The Crown and the Basin: Saul’s Ascent and Jesus’ Humility (Day 142)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What does a true leader look like? Today in 1 Samuel, Saul is publicly chosen by lot as king, wins his first major military victory against the Ammonites, and has his kingship confirmed at Gilgal. Yet, as Samuel delivers his farewell address, he warns the nation that having a human king will not save them if they rebel against God. In the Gospel of John, we see a completely different picture of power. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus stands up from the dinner table, wraps a towel around His waist, and drops to His knees to wash the dirt from His disciples' feet—showing that in His Kingdom, the greatest of all must become the servant of all.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 10:9–12:25 – God changes Saul’s heart, and he begins to prophesy. When chosen by lot before the nation, Saul is found hiding among the baggage. He soon proves himself in battle by rescuing Jabesh-gilead. At Gilgal, the kingdom is renewed, and Samuel delivers a sobering farewell speech, calling down a supernatural harvest-time thunderstorm to remind Israel of their sin in demanding a king.📖 John 12:37–13:17 – John reflects on the people's stubborn unbelief, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecies. The narrative then shifts to the Upper Room. Knowing that His hour has come, Jesus washes His disciples’ feet, overcoming Peter's protests and telling them: "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet."📖 Psalm 66:1–12 – A joyous corporate song of praise inviting the whole earth to shout for joy to God. The psalmist recalls the parting of the Red Sea and acknowledges that though God has tested and refined His people like silver through fire and water, He ultimately brings them out to a place of abundance.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/ 🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
