The Church at Pergamos Rev 3:1-6

The church at Pergamos (Pergamum) was a church in the middle of a spiritual conflict or war, just at the name, Pergamos, has the root meaning of watchtower or fortified structure. This city was famous as a major cultural, intellectual, and religious (pagan) center of the Roman world. Known for the second largest library of the empire, the "seat" of Satan, and the temple for worshiping Asclepios, the Greek god of medicine, healing, and rejuvenation, and symbolized by a serpent-entwined staff. For the believers in the church, they were surrounded by spiritual enemies and at the same time enemies within the membership.
