Stopping Hitler’s Atomic Bomb in Norway

During World War II, Norwegian resistance fighters and British commandos targeted the Vemork chemical plant to sabotage the production of heavy water, a rare substance the Nazis required as a neutron moderator for their secret atomic bomb project.Following the catastrophic failure of the glider-borne Operation Freshman, a small team of elite Norwegian skiers successfully executed Operation Gunnerside by scaling a steep ravine and infiltrating the facility to destroy its production line without a single shot being fired.The resistance concluded their campaign in February 1944 by sinking the ferry SF Hydro in the deepest part of Lake Tinn, effectively destroying the last of the Nazis' heavy water supplies and hindering the German nuclear program enough to prevent it from influencing the war's outcome.
