Are Temple Workers Cherubim? | The Angelic Role in LDS Temples

Send us Fan MailAre LDS (Latter-day Saint) temple workers cherubim? In this episode of Thinning of the Veil, host Tia Smith traces a pattern she had never noticed until just days before recording: the ancient cherubim of the Old Testament and the temple workers serving in the House of the Lord today share the same sacred calling. Cherubim were placed to guard the way to the tree of life; temple workers stand as sentinels at the veil, guarding sacred space and helping God's children return to His presence.Drawing on Genesis, Ezekiel, Alma 12, and Moses, along with teachings from Brigham Young, Bruce R. McConkie, and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's talk "The Ministry of Angels," Tia walks through the many roles cherubim fill in scripture — facilitating the plan of salvation, ensuring the correct sacrifice is offered, restoring priesthood keys, serving as messengers of the covenant, protecting sacred records, and strengthening — and shows how temple workers echo each one. She closes with a perspective shift: to those on the other side of the veil, every patron and temple worker is a mortal angel, ministering on both sides of the veil. If you have ever thought of temple service as merely "the work," this reframes it as literal angelic ministration — and an invitation to prayerfully consider serving as an LDS temple worker.Q: In LDS belief, what is the role of a temple worker?A: Latter-day Saint temple workers guard sacred space, reverently administer and witness ordinances, and help patrons make and keep the covenants that allow them to return to God's presence — the same duties scripture assigns to the cherubim who guarded the way to the tree of life. This episode traces that pattern through Genesis 2:15, Ezekiel, and Alma 12, with teachings from Brigham Young and Jeffrey R. Holland.Q: Are temple workers considered angels in LDS doctrine?A: This episode draws on Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's talk "The Ministry of Angels," in which he teaches that not all angels come from the other side of the veil — some we walk and talk with here every day. Tia applies this to temple workers, describing them as mortal cherubim who minister to patrons and to those awaiting their ordinances on the other side of the veil.Q: Why should Latter-day Saints consider serving as temple workers?A: Tia teaches that temple service is not simply "work" but a sacred, angelic responsibility — standing as a sentinel at the veil and helping God's children on both sides return to His presence. She invites listeners to prayerfully consider applying, sharing that many report thinning-of-the-veil experiences while serving.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? A Father's Visit After Death | President & Sister Nelson on Temple & Family History (LDS)

Send us Fan MailCan our deceased ancestors visit us from the spirit world? In this LDS (Latter-day Saint) family history message, President Russell M. Nelson and Sister Wendy Watson Nelson share a remarkable account of a father who returned after death to visit his living son — and teach why temple and family history work is so urgent.Recorded at RootsTech Family Discovery Day on February 11, 2017 (when President Nelson was serving as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles), this beloved address uses a game of Scrabble to walk through the spirit of Elijah, the sealing power, and the "sacrifice of time" that opens the windows of heaven.Inside this message:- The journal account of Andrew Clarence "A.C." Nelson — President Nelson's grandfather — whose deceased father appeared to him on the night of April 6, 1891, describing missionary work in the spirit world- Sister Nelson's story of her ancestor Sarah, "The Power of Sarah's Prayer," and how family history stories turn hearts across generations- Why preserving photos and stories is not enough without completing temple ordinances for our kindred dead- How family history opens natural doors for missionary work- President Nelson's challenge: make a sacrifice of time for temple and family history work this year — "and then watch what happens"Whether life feels full of joy or heartbreak right now, this teaching on LDS temple and family history work offers a path to more peace, more revelation, and a deeper connection to loved ones on both sides of the veil.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Should You Keep Spiritual Experiences Sacred or Share Them? | LDS Doctrine

