Bloodsport(1988) | This Podcast Takes Tokens-Episode 118
We're stepping into the Kumite to talk about the 1988 martial arts cult classic, Bloodsport. Sure, the movie claims to be based on the "true story" of Frank Dux , but considering practically none of his claims can be verified, we're treating this purely as the magnificent work of fiction it clearly is. We break down Jean-Claude Van Damme's questionable acting, fantastic skills (and his mandatory, unprompted splits) , the absolute absurdity of the tournament rules , and the random phantom cat noises littering the soundtrack. Despite the completely unnecessary subplots and the sheer lack of a cohesive storyline , there's no denying the action in the ring still holds up today. Grab your favorite Betamax tape and get ready for a nostalgic rewatch of a movie that somehow manages to be both terrible and entirely entertaining all at once What happened Love quoting old movies? Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle | Episode 117-This Podcast Takes Tokens
We’re breaking our own sacred 20-year rule because Deric decided to cash in a "golden token" and drag Ryan kicking & screaming into the 2017 Jumanji reboot. To everyone's shock—including his own—the resident reboot-hater actually liked it, dare we say, loved it. We dive into how Jack Black somehow delivered the most convincing performance of a teenage girl in cinematic history and why the chemistry between The Rock and Kevin Hart is undeniable, even if we’re tired of seeing them together(we still want more). We also get into the nitty-gritty of the game mechanics, from the hilarity of exploding over a piece of cake to our very serious grievances about a PlayStation that somehow uses cartridges? It’s a rare look at a reboot done right, even if the CGI jaguars look like they were rendered on a toaster. Love quoting old movies? Join the conversation LIVE every Thursday on YouTube! Jumanji(1995) | Episode 116-This Podcast Takes Tokens
"This Podcast Takes Tokens for those who seek to find a way to connect with the childhood they left behind."This week, we roll the dice on the 1995 Robin Williams classic, Jumanji. We dive deep into the production lore, including why the director was terrified to hire Robin Williams, the dark theory that Van Pelt is actually a manifestation of Alan’s father and a few theories of our own.We also break down the surprising box office numbers—did you know this movie only made $11 million its opening weekend? Ryan was shocked too —and we share our honest (and slightly brutal) thoughts on those CGI monkeys that definitely do not hold up in 1995 or 2026.In this episode:Retro Ramble: We discuss our favorite board games of all time, featuring zombies and public transit.Stale Popcorn: Ryan visits a classic record shop in KC , and Deric catches the Running Man remake on a long flight.Gum Under the Seat: We read your comments.Token Scores: Don’t miss the final score on this episode, we almost did. True Lies(1994) | Episode 114-This Podcast Takes Tokens
This week we dive deep into the 1994 action-comedy classic, True Lies. Join hosts Deric and Ryan as they break down James Cameron’s high-octane spectacle starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. We explore the film's massive $115 million budget, its impressive $378 million worldwide gross, and why it remains a top-tier Arnold flick 30 years later. From the incredible practical effects involving real Harrier jets and massive bridge explosions in the Florida Keys, to the hilarious casting of Tom Arnold and the iconic performance of the great Bill Paxton as "Carlos the Jackal”. We revisit the nostalgia of watching this one with family and debate whether those stunt doubles look a little too obvious in the 4K restoration. Love quoting old movies? The Misunderstood, Last Action Hero | Episode 113 This Podcast Takes Tokens
This week, we are rewatching a movie that was vastly ahead of its time: Last Action Hero.Despite an $85 million budget and an action pedigree featuring director John McTiernan and writer Shane Black , the movie was slaughtered at the domestic box office by Jurassic Park. Arnold Schwarzenegger was so devastated by the initial flop that he avoided people for a week. But time has proven the critics wrong. We break down why this movie is the perfect, self-aware satire of the 80s and 90s action genre. We dive into the bizarre cameos from Danny DeVito to Robert Patrick, the brilliance of Charles Dance wearing a t-shirt thanking Alan Rickman, and the alternate cinematic universe where Sylvester Stallone starred in the Terminator movies.Love quoting old movies? Dogma | Avengers for Catholics? (Episode 112-This Podcast Takes Tokens)
