Here’s a simple math problem: If the average person earns $100,000 a year, and a billionaire has a billion dollars, that billionaire supposedly worked 10,000 times harder.The math is absurd. You already know that.But here’s the question I had to ask myself: If the system’s math doesn’t work, what does that mean about the identity I built inside it?For 10 years, I was a professor at UNC Chapel Hill — with a lab of 16 people, major grant funding, and part of the Human Genome Project. I built an identity around authority, rigor, control, and “working harder than everyone else.”That identity felt like safety. It was actually misalignment.And I’m not the only one.