Send us Fan MailShould we keep our spiritual experiences sacred, or share them? It's one of the most misunderstood questions among Latter-day Saints (LDS) — and in this episode, host Tia Smith works through it using scripture and prophetic teaching to show that the answer is both. After a tender, personal thinning-of-the-veil experience involving her children on the other side of the veil, Tia received a public comment insisting that such things should always be kept private. That comment sparked this study — because while keeping certain experiences sacred is absolutely part of the doctrine of Jesus Christ, so is sharing them when the Holy Ghost prompts us to.Tia uses the image of an umbrella: some experiences are meant to be guarded and kept private. But when we shove EVERY spiritual experience under that umbrella, the umbrella that shields us from rain also blocks out the light — leaving whole generations who no longer believe that dreams, visions, and the ministering of angels are a normal part of life in this dispensation. The scriptures and latter-day prophets show a consistent pattern: sacred experiences are often shared — when the Spirit directs — to build faith, bring joy, testify of Christ, and gather Israel. This episode looks at both halves of the principle: why some things must be guarded, and how to recognize when the Lord is asking you to testify — including the truth that sometimes we're to share only a portion of an experience and keep the rest sacred.Q: Is it wrong to share sacred spiritual experiences publicly?A: Not necessarily. Latter-day prophets teach that spiritual experiences should be treated with care and generally kept private — but also shared when the Holy Ghost prompts us to, for the blessing of others. Both keeping sacred and sharing are part of the same principle; the key is being guided by the Spirit.Q: How do I know when to share a spiritual experience and when to keep it private?A: Ask why you want to share it. If it's to be seen, praised, or to lift yourself above others, it likely should stay private. If the Holy Ghost prompts you to share it to build another's faith, bring them joy, or point them to Christ, that's the invitation to testify. It takes inspiration to know the difference.Q: Are dreams, visions, and ministering angels really part of the Church today?A: Yes. Prophets and apostles have taught that these experiences are not uncommon and are part of what the Lord has revealed in this dispensation. Latter-day teaching is that we live in an especially intense period of revelation, and that the greatest manifestations are still ahead as we prepare for the Savior's return.Q: Why does sharing spiritual experiences matter?A: When we testify as the Spirit directs, it helps others feel that God knows and loves them, assures them their own prayers can be answered, and helps them recognize spiritual experiences in their own lives. Silence can breed unbelief; Spirit-guided testimony builds faith.Q: What can I do with the spiritual experiences I've been given?A: A helpful pattern taught by Elder Neil L. Andersen: embrace them, believe them, write them down, and share them when prompted. With that, the promise is that more will come.👉 Full episode of David B. How Do Angels Communicate? | Ministering of Angels & the Holy Ghost (LDS)

Send us Fan MailHow do angels communicate with us — and why do we say it's through the Holy Ghost, even when we sense a specific ancestor? In this LDS (Latter-day Saint) episode, Tia Smith answers a listener's question by teaching that angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost (2 Nephi 32:3), so their messages reach us spirit-to-spirit through that same medium — whether we hear a name, feel peace, or see with the eyes of our understanding. She walks through Moroni 7:29–32 (angels have not ceased to minister), Elder Dallin H. Oaks on how the Aaronic Priesthood and the sacrament open the door to angelic ministration (October 1998 General Conference), the Guide to the Scriptures on the two kinds of angels, and Parley P. Pratt's testimony at the laying of the Salt Lake Temple cornerstone that Elijah's keys opened communication between worlds. Woven throughout are real listener testimonies of ancestors prompting temple and family history work from the other side of the veil.Q: How do angels communicate with us, according to LDS doctrine?A: Latter-day Saint doctrine teaches that angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost, so their words are the words of Christ delivered spirit-to-spirit through that medium (2 Nephi 32:3). This is why an experience can feel like a specific ancestor is present while still coming "through the Holy Ghost" — the Spirit is the channel by which angelic ministration reaches us.Q: If I sense a deceased loved one giving me a name or a prompting, is it really them or the Holy Ghost?A: In this episode Tia Smith explains it can be both: a real ancestor may be ministering, but the message is carried by the Holy Ghost, which is why we perceive it as feelings, words to the mind, or impressions rather than a face-to-face conversation. An Ensign article ("Angels We Have Heard," 2014) notes that what we perceive as the voice of the Spirit may itself be the result of angelic ministration.Q: Have angels stopped ministering to people today?A: No. Moroni teaches that angels have not ceased to minister and are subject to Christ, showing themselves to those of strong faith and a firm mind (Moroni 7:29–32). Tia adds that the main thing holding us back from recognizing them is unbelief, and that living our covenants opens the way for their ministry.Q: What do the temple and the sacrament have to do with the ministering of angels?A: Elder Dallin H. Oaks taught that through the Aaronic Priesthood ordinances of baptism and the sacrament we are cleansed and promised His Spirit — a promise that includes the ministering of angels, since angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost (October 1998 General Conference). Weekly, worthy partaking of the sacrament renews access to both the companionship of the Spirit and angelic ministration.Facebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Patterns of Revelation Hidden in the Book of Mormon | How to Hear the Spirit (LDS)

