On a rest day that felt anything but restful, Carlos hiked up Irvine Trail to admire the blooming camas lilies, their purple petals bright against the mountain greens. He called it his “mountain of joy,” a place that never failed to lift his spirit—even when the climb left him breathless. From 3.12 kilometers away from his fridge, he scrambled up a rocky face with a grin and determination. At the summit lookout, with downtown Victoria and the Olympic Mountains stretched below, he paused to soak in the view.
