Study reveals workers bet to cover monthly expenses.

More than half of South African workers are turning to sports betting and online gambling to cover monthly expenses and repay debt, according to Old Mutual's Savings and Investments Monitor 2026. The study found 53% of workers are betting, with 42% doing so frequently. Old Mutual warns the trend is eroding household savings, deepening debt and exposing financially vulnerable families to greater financial risk.