Send us Fan MailHow do you recognize the voice of the Spirit — and know a prompting is really from God? In this LDS (Latter-day Saint) episode of Thinning of the Veil, host Tia Smith sits down with author Christina Dymock — writer of Hidden Holy Days and a student of the Gathering of Israel for two decades — to trace the patterns of personal revelation woven all through the Book of Mormon.Together they walk through the "pattern of three" (Nephi commanded three times before he obeys in 1 Nephi 4; the people at the temple in 3 Nephi 11 hearing the voice three times before they understand it), the question "Believest thou?" that comes right before nearly every vision and covenant, and the Liahona as a type of the Book of Mormon itself — a revelation tool that works by faith, diligence, and heed. Christina also shares tender thinning-of-the-veil experiences from her family history work: a mother's plea of "I want my baby," twelve forgotten children found and sealed to their families after a January cemetery visit, and hearing her grandmother's voice the morning after she passed through the veil. Along the way they connect temple and family history work to preparing for the Second Coming, and how — as President Nelson taught — this work helps us learn to part the veil between heaven and earth.Q: What is the "pattern of three" in the Book of Mormon, and how does it apply to personal revelation?A: It's the repeated pattern where a prompting or the voice of the Lord comes three times before it is obeyed or understood — Nephi is told three times to act in 1 Nephi 4, and the people in 3 Nephi 11 hear the voice three times before they understand it. In the episode, Christina Dymock describes using this same pattern to know when a prompting is truly from the Spirit.Q: What are the "hidden holy days" in the Book of Mormon?A: Christina Dymock's book Hidden Holy Days shows how the ancient Hebrew feasts serve as the outline Nephi followed in 1 Nephi, with each story matching a feast's theme — for example, the Feast of Trumpets, when the shofar is blown to announce the King, aligns with Lehi seeing God enthroned and then calling the people to repentance.Q: How is the Liahona a symbol for personal revelation today?A: In 1 Nephi 16 the Liahona pointed the way, gave understanding, changed its writing "from time to time," and worked according to faith, diligence, and heed. Christina and Tia explain that the same is true of the Book of Mormon — it becomes a personal Liahona that guides you by the Spirit each time you sit down to read.Q: How do family history and temple work relate to the thinning of the veil and the Second Coming?A: The episode teaches that vicarious temple and family history work is a work of miracles that opens the heavens, connects both sides of the veil, and prepares families for the resurrection. As President Nelson has taught, this work helps us learn to part the veil between heaven and earth as we prepare for the Savior's return.📖 BOOK: "Hidden Holy Days",  Christina Dymock: https://plainandpreciouspublishing.com/products/hidden-holy-days?srsltid=AfmBOopsq6OKOQCiSfZOsg1vt2ZRHoFR-fu9T580ZvqUCtBZLiitmaak▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thinningoftheveil💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Two Veils | Brent L. Top on Pre-Mortality, the Spirit World & the Power of Temple Covenants (LDS)

Send us Fan MailWhat if understanding both sides of the veil — pre-mortal and post-mortal — is the key to making sense of mortality? Brent L. Top, retired BYU professor, author of more than 20 books, and sealer in the St. George Temple, returns to the podcast to teach two revolutionary doctrines of the Restoration: first, that we are literal offspring of heavenly parents with what he calls "celestial DNA" — spiritual capacities activated and refined by the Holy Ghost as we live the gospel; and second, that the work for the dead means every one of Heavenly Father's children will be given every opportunity to hear the fullness of the gospel and receive its ordinances, whether in this life or the next. "All are within the reach of pardoning mercy," Joseph Smith taught — a doctrine that, as Brother Top says, "is well calculated to enlarge the understanding and sustain the soul under troubles, difficulties, and distresses." Drawing on the three-act-play metaphor of Elder Quentin L. Cook, he teaches that walking into mortality without understanding pre-mortality and post-mortality is like arriving at the second act of a play with no knowledge of the first or third — and that the plan of salvation, when seen whole, answers the questions that otherwise make life seem arbitrary or cruel: why little children die, why people are born into vastly different circumstances, why faithful parents