The End of the Age of American Capital?

from Blain's Morning Porridge · host Bill Blain

Blain’s Morning Porridge 15th January 2026: The End of the Age of American Capital?“People don’t like change, but make the change fast enough and you go from one type of normal to another.”Markets are deluged in noise as the President remakes the world. We’re learning to roll with it – but the trick will be to spot the opportunities and gaps that will open. President Trump’s recent demands that US banks and lenders follow his orders is one such opportunity – and crash a critical component of the US economy’s success. There are rumours the American’s used sonic-weapons inVenezuela to leave Maduro’s guards incapacitated. It feels that way in markets these days… Who doesn’t love the excitement and upside potential triggered by technological progress, constructive politics or positive data? Such times create market opportunities and volatility to trade. Periods of bad news create exactly the same conditions – and can be even more exciting when markets appear to teeter on the edge of cataclysm. I freely  admit the crisis of 2008 was one of the most exciting times I ever had in the markets. Of course, what markets think they crave is dull, boringand predictable; calm conditions where participants can think, plan and invest for the long term. At the moment, it feels we’re either trading moment to moment between Truth Social Tweets on everything from credit card rates, to Greenland, Iran, or sacking the Fed Chair, amid swirling geopolitical tectonics, orsitting on piles of gold waiting for clarity. We’ve lost track of the deluge of Presidential announcementsand what they mean – they are relentless, hitting the markets in successive waves of angst across trading floors, board rooms and news desks. Many folk ignore them completely – figuring most of it will never happen. I worry about the ones that will.
