adults Vulnerable 05:20 Shocking Stats Hidden Crisis 07:28 Spotting Warning Signs 10:35 Treatment Works Any Age 12:05 Breaking Therapy Stigma 13:46 Personal Update Hope 14:44 Resources Final Takeaways 15:59 Subscribe Closing Message 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment. Embracing GLP1: A Journey Beyond Judgment
GLP-1 Weight Loss Shame & Stigma: My 3-Year Mounjaro Journey (50+ lbs Down) and the Inner Dialogue The speaker shares their personal experience using a GLP-1 medication (Mounjaro) for nearly three years, losing over 50 pounds and reaching a weight not seen since their late teens, while still struggling with an internal dialogue of fear, shame, and self-judgment shaped by decades of diet culture. As a health psychologist with 25+ years of research experience, they explain how GLP-1 medications mimic a natural hormone that signals fullness, slows digestion, and regulates blood sugar, and note these drugs were developed for type 2 diabetes but shown in studies to support significant weight loss. They discuss media controversy, stigma, and data on judgment and secrecy, emphasize obesity as a complex medical condition, and encourage viewers to use evidence-based tools without apology, consult a doctor, and leave judgment behind. 00:00 Breaking the Silence 01:50 Meet the Creator 02:33 How GLP One Works 04:14 Why Diets Failed Me 06:17 Letting Go of Shame 08:23 Stigma and Judgment Data 10:33 Obesity Is Medical 11:45 Millions Use These Meds 13:41 The Shame Within 15:31 Your Health Your Choice 16:58 Three Key Takeaways 17:36 Final Encouragement 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment. Master Your Mind: Techniques to Reduce Chronic Pain Naturally
Turn Down Chronic Pain Naturally: Mindfulness, Self-Hypnosis, and the Brain’s Pain Gate Health psychologist Mary Catherine George explains how chronic pain—especially common with aging—can become a brain-based, multifactorial experience shaped by perception, culture, emotion, and repeated signaling (central sensitization), rather than a simple body-to-brain signal. She describes the 1965 Gate Control Theory of Pain, noting how non-painful sensations, fear, attention, expectations, and descending brain signals can open or close pain “gates” in the spinal cord. The episode focuses on two scientifically supported, low-risk tools—mindfulness and self-hypnosis—that can reduce the unpleasantness of pain, strengthen prefrontal regulation of fear responses (amygdala), and activate the brain’s pain-suppression system (periaqueductal gray), supporting natural modulation via endorphins and serotonin. She encourages brief daily practice, mentions MBSR and VR-based pain programs, and shares accessible resources for learning. 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment. GLP-1 Weight Loss Stalled? Here’s What Actually Changed
Weight Loss Stalled on a GLP-1? Why the Scale Isn’t Moving (and What to Track Instead After 50) A medical researcher in her 50s shares why her GLP-1 (Mounjaro 12.5) weight loss stalled after starting in December, explaining how hip replacement surgery, complications, hospitalizations, and stopping and restarting the medication contributed to a plateau and a brief 5-pound gain. She discusses her long history with PCOS, emotional eating, and overcoming past habits through intentional tracking and an “80/20” approach. Despite minimal scale change, she reports improved body composition—more muscle, lower fat percentage, and fewer inches in her waist and hips—after regaining mobility and focusing on strength training. She emphasizes prioritizing muscle with aging, tracking progress beyond the scale using measurements, bioimpedance tools like a Hume band, or a DEXA scan, and notes the risk of muscle loss on GLP-1 drugs. 00:00 Weight Loss Stall Intro 00:38 Channel Focus and Subscribe 01:04 Why I Stalled Last Year 01:33 Hip Surgery Complications 03:54 Emotional Eating History 05:21 Scale Stuck but Body Changing 06:52 Why Muscle Matters Aging 07:33 Strength Training Plan 08:48 Track Inches Not Pounds 09:53 Tools DEXA and Bioimpedance 11:13 Final Encouragement and Wrap 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment. Peptides After 50: What Actually Works vs What’s Dangerous
Peptides After 50: What’s Safe, What Works, and What to Avoid (Collagen, Creatine & GLP-1s) A medical researcher with 30+ years in neurology discusses why peptides are suddenly everywhere and what’s realistic and safe to consider after age 50. He explains what peptides are, then breaks them into skincare, supplements, and injectable/medical categories, emphasizing evidence and risk vs. benefit. He highlights oral collagen peptides as the most studied for older adults, citing human research for improved skin hydration/elasticity, joint support, arthritis/chronic pain relief, and possible bone density benefits, and recommends choosing hydrolyzed/third-party tested products. He also promotes creatine as an underused option for muscle preservation, healthy aging, and cognition. He describes prescription GLP-1 drugs (Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro) as well-studied but with side effects, and warns against gray-market injectable peptides like BPC-157, TB-500, and others due to limited human data and contamination/dosing risks. 00:00 Peptides Everywhere Now 01:14 What Peptides Are 02:38 Collagen Peptides Benefits 04:26 Creatine For Over 50 05:20 GLP One Peptide Drugs 07:27 Gray Market Peptide Risks 10:03 Skincare Peptides Tips 12:01 Final Thoughts Subscribe 🌿💚 📌 Disclaimer: The views shared here are solely for education and entertainment. She argues for focusing on wellness and optimizing health now (referencing Peter Attia’s “Medicine 3.0”) rather than only treating diagnosed illness. Key daily practices include consistent movement (flexibility, stretching, weights, balance work, walking), plus meditation, mindfulness, and journaling to manage stress from world events and the economy.