lose children to disbelief. As a sealer, he shares the deeply personal insight he calls "the as-if principle": in the sealing ordinance, through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all the as-ifs of mortality — all wrongs, all handicaps, all injustices — are made as if they had never been. He testifies that sealing power is not only for the next life: it infuses marriages and families with a reclaiming, healing, strengthening power right now. President Joseph F. Smith taught that when God sends a messenger to any person, it is a family member — and Brother Top's witness is that those on both sides of the veil are working for our salvation, that our rescue attempts go beyond this life, and that the story is never finished being told.Q: What are the "two veils" in LDS doctrine?A: There is a veil of forgetfulness separating us from our pre-mortal life, and a veil separating us from those who have died. Brent L. Top teaches that both are veils, not concrete walls — and that understanding what happens on each side is essential to making sense of mortality. Elder Quentin L. Cook compared the plan of salvation to a three-act play: without the first act (pre-mortality) and the third act (the spirit world and resurrection), the second act (mortality) seems arbitrary and purposeless.Q: What is the "as if" principle in the temple sealing?A: In the sealing of children to parents, a phrase declares that the ordinance operates "as if" certain conditions had been met. Brother Top, a sealer in the St. George Temple, teaches that it is the Savior who makes all the "as ifs" of mortality possible: through the Atonement, a sinner can be made as if they never sinned, a person born with disabilities can be made as if those had never existed. The sealing links families to the Atonement of Jesus Christ so that all wrongs, injustices, and conditions of mortality are ultimately resolved.Q: Does the power of a temple sealing help families in this life, or only in the next?A: Both — and Brother Top emphasizes the "here and now" dimension. He teaches that sealing power infuses marriages and families with a reclaiming, healing, strengthening power in mortality: "Why I keep my covenants is not just so that I can be with my beloved wife and family in the next life, but that I can have the marriage and family I need in this life." He compares it to the gift of the Holy Ghost — the ordinance confers a power that those without it "don't have quite the same way."Q: When God sends a messenger, is it always a family member?A: President Joseph F. Smith taught that when God sees fit to send a message or a messenger to any person, it is a family member. Brother Top connects this to both veils: we have ancestors who knew us in the pre-mortal world, who are watching over us now from the spirit world, and who are — in his words — "rooting for us" from both sides. He shares Oscar McConkie Sr.'s final words to his children: "I am going now into the spirit world, but I will not stop loving you. I will not stop praying for you. I will not stop working for your salvation."▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thinningoftheveil💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal:Support the show

Spiritual Manifestations in the Life of a Kiwi | Dreams, Visions & Temple Service — Kerstin Ngatuakana (LDS)

Send us Fan MailWhat if thinning of the veil experiences weren't unusual — but a normal part of how you grew up? Kerstin Ngatuakana  is a New Zealand Māori Latter-day Saint who didn't realize until adulthood that others didn't grow up hearing about ancestors' dreams and visions at the dinner table. In this interview, she shares a lifetime of spiritual manifestations — from seeing a girl beyond the veil at age four in the Cook Islands, to her father-in-law appearing in a dream to approve her marriage (saying "Look after my boy" — the exact phrase her husband confirmed he used), to her grandfather appearing to her in the celestial room of the Hamilton Temple and asking her to seal him to her grandmother. Kirsten testifies of the unique spiritual gifts of Polynesian people, whose cultural traditions of ancestral connection prepared them to embrace the gospel from the earliest missionaries: "When missionaries came, the Māori were already having visions and dreams. They were ready." Her temple service journey deepened when the Lord told her, "There is so much more I need to teach you" — leading her from family history research into daily service in the temple, where she witnesses miracles: a mother finally choosing to be sealed to the husband she once hated, for the sake of their son; families surprised with sealings they didn't know were possible; and the day she was asked to stand as proxy mother for nine men doing sealings — the very day her own heart was heavy over her sons' mission visas — and heard mothers on the other side of the veil, and saw them with their sons. She also shares a powerful revelatory name experience: after praying for weeks, the name "Annabelle" came in the night. Line upon line, the last name followed — Brown. On FamilySearch, she found Bessie Annabelle Brown, born in Los Angeles, related to her family, with