We are stepping onto the train to discuss Kevin Smith’s controversial 1999 religious fantasy crusade, Dogma. Deric selected this one, calling it his favorite Kevin Smith film, while Ryan reluctantly revisits to see if it holds up beyond his high school nostalgia. We break down how Kevin Smith pulled off this massive, star-studded project on a $10 million budget (and where that money clearly didn't go *cough*poopy-trip*cough*). We also discuss the massive backlash the film received upon release, the legendary casting of George Carlin and Alan Rickman, and the wild story of how the movie's rights were held hostage for years by a real life villain before finally getting a 4K release. The Warriors-1979 (Episode 111-This Podcast Takes Tokens)
Can you dig it? This week, we are diving into the chaotic streets of 1979 New York City to talk about The Warriors. In a classic This Podcast Takes Tokens mix-up, Ryan and Deric accidentally watched two entirely different versions of the same movie. Ryan showed up ready to praise the stylized, comic-book-inspired Director's Cut. Deric, on the other hand, endured a commercial-riddled theatrical cut on Pluto TV and completely lost his mind trying to figure out why a gang of mimes and baseball players were intimidating and how a NYC street gang couldn't navigate a simple subway map.In this episode:The Main Feature: A breakdown of the absurd gang outfits, the 1970s DJ "text chain," and the highly questionable gun accuracy in the final shootout.Retro Ramble: We debate the greatest anti-heroes of all time. Street Fighter (1994): Saving The World For $20,000,000 Bison Bucks! (This Podcast Takes Tokens Episode 109)
Grab your quarters and join us as we step into Shadaloo for a rewatch of the 1994 cult classic, Street Fighter. In this episode, we dissect why this "cartoon of a movie" feels like the 90s answer to Batman '66—unapologetically campy and overflowing with "wonky movie tech".We dive deep into the legendary performance of Raul Julia as M. Bison, and how he "hammed it up in the right way" while a "prima donna" Jean-Claude Van Damme struggled through a $10,000-a-week habit on set. From "Bison Dollars" (should've been Bison Bucks!) to the absolute disaster that was Blanka, we rate the film’s faithfulness to the source material and its inexplicable worldwide box office success.Does Guile’s flat-top translate to live action? Is the "Action-Pose" ending the dumbest thing in cinema history? And why didn't we get a single split from JCVD? Tune in to find out! Love quoting old movies? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (Episode 104-This Podcast Takes Tokens)
Join us as we celebrate our Two-Year Anniversary by traveling back in time to 1993 (and then to 1603) to discuss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. For Deric, this movie is a misunderstood gem that arguably outshines TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze thanks to its ambitious time-travel plot. For Ryan, it is quite possibly one of the worst films ever made, maybe even worse than The Mask, plagued by terrifying animatronics and a disappointing villain. We break down the baffling physics of the time-travel scepter (why do they swap SOME clothes?), the tragedy of Casey Jones being relegated to hockey loving, honor guard babysitter, and the return of Corey Feldman as Donatello. Do the new suits work or is the visual horror of mutant turtles without Jim Henson’s touch, spotty? Garden State (Episode 101-This Podcast Takes Tokens)
