Jackass: The Movie (2002) and Jackass Franchise Discussion w/ Dalton Pike of Outside the Frame and Sick Flicks

Welcome to Jackass! To celebrate Jackass: Best and Last the supposedly final installment of the slapstick comedy franchise, Dalton is back on the show to chat about a series that both mean a lot to the both of us.Jackass was considered low brow initially. However, the films reviewed better overtime as critics came to realize that the comradery and friendship of the cast are what make it special... on top of the gross out gags and hits the nuts. You can find Dalton on Letterboxd. Point Break (1991) w/ Daberhasher

Happy Pride Month!Surfers, bank heists and homoeroticism are at the centre of Kathryn Bigelow's film about masculinity. This Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves is a true cult classic. I'm joined by Daberhasher to explore this wild movie with an absolutely hilarious discussion.Point Break is directed by Kathryn Bigelow, produced by James Cameron, written by W. Peter Iliff and maybe James Cameron. It stars Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros, Anthony Kiedis, Lee Tergeson and Tom Sizemore. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and Warriors of the Wind (1985) w/ Amity Gilmour

Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind premiered in Japan to good reviews. A year later, an awful cut of the film emerged in North America called Warriors of the Wind which misread the tone of the movie and featured a bad English dub. That bad dub changed anime in the west because Miyazaki's hatred of it had him and his people threaten Harvey Weinstein with a prop katana when he wanted to cut Princess Mononoke over a decade later. Miyazaki's films now have quality English dubs, which exposed audiences to anime and eventually Nausicaä received a proper uncut Western release in 2005.To discuss the uncut version of the film as well as the bad Warriors of the Wind edit I am joined by my co-writer at GG Tribune Amity Gilmour! You can follow Amity on BlueskyMoviePod Socials:InstagramTwitterBlueskyYouTubeSupport the show! Ko-FiPlease rate, review and subscribe! Spies Like Us (1985) w/ Charles Star from No Homework Podcast

No children were killed in helicopter accidents during this particular John Landis production. This week on the show I'm joined by Charles Star to discuss the spy comedy Spies Like Us! It was received pretty weakly but on its 40th anniversary many articles popped up praising the Cold War setting of the kind of movie that does not get made much anymore.I was shocked there was a Paul McCartney song attached to this film.Spies Like Us was directed by child murderer John Landis. It stars Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Donna Dixon, Bruce Davison, William Prince, Tom Hatten, Bernie Casey, and Steve Forrest. Featuring cameos by Costa-Gavras, Ray Harryhausen, Joen Coen, Sam Raimi, Martin Brest, Bob Hope, B.B. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) w/ Matt Fresh from GG Tribune and Stand N' Watch

They finally made a new James Bond video game! In celebration of the release of 007 First Light, I'm using it as a chance to discuss my favourite film franchise again. I am joined by my GG Tribune editor Matt Fresh to discuss a film that was ahead of its time in depicting the role media uses technology to manipulate the public and manufacture consent to justify military action. It also has Pierce Brosnan eject a terrorist from the back of his jet into another terrorists plane and Michelle Yeoh kicking dudes in the face. Tomorrow Never Dies is directed by Roger Spottiswoode. It stars Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michele Yeoh, Teri Hatcher, Joe Don Baker, Desmond Llewelyn, Ricky Jay and Judi Dench. You can follow Matt on Bluesky. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) w/ Ryan

For episode 50 of MoviePod we are doing Episode 1!I am joined again by Ryan to discuss a film that had impossible expectations upon release and received criticism for its bizarre choices and stilted dialogue. However, as time as gone on and the brand of Star Wars has become corporate, the pure auteur vision of George Lucas has been comended.Ryan and I go in-depth talking about the various Glup Shitto's and problematic elements that make up this wild film that we are both fond of as well as ones such as Jar Jar Binks that we are mixed on. You will hear my pro-Watto stance and my thoughts on space racism.Thank you all listening to MoviePod! Top Gun (1986) w/ Dalton Pike from Sick Flicks and Outside the Frame