no ordinance work done. At the completion of Bessie's endowment, Kirsten heard clearly: "Thank you, thank you, thank you.""I didn't realize others didn't have it until later. For us, this was normal. Dreams, visions — this was how we grew up." — Kirsten NgatuakanaQ: Do Polynesian Latter-day Saints have special spiritual gifts?A: Kirsten testifies that in Polynesian culture, dreams, visions, and ancestral connection are a normal part of life — not extraordinary. "I didn't realize others didn't have it until later." Her mother, a convert at 18, grew up hearing her own mother (not a member of the Church) speak of dreams and visions. When early missionaries came to New Zealand, many Māori people were already having visions that prepared them for the gospel — including seeing people who would "eat with you in your homes" and "raise their arms to the square."Q: Can I receive an ancestor's name through prayer and revelation?A: Yes — Kirsten prayed for weeks for a name after hearing about the practice on this podcast. In the night, the name "Annabelle" came to her, with a specific spelling. Weeks later, the last name "Brown" came clearly. She found Bessie Annabelle Brown on FamilySearch — a relative with no temple work done. At the completion of the endowment, Kirsten heard: "Thank you, thank you, thank you." She later connected with a researcher in Colorado working the same line, and testified to him about receiving the name in a dream — something he had never heard of.Q: Can deceased loved ones appear in dreams to confirm family decisions?A: Kirsten shares two experiences: her husband's deceased father appeared in his mother's dream to confirm their marriage — after her husband had specifically prayed for it. And her grandfather appeared to her in the celestial room of the Hamilton Temple and asked her to seal him to her grandmother — work Kirsten's mother had not yet arranged. Both prompted immediate action and brought peace.Q: How does temple service change your relationship with the Savior?A: Kirsten testifies that daily temple service has deepened her love for Christ by teaching her about Him through the people she serves. On a day her heart was heavy over her own sons, she was asked to stand as proxy mother for nine men doing sealings — and saw the mothers on the other side of the veil with their sons. "Who cares about some stupid visa? This is eternal, significant stuff." She adds: "A friend said to me, 'It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.' She goes, 'That's because you go to the temple every day.'"📚 SOURCES REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODEElder Richard G. "WHY HASN'T MY WORK BEEN DONE?" — Real Stories of Ancestors Reaching Through the Veil

Send us Fan MailCan our departed loved ones really reach through the veil? In this episode, I share two remarkable listener letters that testify our ancestors are closer than we think.Elaine Peterson tells the story of her daughter Charity, diagnosed with ALS at just 14 years old — and the sacred experiences that followed her passing, as Elaine's 3-year-old son Josh described seeing angels surrounding his sister, visits from grandma and grandpa, Charity "in her celestial splendor," and even the Savior in their own home. Elaine also shares a dream in which she was taught why temple work for our ancestors matters so urgently in these last days — so they can join the legions of angels who come with the Savior at His Second Coming. Then Brent Edwards shares how a name — Zebedee Clark — ran through his mind for months before he searched it on FamilySearch and discovered a cousin whose temple work had never been done. And the unforgettable moment he heard his grandfather's voice ask, "Why hasn't my work been done yet?"These testimonies witness that the veil grows thin when we engage in the gathering of Israel through family history and temple work.🌺 VOICES OF THE ANCESTORS — Cultural Legacy Exhibitions by the Pōhaku Foundation (Free Admission!)An awesome opportunity usually only available in the islands — now at 3 locations:▪️ Las Vegas, NV — Ahern Hotel, 300 W Sahara Ave — July 22, 1 pm–7 pm▪️ St. George, UT — Dixie Convention Center, 1835 S Convention Center Dr — July 25, 11 am–7 pm & July 26, 1 pm–7 pm▪️ West Valley City, UT — Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 West 3100 South — July 28, 11 am–6 pm & July 29, 9 am–4 pm🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com📧Email: [email protected]📖 Book: Patterns of Revelation (Amazon):https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BWGLZ8VX?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallback📱 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veil👥 Facebook Group: Gathering of the Gatherers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛Support the Show:Venmo:  https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USHave you had a thinning of the veil experience? Elijah on Mount Carmel | The Hidden Temple Pattern of Baptism for the Dead (LDS Gathering of Israel)

