Story of Scripture--Day #75 "The Faithfulness of God Continues" (Deuteronomy 34)

from Restoration: Where New Life Begins · host John Baldwin

Day 75 — “The Faithfulness of God Continues”📖 Deuteronomy 34The book of Deuteronomy closes with one of the most powerful and emotional moments in the Old Testament. After leading Israel for forty years through the wilderness, Moses climbs Mount Nebo where the Lord allows him to look across the land that had been promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. From that mountain, Moses sees the Promised Land stretching before him—land he had spent decades leading Israel toward.Yet Moses will not enter it.Because of his earlier disobedience at Meribah (Numbers 20), the Lord told him he would see the land but not step into it. It is a sobering reminder that even great leaders are accountable before God. Moses was faithful in many ways, but God still holds His servants to His word. After seeing the land, Moses dies there on the mountain, and Scripture tells us something remarkable: God Himself buried Moses in the land of Moab. To this day, the exact location of his grave is unknown. The people of Israel mourn Moses for thirty days, grieving the loss of the man who had led them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and across the wilderness. Under Moses’ leadership, they had seen God perform extraordinary miracles—plagues in Egypt, manna from heaven, water from the rock, and the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai.Yet even with Moses gone, God’s work is not finished. The chapter ends by pointing forward to Joshua, whom Moses had already commissioned as the next leader of Israel. Joshua is described as being “full of the spirit of wisdom,” because Moses had laid his hands on him. Leadership passes to the next generation, and the mission of God continues. The final verses honor Moses in a profound way. Scripture says there had never been a prophet like Moses—one whom the Lord knew face to face, who performed such mighty signs and wonders. Moses was unique in his relationship with God and his role in Israel’s history. But even Moses was not the center of the story.Deuteronomy 34 reminds us of a powerful truth about God’s work throughout history:God buries His servants, but His mission keeps moving forward.Leaders come and go. Generations rise and fall. But the faithfulness of God continues. The promises He made to Abraham are still unfolding. The story of redemption is still moving forward. And that truth still applies today. No single leader carries the entire work of God. No individual is indispensable. God graciously allows people to participate in His purposes for a season, but the mission always belongs to Him.The same God who worked through Moses would soon work through Joshua. And the same faithful God is still carrying out His plan today. The faithfulness of God continues from generation to generation.Support the show
