But this episode follows a quieter thread: the decades she spent standing with queer people when it cost something. Her 1991 song "Family" put the word "gay" warmly into a country song. Her Oscar-nominated "Travelin' Thru," written for the 2005 film Transamerica, told a trans woman's story on the Academy Awards stage. In 2009 she publicly backed marriage equality, years before Obergefell, joking that gay couples should be allowed to "suffer just like us heterosexuals." In 2011 she personally apologized after a Dollywood Splash Country employee made a visitor cover a marriage-equality T-shirt, declaring the park "a place for all families, period." She spoke out against North Carolina's anti-trans bathroom law, gave to the fight against HIV/AIDS, and famously lost a Dolly Parton lookalike contest to a drag queen at a West Hollywood gay bar. When asked how her Christian faith squared with all of it, her answer never changed: "If people want to pass judgment, they're already sinning... That's God's job."