This week on MoviePod we are writing cheques our bodies can't cash. We are talking about Top Gun just in time for the 40th anniversary. Critics were iffy on the dialogue and human elements of this film but all agreed that the action scenes were awesome. Now, people have come around on Tony Scott as a filmmaker and the existence of the incredible Top Gun: Maverick has. I'm joined again by Dalton Pike to rip a Tony and discuss his favourite director. Mortal Kombat (1995) w/ Tim Sestito and Tommy Thevenet from Haven't Scene It

In time for the new film, I am joined by Tim and Tommy from the Haven't Scene It podcast to discuss Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 film Mortal Kombat! It was the first video game movie that ever made actual money. However, the lack of the series signature gore and violence as well as the cheap acting had people criticize this film upon release. Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966) w/ MLYP

It was a forgotten film made by a fertilizer salesman on a bet in 1966. It fell into complete obscurity until it was discovered and riffed on in a classic episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Now the film has a reputation as being the worst film ever made which of course gives it a unique kind of second life thanks to fans of bad cinema. It has a cult following which has led to a Kickstarter sequel and a prequel film.To discuss this atrocious film I am joined again by MLYP. We talk about how Something Awful users have restored this film and we go through the little plot of the film exhaustively. The Wachowski's adaptation of the Speed Racer anime was met with divisive reviews. Many people, including myself, at the time found it headache inducing and too over the top. Constantine (2005) w/ Johnny Amizich from Culture Dumpster and GG Tribune

This week we are covering a comic book movie that divided critics upon its release. However, the unique visual style makes it stand apart from so many other homogenized super hero movies. The lead star, Keanu Reeves, has also been reclaimed as a performer leading to works such as Francis Lawrence's Constantine from being reevaluated in retrospective viewings.I'm joined for the fifth time by Johnny Amizich! But is the film that inspired The Golden Raspberry's really the worst film ever?I'm joined again by Ethan to discuss a film that has had a cult following to the point where it has inspired a Tony nominated play.Xanadu is directed by Robert Greenwald. Labyrinth (1986) w/ Andrew Joe Potter

For its 40th anniversary, I am joined again by Andrew Joe Potter to discuss one of his favourite films: the Jim Henson puppet fantasy film staring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. The film got mixed reviews when it came out and was not a box office hit. Home video releases and a generation that grew up on the film helped propel this fantasy journey into becoming a cult classic.MoviePod Socials:InstagramTwitterBlueskyYouTubeSupport the show! Ko-FiPlease rate, review and subscribe! Super Mario Bros. (1993) w/ Ben

With the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie on the way we are going back in time to the first live-action video game movie ever made: Super Mario Bros. with Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis and Dennis Hopper. The creative freedoms taken by the married director pair deviate wildly from the game and for decades people considered this to be one of the worst movies ever made. However, the liberties and production design are so excessive that it has a cult following and a very expensive boxset that die-hard fans can enjoyed. Sucker Punch (2011) w/ Maeve

For its 15th anniversary, I brought Maeve back onto the show to talk about the most Zack Snyder film that Zack Snyder has ever made. Sucker Punch was critically panned when it came out but it has its shooters who appreciate Snyder's audacity and creative vision. People like myself find it sexist and dull, but people like Maeve are correct in believing the extended cut is better. She is a defender of the austereness of Snyder.Tune in for a discussion on Zack Snyder as a filmmaker. American Sniper (2014) w/ Jacob from Workers' Lit Podcast

It's the movie with the fake baby.Clint Eastwood's depiction of the late Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in American history, was a smash hit. Immediately upon release articles came out pushing back on various claims of his life story. Mainly on how he made up events where he killed even more people outside of war.I am joined by Jacob from the Workers' Lit Podcast to discuss this simplified story of an uncomplicated figure as well as the genre of war film that is patriotic, problematic and propagandic. The reception of the film is roughly the same but the events depicted are drastically more unpopular than ever.On top of discussing American imperialism and Middle East Forever Wars listen for our pitch for a sequel series American Wife. Sorcerer (1977) w/ Audens