Send us Fan MailWhat does Elijah's showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel have to do with temple work and baptism for the dead? In this doctrinal Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith walks through 1 Kings 18 and shows how, thousands of years ago, Elijah laid out a pattern that echoes almost detail-for-detail in Latter-day Saint (LDS) temples today. As the prophet promised to return and restore the sealing power, Elijah's life was meant to foreshadow the gathering of Israel in the last days — and Tia traces that pattern through the sacred setting of Mount Carmel (kept green by constant dew), the altar rebuilt with 12 stones "according to the number of the tribes," the ox/bullock sacrifice, the water poured three times, and the fire that fell from heaven. She connects each piece to the baptismal font resting on 12 oxen, the symbolism of baptism by immersion and the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost, and Joseph Smith's rejoicing that "as the dews of Carmel, so shall the knowledge of God descend" (D&C 128:19). The result is a striking testimony that God is in the details — and that Elijah's ancient question, "How long halt ye between two opinions?", is the very invitation extended to us today. If you love deep temple doctrine and the symbolism of the gathering of Israel, this episode is for you.Q: How does the Old Testament story of Elijah on Mount Carmel relate to Latter-day Saint temple work?A: In this episode, host Tia Smith teaches that Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18) is a pattern foreshadowing latter-day temple and baptism-for-the-dead work — from the sacred setting and the altar rebuilt with 12 stones, to the sacrifice, the water, and the fire from heaven. As the prophet promised to restore the sealing power, Elijah's life echoes the gathering of Israel we participate in today.Q: What do the 12 oxen beneath a temple baptismal font represent?A: They represent the 12 tribes of Israel, facing outward toward the four quarters of the earth. Tia connects this to Elijah rebuilding the altar with 12 stones "according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob," teaching that the covenant seed of Abraham was foreordained to gather Israel and redeem their kindred dead.Q: What is the meaning of the "dews of Carmel" and the water and fire in Elijah's sacrifice?A: Tia teaches that Mount Carmel stayed green from constant dew, which Doctrine and Covenants 128:19 ties to the knowledge of God descending "as the dews of Carmel." She reads the water poured three times (four barrels times three equals twelve) and the fire that consumed the offering as symbols of baptism by immersion and the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost — the same pattern we experience in the temple.Q: What did Joseph Smith teach about the urgency of baptism for the dead?A: The episode shares Joseph Smith's teaching that Saints who neglect the work for their deceased relatives do so "at the peril of their own salvation," along with his counsel to gather and redeem the dead before the day of the Lord. Tia frames Elijah's question — "How long halt ye between two opinions?" — as the same choice set before every Latter-day Saint today.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Wilford Woodruff & the Signers of the Declaration | The St. George Temple Vision (LDS Temple Work)

Send us Fan MailDid the signers of the Declaration of Independence really appear to a prophet and ask for their temple work to be done? In this Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith tells the remarkable account of Wilford Woodruff in the St. George Temple in 1877 — where, he testified, the spirits of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and other eminent men and women came to him over two days and two nights and asked why their ordinances had not yet been performed. Tia sets the stage with Brigham Young's stirring plea at the temple's dedication (he died just months later), shares the history of the St. George Temple as the first place Latter-day Saints (LDS) could perform all temple ordinances for the dead, and highlights Lucy Bigelow Young — the temple's first matron, known for faith and a gift of healing — who was baptized for Martha Washington and dozens of eminent women. Drawing on the eyewitness testimony of temple recorder James G. Bleak, the episode presents this as a powerful witness that those beyond the veil accept the gospel in the spirit world and wait on us to complete their saving ordinances. Tia's message: this same work parts the veil for ordinary members today, and the day will come when our own ancestors either ask why we didn't act — or thank us for the work we did. If you love temple history and the doctrine of the gathering of Israel, this episode is for you.Q: Did the signers of the Declaration of Independence really appear to Wilford Woodruff?A: Wilford Woodruff testified that in the St. George Temple in 1877, the spirits of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, along with other eminent men and women, came to him over two days and two nights and asked why their temple work had not been done. He then arranged for their baptisms and endowments, describing them as among "the best spirits the God of heaven could find."Q: Why is the St. George Temple historically