The Bible in Hebrew: What Gets Lost in Translation? With Dror Ben Ami

What if some of the biblical stories we think we understand have meanings that are very different from what we have been taught?Today, I am joined by Dror Ben Ami, author of The Vineyard and The Final Jubilee, whose work explores metaphors, symbolism, and the language of the Old and New Testaments.Dror studied Comparative Literature in both the United States and Israel and was strongly influenced by the work of scholar and mystic Maurice Nicoll. His approach to biblical interpretation challenges a number of traditional understandings within both Jewish and Christian communities, with a particular focus on the importance of Hebrew and the role of metaphor in understanding ancient texts.In this conversation, we explore why Dror believes the Hebrew language is essential to understanding the Bible, how the New Testament can provide another lens through which to examine the language of the Old Testament, and what can happen when familiar stories are examined through their original linguistic and cultural context.We also discuss some of his unconventional interpretations, including his view of Jesus as a plowman and sower rather than a carpenter, and his understanding of the story of Moses and the rock.
