Strength, Riddles, and Living Water: Samson and Jesus (Day 132)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

Where does true strength come from? Today in the Book of Judges, we follow the beginning of Samson’s public life. Though he is a Nazirite set apart for God, Samson’s story is a whirlwind of impulsive desires, violent outbursts, and clever riddles. We see him tear a lion apart and strike down thirty men over a bet, proving that while the Spirit of the Lord gives him power, his character remains a work in progress. In the Gospel of John, Jesus stands in the Temple during the Feast of Booths. As the priests perform the ritual water pouring, Jesus cries out with a different kind of power: the offer of "Living Water" to anyone who thirsts.Today’s Scripture:📖 Judges 14–15 – Samson insists on marrying a Philistine woman, leading to a wedding feast defined by a riddle about a lion and honey. When his wife betrays the answer, it sparks a cycle of revenge involving burning grain fields and a battle at Lehi, where Samson kills a thousand men with the jawbone of a donkey.📖 John 7:14–44 – Jesus arrives halfway through the Feast and begins to teach. The crowd is divided: some believe He is the Christ, while others want to arrest Him. On the last day of the feast, Jesus invites those who are thirsty to come to Him, promising that "rivers of living water" will flow from within those who believe.📖 Proverbs 11:29–12:7 – Wisdom for our daily conduct: "Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind." Solomon reminds us that "a good man obtains favor from the Lord" and that the "root of the righteous will never be moved."RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
