Superman The Movie (1978) | Episode 127-This Podcast Takes Tokens(Vigilantes & VHS Summer 7 of 10)

We revisited the granddaddy of modern superhero flicks, the 1978 Superman The Movie. Turns out, nostalgia might be doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Don't get us wrong, the practical effects hold up surprisingly well for the era, and Christopher Reeve is absolutely iconic with his masterclass in playing Clark Kent and the Man of Steel as two entirely different people. But did we really need four minutes of opening text flying at the screen, followed by a 48-minute origin story before he even puts on the suit? We're breaking down the absolute campiness of Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor and his bizarrely low-stakes plan to blow up the California coast just to score some premium real estate. We also dive into the behind-the-scenes chaos, like Marlon Brando getting paid $3.7 million while he refused to memorize lines and read them off a baby's diaper instead. Throw in a discussion on Superman's highly questionable method of turning back time to save Lois Lane while ignoring the rest of the destruction, and you've got an episode that looks at a beloved classic through some slightly older, more cynical eyes Love quoting old movies?