"You gotta hear this one song. It'll change your life, I swear."This week, we are putting on our headphones and screaming into the infinite abyss of 2004 with Zach Braff’s indie darling Garden State. For Ryan, this movie was a "religious" experience in his early 20s, a perfect snapshot of aimless angst and sidecar motorcycles. For Deric, it’s a nostalgic trip back to a time when The Shins were the only band that mattered.Join us as we discuss whether Natalie Portman’s character is the ultimate "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" prototype, why Jim Parsons wearing a suit of armor at the breakfast table is still the funniest visual gag of the 2000s, and if the ending line ("This is the start of something big") is romantic or painfully cringe. We also break down the wild "Desert Storm Trading Card" investment strategy, the shocking production speed (filmed during Natalie Portman’s spring break?!), and answer our Retro Ramble question: What movie has the best soundtrack of all time?Grab your helmet and hop in the sidecar—it’s time to see if Garden State is truly profound or just overly medicated.Love quoting old movies? Pleasantville (Episode 099-This Podcast Takes Tokens)
"Honey, I'm home!"This week, we are zapping ourselves into the black-and-white world of the 1998 cult classic Pleasantville. For Ryan, this movie is the "keenest, swellest thing" ever made, a perfect blend of nostalgia and meaningful storytelling. For Deric, it’s a chance to roast Tobey Maguire’s "Eeyore" voice and question why 50s sitcom characters never had toilets.Join us as we discuss the brilliance of casting Don Knotts as a TV repairman (or is he God?), the undeniable 90s heartthrob energy of Paul Walker, and how a movie about a fake TV show became a surprisingly deep commentary on change, repression, and art. We also break down the box office numbers (it flopped?!), praise J.T. Walsh’s final performance, and answer our Retro Ramble question: What is your favorite classic TV show (pre-1990)? Does this film hold up in glorious technicolor, or has it aged like Stale Popcorn? Grab your remote and find out!Love quoting old movies? Join the conversation LIVE every Thursday on YouTube! Back to the Future Part II (Episode 098-This Podcast Takes Tokens)
Great Scott! We are finally firing up the flux capacitor to correct a timeline error. We missed this gem back in October, so we are kicking off the new year by traveling back to 1989(where its 1985) and then to 2015, and then to 1955, to cover Back to the Future Part II.For Ryan, this trilogy is sacred ground, though he still insists Part III is the best one. For Deric, the 2015 aesthetic looks less like the future and more like "neon spray-painted garbage." Join us as we debate the "Claudia Wells vs. Elisabeth Shue" Jennifer Parker swap, give Thomas F. Wilson his long-overdue flowers for playing four different characters, and try to understand the logic of the "Chicken" insult. We also discuss why the 80s thought fax machines would be the peak of communication and answer our Retro Ramble question: What video game do you want to see adapted into a movie? (Spoiler: We have strong feelings about Metal Gear Solid).Grab your Pepsi Perfect and hoverboards—it’s time to see if this sequel hits 88 miles per hour or if it runs out of plutoniumLove quoting old movies? Trading Places:Looking good, Deric!- Feeling good, Ryan! (Episode 096 This Podcast Takes Tokens)
This week, we are wagering one dollar to see if the 1983 comedy classic Trading Places is as valuable as gold or if it’s as worthless as orange juice concentrate in 1984. We’re swapping opinions to discuss the powerhouse duo of Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy, the intricacies of the frozen concentrated orange juice market, and whether Jamie Lee Curtis is the unsung hero of this film.Join us as we break down the nature vs. nurture debate, discuss the wild 80s comedy landscape, and answer our Retro Ramble question from last week: What is your favorite activity in the snow now versus when you were growing up? Caution: Friend Zone Ahead For The Next 10 Years(Episode 095: Just Friends-2005)
Is the friend zone a real place, or just a 2005 plot device designed to let Ryan Reynolds wear a fat suit? This week, we are revisiting the holiday rom-com Just Friends. For our Ryan, this movie is a nostalgic slam dunk that he quotes regularly, but his wife... let’s just say she thinks Chris Brander is a bit too "cocky" to be likable.Join us as we break down Ryan Reynolds' transition from his Van Wilder era to leading man status, debate whether Anna Faris’s manic pop star energy is the best part of the film (spoiler: she drank a lot of Red Bull), and try to figure out why everyone in New Jersey drives with their windows down in the dead of winter. We also uncover a depressing alternate ending that thankfully stayed on the cutting room floor and discuss what we think