Tayla Myree: Queering Black Representation in European Art

Tayla Myree gave a lecture at Queer Museum Wien May 7,2026 Johann Gottfried Auerbach’s ‘Portrait of Prince Eugene’ is said to have cost 95,000 euros.[1] The painting now hangs in the Lower Belvedere in Vienna. Tayla Myree [2] uses this as an example for her talk in the series “What’s Missing?”. The Queer Museum Vienna [3] is presenting a series of lectures on queer art history under this title. What we are missing—both in the title of the aforementioned painting and structurally within European art history—are the names and the stories of the Black people depicted in this and many similar portraits. Tayla Myree discusses several examples of the representation of Black people in European art, examining the racist, stereotypical, and colonial symbols they contain. She also explores how racist beauty ideologies and violence against Black cis women are connected to the depiction of enslaved people in European art. We present a recording of the lecture with brief announcements and some music. Tayla Myree spricht über einige Beispiele der Repräsentation von Schwarzen Menschen in der europäischen Kunst. Welche rassistischen, stereotypen und kollonialen Symbole sie enthalten. Aber auch darüber was rassistische Schönheitsideologien oder Gewalt gegen Schwarze cis Frauen mit der Darstellung versklavter Menschen in der europäischen Kunst zu tun hat.
