"The Education of the Whole Man" Part #1

from The Long Road · host Ron Jones

In 1931, Oxford philosophy professor L.P. Jacks wrote a very important book entitled, "The Education of the Whole Man." This book changed my life and is one of my top three book recommendations. Jacks was classically educated so knew the importance of "a sound mind in a sound body" and brilliantly wrote about bringing the physical training (classical physical education) of the body together with intellectual learning in classrooms. There are major concepts in this book that will pivot any rational person. In this first segment, I highlight the importance of educating the "whole person" and Jacks' concept of A1 minds with C3 bodies and how both are doomed to failure because we need to be educating youth for A1 minds AND A1 bodies too...if we want the best life-long learners and citizens. Classical leisure is also addressed in this show which is essential to national health and longevity.
