Make a decision and move forward tweaking it as you move forward. Everyone should have a hierarchy of documents which create the basis of a successful system. Whatever your business you need policies – beginning with your ethics and quality policy. There must be a business manual – an overview of how the business works and individual responsibilities. Each process requires documentation and its vital to also have a policy that is an overview of the policies. Standard operating procedures are the documentation that explain how to do something and mean that a process can be undertaken by anyone within the business. It’s the ‘how-to’ document. Records are the documents you need to keep – there are statutory time periods that some documents must be kept as part of your records. You can lose money if you don’t put in systems that can be standardised.
