The Doom Castle

from Zero|DPX · host Zero|DPX

Based on music from Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I had never played this game, but a friend played me the music from this level and I was instantly entranced. I grabbed a MIDI transcription (I can transcribe things myself, but I was in a hurry) and quickly copied thirty or so seconds' worth into Scream Tracker 3. Then I decided to throw out the bits of the original song I hadn't yet put in (I didn't like them as much) and head off in my own direction on the arrangement. This is why the middle section of the song, which sequentially stacks instrument after instrument on top of each other, all playing complex moving parts, is not at all like the original piece, and pretty much exactly like most of the other songs I'd composed to that point in my life. This song also has my worst drum solo of all time in it, mostly because I had utterly no idea how to do a drum solo or in fact how to play drums at all. Originally I didn't even have any tom samples, just a kick and snare, and the solo was even worse; later on I came back to the song and reworked the solo so it was just "bad" and not "abysmal". (I also moved it from Scream Tracker 3 to Impulse Tracker at this point, which let me clean up the sound a bit.) Technically, this song is quite crude, but for some reason I still enjoy listening to it.