happened to Chris Klein. Does this movie still crack us up, or has it aged like a burnt batch of Christmas cookies? As always, don’t miss out on the Retro Ramble, Stale Popcorn and Gum Under The SeatIf you're a millennial who grew up quoting this movie, or just love a good nostalgic conversation, then this is the podcast for you!Join us as we take a LIVE trip down memory lane, every Thursday on YouTube!Got questions or comments?Email us: [email protected] Or Comment Below!Check out the polished and refined podcast episodes wherever you get your podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/2N5V4jBFzMxq0xgzGupLAW?si=FzrMm9AARjycAEUlDQ9isQ Want some sweet podcast swag?https://pecantreedesign.etsy.com/listing/1850510998/this-podcast-takes-tokens Want to support us and get just a little more, like access to all the past Live episodes?Check out our Patreon: patreon.com/ThisPodcastTakesTokens #ThisPodcasTakesTokens #RetroRamble #StalePopcorn #GumUnderTheSeat #Podcast #Nostalgia #ChristmasComedy #ChristmasMovies #JustFriends #RyanReynolds #AmySmart #AnnaFaris #ChrisKlein #CultClassic #RomCom

Is Elf A Cotton-Headed Ninny Muggins Or A Certified Christmas Classic? (Episode 094-Elf-2003)
Does the best way to spread Christmas cheer involve singing loud for all to hear, or is it by avoiding Will Ferrell movies entirely? This week, we settle the score with a festive face-off: after Deric sat through The Muppet Christmas Carol, Ryan is returning the favor by diving headfirst into the candy-cane forest of Elf (2003).Ryan has always found Buddy the Elf a little… much, while for Deric, this movie is a holiday staple, a timeless classic filled with childlike wonder and syrup-covered spaghetti. Join us as we discuss whether James Caan is the ultimate straight man, why Peter Dinklage’s cameo is perfection, and if the third act’s sleigh chase holds up or falls apart like a house of cards. We also discuss if Chris Farley would have made a better Buddy and share some of our own holiday traditions. It’s time to ring in the holiday season, and we are kicking things off with a cozy trip back to 1992 to discuss The Muppet Christmas Carol. For Ryan, this isn’t just a movie; it’s the definitive Christmas film, a nostalgic hug that has aged like fine wine. For Deric... well, let's just say he views Kermit as the "vanilla ice cream" of the puppet world and has a bone to pick with the musical numbers.Join us as we debate whether Michael Caine is the greatest Scrooge of all time, why the Ghost of Christmas Past looks like a Dark Crystal reject, and if a pig and a frog really understand how DNA works. We also fantasy-cast a Michael Bay version of A Christmas Carol and pitch Muppet Die Hard (Fozzie as Sgt. Al Powell, anyone?). Does this holiday classic still warm our hearts, or has it aged like spilt milk? We also reveal the legal reason the director was allowed to use the last name "Focker" in the first place. The Anxiety Comedy: We analyze how the movie successfully uses awkward silences and escalating tension to make the audience feel Greg Focker's pain, living up to the critic who called it "comedy that's as likely to have you gnawing your fist in agony of embarrassment."The Male Nurse Stereotype: We discuss the constant and unfair ridicule Greg faces for being a male nurse, despite having aced his MCATs.The CIA Agent's Flaws: We break down the humorous flaws in Jack Byrnes' CIA persona and his lack of knowledge about his florist "cover story."The Jinxy Obsession: The discussion covers Jack's disturbing obsession with his Himalayan cat, and the amusing trivia that Robert De Niro used cat treats to bond with the animal actor on set.The Pipe & Prejudice: We discuss the moment Jack blames the drug pipe on Greg, showcasing his instant prejudice and disregard for the truth.Casting What-Ifs: We reveal that the role of Greg Focker almost went to Jim Carrey and the role of Jack Byrnes almost went to Christopher Walken.Film History: The 2000 blockbuster is actually a remake of a "wonderfully twisted black comedy" independent film from 1991 that most people have never seen.As always, don’t miss out on the Retro Ramble, Stale Popcorn and Gum Under The SeatIf you're a millennial who grew up quoting this movie, or just love a good nostalgic conversation, then this is the podcast for you!Join us as we take a LIVE trip down memory lane, every Thursday