The B-Movie Podcast: Badass Women Westerns – The Quick and the Dead (1995)

The first of two on-going series this month is all about Women in Film.  It could be genres, actresses, filmmakers, whatever we please but it will be about one thing… Badass Women.  Badass doesn’t have to tote a gun, they could just be tough as nails to take on An All-Boys Club like directing or Genre films.  In fact, every Woman is a badass in their own right… The second film in this double feature is Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead starring the indomitable Sharon Stone.  The early-to-mid-1990’s were owned by Stone who made an indelible impression as the covert Mars Agent in Paul Verhoeven’s whacky Total Recall.  The Quick and the Dead represents her finest Genre Moment.  As “The Lady” Stone owns the screen the same way that Charles Bronson did in Once Upon a Time in the West (which this is a very loose remake of). Raimi’s direction is designed to not sexualize Stone but make her the baddest of badasses in a film filled with badasses.  You doubt?  Well, Stone is the biggest badass in a film with a cast that includes Academy Award Winners Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Russell Crowe and Genre Greats Woody Strode, Keith David, Lance Hendricksen, Pat Hinge, Mark Boone Junior, Tobin Bell, and Gary Sinise!!!  With all these men in the film, Stone is still and always front and center.  Not because she’s the center of the story but because she’s a magnetic star at the height of her powers.