It was released against the original Star Wars and it's failure signaled a changed in tastes for an era. Critics hated it because it was a remake. Audiences did not show up to a movie called Sorcerer that's not about magic but about trucks full of unstable dynamite.William Friedkin's follow up to The Exorcist was highly anticipated, overbudget, had undercover Mexican federales almost arrest the crew. had a terrorist bombing a street over from the set.I am joined by Audens to discuss one of the best initially overlooked movies of the 70s. Digimon: The Movie (2000) w/ Mike

Happy new year, digifriends! On this very special episode of MoviePod, we go back to an anime film that was ridiculed for being incomprehensible. It is! It's three stitched together short films with a bonus Angela Anaconda opening (that may have caused someone's divorce) with a glorious ska soundtrack on top.Digimon: The Movie's unique status as an anime film that is very Americanized from a wild west era of dubbing and adapting works to western audiences make it a real anomaly of a movie. I'm joined by my friend Mike who is a digiexpert of the digital monsters to help me make digisense of what the digihell is going on.(Reuploaded after some audio issues in the original file)Please rate review and subscribe! It's A Wonderful Life (1946) w/ Johnny Amizich from Culture Dumpster

It started off as a box-office disappointment that was investigated by the FBI for communist sympathies. It wasn't until it became part of the public domain in the 1970s that people started watching It's A Wonderful Life as a Christmas staple. It has since been reclaimed as one of the greatest films of all time.I am joined again by Johnny Amizich to discuss one of my favourite movies for to wrap up 2026 on MoviePod.You can follow Johnny on Bluesky.Johnny also hosts Culture Dumpster. Please rate review and subscribe! Some initial reviews thought "bah humbug! this isn't as good as other Christmas Carol telling's"Time has vindicated fans of this and the Muppets for being both one of the best Muppet movies, the best Charles Dickens film and a true holiday staple. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017) w/ Dalton Pike from Sick Flicks

I am kicking myself for the fact Laura Dern is not mentioned once in this episode. This was supposed to be a Die Hard 2 episode with Dalton and Mike from Sick Flicks! Unfortunately, I forgot to hit the record button so that episode is lost but will forever be part of MoviePod lore.Dalton came up with a great save though. We did an impromptu loose episode on a film that got rave reviews on release and made a ton of money. However, detractors within a couple of days declared it to be the film that ruined Star Wars. Did Rian Johnson ruin the Star Wars legacy? Or did the backlash against this film ruin Star Wars? Either way, The Last Jedi has been claimed as either the nadir or a high point of the Star Wars saga. We absolutely loooooove this film and both believe it is a top 3 Star Wars film. Dalton and I try to figure out what people dislike about the films while balancing our incredibly deep love for the movie. It's the film that ended the Cold War. It's an over-the-top departure from the previous three installments in this Oscar-winning series. It was well-received but time has been very favourable to the film. Repeat viewings on cable as well as cult fandoms developing around Nicholas Cage, John Woo and the film itself has helped elevate the film to being considered one of the best action films of the 1990s.I am joined by June and Caleb from the Kill The Computer podcast. Alien 3 (1992) w/ Ben

This week on MoviePod we are discussing a film that I find so interesting that it inspired me to change to this format. I am joined by my great friend Ben to discuss Alien 3, also known as Alien³, or Alien Cubed. David Fincher directed this bleak and depressing film but disowned it after the studio interfered. An extended cut, known as the Assembly Cut, released in the early 2000s restored much of Fincher's vision.Alien 3 has a really troubled and fascinating history and it was a blast to dive in deep to see why people absolutely despise this film for killing off fan favourites while undestanding why people appreciate that bold choice.Heads up: there are some Game of Thrones season 3 spoilers in this episode.
