The collapse of the Danish cooperation policy in August 1943 led to a direct German military takeover, the deposition of the Danish government, and the systematic disarmament and internment of Denmark's regular army.Under Operation Möwe on 19 September 1944, German security forces arrested nearly 2,000 Danish police officers, deporting them under brutal winter conditions to Nazi concentration camps including Neuengamme and Buchenwald.Exiled refugees formed the Danish Brigade in Sweden (Danforce) to assist in the country's May 1945 liberation, subsequently returning to help reconstruct the Danish army and establish the voluntary Home Guard.