on YouTube!Got questions or comments?Email us: [email protected] Or Comment Below!Check out the polished and refined podcast episodes wherever you get your podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/2N5V4jBFzMxq0xgzGupLAW?si=FzrMm9AARjycAEUlDQ9isQ Want some sweet podcast swag?https://pecantreedesign.etsy.com/listing/1850510998/this-podcast-takes-tokens Want to support us and get just a little more, like access to all the past Live episodes?Check out our Patreon: patreon.com/ThisPodcastTakesTokensTimecodes00:00 Intro / Retro Ramble: Dad Tropes11:30 Box Office, Budget, & Rotten Tomatoes Scores19:22 Why the Audience Still Loves Meeting the Parents22:27 The History & Necessity of the "Focker" Last Name24:30 The Awkwardness of Asking for a Hand in Marriage31:13 The Awkward Silence as a Comedic Tool33:55 Jack's Flawed CIA/Florist Cover36:04 The Prejudice & The Pipe Incident41:51 Kevin (Owen Wilson), Pam, and the Ex-Boyfriend Situation44:56 The Famous "Can you milk me?" line54:36 Casting Alternatives (Jim Carrey & Christopher Walken)01:02: 45 Stale Popcorn01:13:52 Next Week's Retro Ramble#ThisPodcasTakesTokens #RetroRamble #StalePopcorn #GumUnderTheSeat #Podcast #Nostalgia #MeetTheParents #BenStiller #RobertDeNiro #Focker #RomCom #ComedyMovie #Y2K #MillennialClassic #CinemaHistory

The Legend Of PODCAST TOKENS: Sleepy Hollow (1999) TPTT EP089
This week, we are riding with the headless horsemen into this spooky season to discuss the 1999 Tim Burton gothic classic, Sleepy Hollow, starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci! Was this film a successful artistic vision or a beautiful, hollow shell? We slice right into the details, the behind-the-scenes secrets, and whether a murder mystery and a monster movie can successfully coexist.Highlights and Talking Points in this Episode:The Tim Burton Aesthetic: We debate the visual style, which won an Oscar for Art Direction , and whether the heavily stylized, fog-drenched set felt cinematic or too much like a theatrical stage play.Box Office Success: Despite a late November release date , the film was a massive success, earning $207 million worldwide on a reported $70 million budget. The Rotten Tomatoes Debate: The film critics (71%) and audience (80%) scores were surprising, proving the film was a major success.Ichabod's Backstory: We discuss whether Johnny Depp's squeamish, trauma-ridden detective, a huge departure from the original story's schoolteacher , needed such a deep backstory. (Spoiler: We thought it was a little much!)A Murder Mystery or a Monster Movie? Does the film fail by trying to be both, immediately showing a real ghost but then treating the story like a whodunit?Casting Corner: Tim Burton's first choice was always Johnny Depp , but we look at other considered actors like Brad Pitt and Liam Neeson. The Star Wars Connection: There are three "Sith Lords" in this movie! We break down the surprising connection between the cast and the Star Wars universe. Can you name all three? The Real Hero: We give a shout-out to the unsung hero of the movie: the horse, Gunpowder, who was saved from being euthanized by Johnny Depp, or was Depp conned into owning a horse? As always, don’t miss out on the Retro Ramble, Stale Popcorn and Gum Under The SeatIf you're a millennial who grew up quoting this movie, or just love a good nostalgic conversation, then this is the podcast for you!Join us as we take a LIVE trip down memory lane, every Thursday on YouTube!Got questions or comments?Email us: [email protected] Or Comment Below!Check out the polished and refined podcast episodes wherever you get your podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/2N5V4jBFzMxq0xgzGupLAW?si=FzrMm9AARjycAEUlDQ9isQ Want some sweet podcast swag?https://pecantreedesign.etsy.com/listing/1850510998/this-podcast-takes-tokens Want to support us and get just a little more, like access to all the past Live episodes?Check out our Patreon: patreon.com/ThisPodcastTakesTokens #ThisPodcasTakesTokens #RetroRamble #StalePopcorn #GumUnderTheSeat #Podcast #Nostalgia #MovieReview #SleepyHollow #TimBurton #JohnnyDepp #HeadlessHorseman #GothicHorror #ChristinaRicci

Waiting... Episode 77
