Day 68 — “Cities of Refuge”📖 Numbers 35As Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land, God establishes something remarkable—Cities of Refuge. These were special places where someone who had accidentally caused a death could flee for protection until the situation could be carefully examined.In a world where revenge and retaliation were often immediate, God created a system that protected both justice and mercy.The Cities of Refuge reveal something profound about the heart of God.God is holy, and justice matters to Him. Life is sacred, and wrongdoing cannot simply be ignored. But God is also compassionate. He makes room for mercy. He provides protection for the vulnerable and ensures that judgment is not driven by anger or haste.These cities were strategically placed throughout the land so that anyone in need of refuge could reach one quickly. Their very existence reminded Israel that God cares deeply about both righteousness and compassion.But these cities also point us to something even greater.In the New Testament, we see the ultimate fulfillment of this idea in Jesus Christ. Just as someone fleeing danger would run to the city of refuge for safety, we run to Christ as our refuge from sin and judgment.He is the place where justice and mercy meet.At the cross, God did not ignore justice—sin was fully dealt with.
