They follow an eight-legged “spider rat” into the crypt of Elora Thorn, avoid a hoard mimic treasure room, and trigger a sarcophagus/portal that separates Van into a strange house. Inside, they find a guest book of notable townspeople, Van has extra brands and no reflection, and a Modron servant says its mistress Velma Thorn left centuries ago; it identifies several names tied to the town. After manipulating a magically stuck grandfather clock to midnight and reaching an attic lab under time-stop, Velma’s diary reveals she tried to undo Elora’s death via a deal.
