In the  94 comedy classic Dumb and Dumber when Mary tells Lloyd (played as only he can by Jim Carey) that he has a one-in-a-million chance to get a girl like her he responds as only he can - "So you're telling me there's a chance!"  For teams who started worried about a 0-2 start, there is a chance that they will make the playoff but it is small.  Since the playoff era began in 1970 400 teams started 0-2 and 38 of them made the playoffs, a 9.5% rate while not great it is better than Lloyds odds with Mary.  The most recent team to start 0-2 and make the playoffs were the 2018 Houston Texans, who began 0-3 and then made the wild-card game, losing to the Colts, 21-7. While I don't think it is likely for Cincy to finish this bad, the average finish for the teams starting 0-2 is around 6-10 (remember, most of this happened during the 14/16 game a year schedules), and historically  Cincinnati follows that pattern averaging right on that number when they start 0-2.   Cincy also has never made the playoffs after a 0-2 start.  They have started 0-2 19 times, tied for second most with the Giants after the Saints and Colts with 21 times.  8-8 is the best season after an 0-2 start for Cincinnati, and they have done that three times (03,96,84), never making the playoffs. But all hope is not lost.  Four teams that started 0-2 made the Super Bowl, with the Cowboys being the first to do so in 1993, in the first year of their mid-nineties run, where they started 0-2 and finished 12-4 (best record ever for an 0-2 team, tied with the 2013 Panthers, who lost in the division round) and clobbered the Bills in the Super Bowl (sorry Andy) 30-13.  The Patriots were next going to the 96 Super Bowl before losing to future Mean-Machine player-coach Brett Favre and the Packers after a 0-2 start.  The Patriots in 2001 lost their starter, Drew Bledsoe, to start 0-2.  The following week they started a little-known backup, Tom Brady, who finished 11-3 and had a bit of help in the Tuck Rule game to make the Super Bowl and beat the heavily favored St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl.  Finally, that little-known QB Brady was on the wrong end of this as the Giants started 0-2 before ending the Patriot's perfect season with the helmet catch in 2007. Of course, if you start 2-0 you have like a 63+% chance of making the playoffs, and something like 70%(ish) of Super Bowls teams all time started 2-0.  63% is a long way from 9.5%.  But 9.5% is better than nothing, so hope springs eternal for the fans of the Bengals along with Titan, Panthers, Falcons, and Raiders fans.  Like Lloyd, they have a chance, small as it may be.  Note also like Lloyd's chances this may not actually apply to the Falcons, Panthers, and Raiders, as they all seem genuinely terrible, and thanks to Stathead.com for the data.
