Struggle With Confrontation? Listen To This
from The Health and Sport Show
Have you ever said anything in the heat of the moment that you have instantly regretted? Tom walks you through some tips on how to avoid this situation again so you don’t let your emotions get the better of you and cause a situation you cant take back. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we are confronted by a stressful situation we enter “flight or fight mode”, a natural biological response intended to ready us for a physical challenge ahead. This response also occurs, however, when entering a sporting arena and upon euphoria or excitement. The region of the brain responsible for this mode is the amygdala. This controls the operation of all your bodies motor functions. The most useful process in these situations is to understand why your body is feeling the sensations it is. This can help you circumvent an out of control amygdala. The ten minute rule is useful for written communication and confrontation. Anger is all part of fight or flight. Give your self at least ten minutes to calm your response down. Do the right thing. Apologise and explain your emotional reaction. BEST MOMENTS ‘When our thinking brain gives feedback to our emotional brain and we perceive ourselves as being in a safe space we can then quickly shift the way we experience that high arousal state from being one of fear to one of excitement.’ ‘The hippocampus and prefrontal cortex help the brain to interpret the perceived threat.’ ‘You really want to click that reply button but now is not the best time to articulate your response.’ ‘It’s probably best not to blame the amygdala directly and go through a big scientific neuro-flowchart.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbAhttps://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/https://instagram.com/elevate_healthuk?utm_medium=copy_link ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player.
