Wilcox, BYU professor, bestselling author of The Continuous Atonement, and former first counselor in the General Young Men's Presidency, joins the podcast for a conversation about the temple that has reached over 100,000 viewers. Beginning with the surprising story of St. Patrick — a prisoner who became a missionary, transforming the very people who enslaved him — Brad draws a direct line to the gathering of Israel: "It's not just about getting people back to God. It's about helping people become more like God." From there, he walks through the endowment with clarity and reverence: why we dress in white (purity, unity, equality), why the washing isn't just about personal sin but about "the sins of society," why the new name is given by date rather than as a personal revelation, why men and women sit separately (representing kingdoms where families cannot be together — only in the celestial kingdom do we reunite), what the royal robes teach about becoming kings and queens, what the handclasps actually symbolize ("it is literally a symbol of Christ holding us — tighter and tighter until he literally holds us in a clasp"), why we repeat the words of the prayer ("it's a unified, childlike way to pray... we do it in nursery"), and why no one passes through the veil alone: "The prophet himself can't part the veil and walk into the celestial realm. Everyone must go through holding the hand of the one representing God." He addresses the Masonic connection honestly — "Masons came from the Knights Templar... Is it a surprise they were exposed to temple symbols? No" — and distinguishes the two: Masonry is a fraternity for networking; the temple brings men and women together and connects them to God. On garments: "My wife wears a wedding ring because it's a symbol of our covenant. How do I feel if she takes it off every time she wants people to not think she's married?" And he shares why he keeps sacred things sacred: "If I can show God I am trustworthy, what else will He trust me with? What other revelations, what other visions of eternity can be mine?" And on His mercy, on His love, on His goodness, with His grace, we enter heaven." — Brad WilcoxQ: What is the temple endowment?A: Brad Wilcox teaches it is a gift — a gift of knowledge, perspective, and power, of ancient origin. It prepares us to enter God's presence, just as someone meeting a king would receive a protocol: what to wear, how to address the person, what to expect. "Are we surprised that God would want to share with His children the very things they need to know to feel comfortable entering His presence?"Q: What do garments symbolize?A: More than modesty — they are "taking the name of Christ upon us." Wilcox connects them to the "coat of skins" Adam and Eve wore out of the Garden of Eden and to the priestly clothing described in Exodus and Leviticus: a robe over a tunic, an ephod (apron with needlework), a girdle (sash), and a mitre (head covering) on which a crown would sit. "It's the only thing we wear from the temple outside the temple... I want that reminder of my covenant relationship every day."Q: Is the endowment just copied from the Masons?A: No — Wilcox explains that Masonry descends from the Knights Templar, who were exposed to temple symbols in the Holy Land. Shared symbols do not mean shared origins: "You have hair, your husband has hair — that doesn't mean you're identical twins." At their core, Masonry is a fraternity for networking; the temple brings men and women together, endows both with priesthood power, and connects them to God — purposes fundamentally different from a social club.Q: Why can't we talk about what happens in the temple?A: Because keeping that covenant demonstrates trustworthiness to God: "As I show God that I am trustworthy, what else will He trust me with? What other revelations, what other visions of eternity can be mine?"