significant for Latter-day Saints?A: The St. George Temple was the first Latter-day Saint temple dedicated in Utah and the oldest still in operation. It was also the first house of the Lord where all temple ordinances — including endowments for the deceased — could be performed for the dead, which is why the work for the signers could finally be completed there.Q: Who was Lucy Bigelow Young, and what was her role in this experience?A: Lucy Bigelow Young was the first matron of the St. George Temple, remembered for her faith, humility, and a gift of healing. She was among the first women to perform endowments for the dead in this dispensation, and in this account she went to the font to be baptized for Martha Washington and dozens of other eminent women of history.Q: What does the Wilford Woodruff experience teach about our responsibility for temple work?A: The episode teaches that those in the spirit world who have accepted the gospel are waiting — even expecting — the living to complete their saving ordinances. Tia testifies that this work "parts the veil" faster than almost any other, and that we each stand in a position, like Wilford Woodruff and Lucy Bigelow Young, to receive revelation as we do the work of the gathering of Israel.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? There are a myriad of treatments and opinions about how anxiety should be treated. There is help in the Gathering of Israel that goes unnoticed by most. Jordan Liston testifies that as he gathers Israel and seeks to help those on the other side of the veil through prayer, he has found that his anxiety has lessened and is more manageable as the veil parts in behalf of his ancestors.  The Gathering of Israel is an outward turning of hearts, which shifts the focus from oneself to those who cannot help themselves. This turning allows the power of Jesus Christ to strengthen our own mental and emotional challenges, through the priesthood power of our ancestors. Kids Receiving Names From the Other Side of the Veil | A FamilySearch Dad & His Sons

Send us Fan MailCan a child receive revelation on behalf of an ancestor? In this episode, host Tia Smith sits down with Brian — who has worked at FamilySearch for six years — and his two sons, 14-year-old Seth and 8-year-old Dallas, to hear how their whole family began praying for the names of ancestors waiting for their temple work, and actually receiving them.Brian shares how, after years of searching the "old-fashioned" way, he was prompted to a lost ancestor by a quiet voice one morning — "don't forget my brother Samuel" — and how following that impression opened up multiple generations of family who had been waiting. Then Seth and Dallas, in their own words, describe praying for a name, feeling a specific person come to mind, writing it down, and finding they were related. It's a tender witness that this mission isn't reserved for adults — you can be a gatherer at 8 and at 14.Along the way, Brian testifies of the "waves of joy" he feels in the temple as ancestors receive their ordinances, the protection and angels promised to families who do this work (D&C 109), and how the newest tools at FamilySearch are hastening the work faster than anyone imagined. A recurring theme runs through it all: revelation is scattered — it isn't confined to one person — and when you're stuck, the Lord often prepares someone else to help you break through.Q: How do you pray to receive the name of an ancestor?A: Ask Heavenly Father to bring to your mind an ancestor who is waiting for their temple work. Then pay attention — a name may come as a thought, often upon waking, sometimes with a confirming feeling from the Spirit. Write it down right away, then search for the person on FamilySearch to see how they connect to your family.Q: Can children receive revelation for family history and temple work?A: Yes. In this episode, an 8-year-old and a 14-year-old each describe receiving a name and a spiritual confirmation. Children who have been baptized and received the gift of the Holy Ghost can seek and receive personal revelation — and can begin their "mission" of gathering Israel long before age 18.Q: What if I receive a name but can't figure out what to do with it?A: Keep moving forward and follow the small promptings. As Brian found, one name often leads to an entire family — a census record here, a missing sibling there. The name is given for a reason, and the help is there; sometimes it takes further revelation to understand exactly who it points to.Q: What blessings come to families who do temple and family history work together?A: Those featured testify of protection from evil, elevated spiritual power, greater ability to discern truth from error, and angels who have "charge over" the family (a promise from the Kirtland Temple dedication, D&C 109). Teaching children by example invites these blessings into the whole home.👉 Watch or listen to the full episode: [PASTE FULL EPISODE LINK]▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thinningoftheveil💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? The Hidden Symbols of the Salt Lake Temple | What Temple Architecture Teaches (LDS Temple Symbolism)

