It's the movie that depicted a conflict that literally brought down the Fourth French Republic. French critics hated it and it took five years for France to release Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers to release theatrically. Internationally, it was incredibly well regarded. American audiences that were against the Vietnam War gravitated towards it. Due to its grounded depiction of urban resilience and guerilla warfare groups such as the PLO and the Black Panthers had screenings of this film. Even the Pentagon had screenings of this film.This highly controversial film is regarded currently as a fair and balanced depiction of a sociopolitical quagmire in post-war France and Northern Africa.
