Cada día, una constelación de satélites orbita la Tierra observando lo que sucede en la superficie. En el Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía, Gabriel Navarro y su equipo estudian las imágenes ópticas y de radar, facilitadas por los satélites del programa Copernicus de la ESA, para investigar distintos fenómenos: ondas internas que se adentran en el Mediterráneo por el estrecho de Gibraltar forzadas por el intercambio de agua con el océano Atlántico; cambios de color en las aguas marina que revelan la presencia y abundancia de seres vivos que utilizan la clorofila para elaborar sus nutrientes; variaciones de temperatura y altura del nivel de los océanos; detección de vertidos contaminantes en el mar y cambios en la turbidez de las aguas.