Poof! As if by some sort of token magic, we're here! 😉 This week we are clocking in to discuss the 2005 workplace comedy, Waiting…! We explore how this film captures the "slice of life" experience of young adults figuring out their lives while toiling away in entry-level service jobs.We dive into the movie's surprisingly low $3 million budget and its solid box office return, proving that a relatable story and a great ensemble cast (Ryan Reynolds, Justin Long, Anna Faris, and Dane Cook!) were a recipe for success. We also discuss why critics gave it a low 28% score, while the audience pushed it up to 75%—is it because the comedy hasn't aged well?We revisit the humor of the mid-2000s, reflecting on jokes that hit differently today and moments that still make us laugh. We discuss why Ryan Reynolds's character, Monty, despite his flaws, would still be a fun person to hang out with, and why Anna Faris's character, Serena, is the smartest one in the room. Plus, we celebrate the epic monologue from Mitch when he finally lets loose on his coworkers! As always, don’t miss out on the Retro Ramble, Stale Popcorn and Gum Under The SeatIf you're a millennial who grew up quoting this movie, or just love a good nostalgic conversation, then this is the podcast for you!Join us as we take a LIVE trip down memory lane, every Thursday on YouTube!Got questions or comments?Email us: [email protected] Or Comment Below!Check out the polished and refined podcast episodes wherever you get your podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/2N5V4jBFzMxq0xgzGupLAW?si=FzrMm9AARjycAEUlDQ9isQ Want some sweet podcast swag?https://pecantreedesign.etsy.com/listing/1850510998/this-podcast-takes-tokens Want to support us and get just a little more, like access to all the past Live episodes?Check out our Patreon: patreon.com/ThisPodcastTakesTokens #BestBudsSummerRewind #ThisPodcasTakesTokens #RetroRamble #StalePopcorn #GumUnderTheSeat #Podcast #Nostalgia #WaitingMovie #RyanReynolds #JustinLong #AnnaFaris #DaneCook #Comedy #2000sMovies #ServiceIndustry #OzzyOsbourne #OzzyForever

The Office: Hello from the electric city of Scranton! (Episode 076)
Hello from the electric city of Scranton! 😉 This week, we are punching in to discuss The Office Season 1! After wrapping up our Best Buds Summer Rewind, we're diving into the show that took the world by storm – focusing on its humble, and sometimes awkward, beginnings. We reminisce about first discovering the show (for Ryan, the "Healthcare" episode was his gateway!), and explore how Season 1, while a little "rough"(That’s what she said!), laid the groundwork for the beloved series. We dig into why Michael Scott seemed "insufferable" initially, and how a key change from executive producer Ricky Gervais (making Michael good at sales and more childlike) pivoted the character into the lovable boss we know. We even touch on Steve Carell's commitment to not watching the UK version to avoid influence!Get ready for some laughs as we revisit:The cringe-worthy "Diversity Day" episode, the most skipped episode in syndication due to its racial insensitivity (but a vital part of the show's early identity!).Our favorite moments from Season 1, including Dwight's “medical diagnosis”, Michael's ridiculous "blue blast" sports drink, and that shocking "Filet-O-Fish" confession. The evolution of Dwight, Angela, and Creed's characters from their early iterations.Jim and Pam's early flirtations, and the surprisingly terrible way Roy proposed to Pam!The "Alliance" prank, Dwight stuck in a box, and Jim getting Dwight to dye his hair blonde. As always, don’t miss out on the Retro Ramble, Stale Popcorn and Gum Under The SeatIf you're a millennial who grew up quoting this movie, or just love a good nostalgic conversation, then this is the podcast for you!Join us as we take a LIVE trip down memory lane, every Thursday on YouTube!Got questions or comments?Email us: [email protected] Or Comment Below!Check out the polished and refined podcast episodes wherever you get your podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/2N5V4jBFzMxq0xgzGupLAW?si=FzrMm9AARjycAEUlDQ9isQ Want some sweet podcast swag?https://pecantreedesign.etsy.com/listing/1850510998/this-podcast-takes-tokens Want to support us and get just a little more, like access to all the past Live episodes?Check out our Patreon: patreon.com/ThisPodcastTakesTokens #BestBudsSummerRewind #ThisPodcasTakesTokens #RetroRamble #StalePopcorn #GumUnderTheSeat #Podcast #Nostalgia #TheOffice #TheOfficeUS #MichaelScott #JimHalpert #PamBeesly #DwightSchrute #DunderMifflin
