Stokley Carmichael

Stokely Carmichael, later known as Kwame Ture, was a prominent figure in the American Civil Rights Movement and a leader in the fight against racial injustice. Born in Trinidad in 1941, Carmichael immigrated to the United States as a child and became involved in activism while studying at Howard University.As a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or SNCC, Carmichael advocated for Black self-determination and popularized the slogan "Black Power." He emphasized the importance of political and economic empowerment for Black Americans and called for a more radical approach to achieving civil rights.Carmichael's ideas and activism had a significant impact on the Civil Rights Movement, inspiring Black communities to assert their rights and challenge systemic racism. Later in life, he became an advocate for Pan-Africanism and continued to fight for social justice causes until his passing in 1998.