Send us Fan MailWhat do all the symbols on Latter-day Saint temples actually mean — the sunstones, moonstones, star stones, the six towers, and the angel Moroni? In this Thinning of the Veil teaching episode, host Tia Smith reads and reflects on Richard O. Cowan's article "Latter-day Saint (LDS) Temples as Symbols," tracing how temple buildings themselves teach the plan of salvation. From the reversible pulpits of the Kirtland Temple that taught the order of the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood, to the Nauvoo font resting on twelve oxen, to the richly symbolic exterior of the Salt Lake Temple, the episode unpacks how architecture points worshippers back toward God's presence. Learn why Brigham Young said he saw the Salt Lake Temple in vision with six towers, what the earthstones, moonstones, sunstones, and starstones represent, why temples face east toward the rising sun and the Second Coming, and how the angel Moroni became the recognized herald atop temples worldwide. Along the way Tia highlights the clasped hands, the all-seeing eye, the "I am Alpha and Omega" inscription, and the Big Dipper aligned with the North Star — small details that reveal how, as she puts it, God is in the details. If you want to walk into any temple with new eyes and a deeper understanding of temple symbolism, this episode is for you.Q: What do the sunstones, moonstones, and star stones on the Salt Lake Temple mean?A: In this episode, host Tia Smith shares Richard O. Cowan's explanation that the earthstones, moonstones, sunstones, and starstones on the Salt Lake Temple reminded Latter-day Saints of the three degrees of glory, and also reflect the order of nature — the earth, moon, sun, and stars — with lengthening time cycles pointing toward eternity.Q: Why does the Salt Lake Temple have six towers?A: Brigham Young testified that he saw the temple in vision and that it would have six towers rather than one. The three eastern towers represent the First Presidency and the Melchizedek Priesthood, and the three western towers represent the Presiding Bishopric and the Aaronic Priesthood, with twelve pinnacles on each tower symbolizing the Twelve Apostles.Q: Why do Latter-day Saint temples face east and feature the angel Moroni?A: The episode explains that most early temples were oriented toward the east, like ancient Israelite temples, symbolizing watching for the Second Coming of Christ, likened to the dawn of a new day. The angel Moroni, first placed on the Salt Lake Temple, represents the herald of the everlasting gospel going to all the world and has become the recognized symbol of temples worldwide.Q: What is the deeper meaning behind temple architecture and symbols?A: Tia teaches that temple buildings are powerful teaching tools, revealing the plan of salvation through their design — from baptismal fonts as a similitude of the grave, to instruction rooms and murals depicting our progress back into God's presence. The Hidden Symbolism of the Temple Baptistry | Oxen, Water & the Reeds (LDS Temple Symbolism)

Send us Fan MailWhat does the temple baptistry actually symbolize — the 12 oxen, the font, the water, even the reeds? In this deep-doctrine Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith shows that the baptistry, often treated as the "vanilla" part of the temple, is layered with Latter-day Saint (LDS) symbolism that points to Jesus Christ and the gathering of Israel. She teaches that the baptismal font is a similitude of the grave, placed on the lowest level of the temple, and that going into and out of the water mirrors the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Tia unpacks who the 12 oxen represent — the tribes of Israel, the Savior on whose strength the work rests, our ancestors on whose shoulders we stand, and even ourselves as covenant members — and connects the font to Joshua's 12 stones at the River Jordan, the lowest body of fresh water where Christ chose to be baptized, the reeds that saved the infant Moses, the laver of Moses's tabernacle, the molten sea of Solomon's temple, and Ezekiel's healing waters. She closes with the circle and the square — the meeting place of heaven and earth. If you want to walk into the baptistry with new eyes and teach your children and grandchildren its symbolism, this episode is for you.Q: What do the 12 oxen under the temple baptismal font symbolize?A: In this episode, host Tia Smith teaches that the 12 oxen represent the 12 tribes of Israel and the strength and power on which God's work rests. She adds that they can also point to the Savior, to our ancestors on whose sacrifices we stand, and to each of us as covenant members who bear off the work of salvation.Q: Why is the baptismal font a "similitude of the grave"?A: Joseph Smith taught that temple baptismal fonts were instituted as a similitude of the grave and placed beneath where the living assemble. Tia explains that immersion in the font mirrors the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is why the work for the dead begins there — helping our ancestors break the bonds of the grave through the Savior.Q: How does the River Jordan connect to the temple baptistry?A: Tia connects the font to Joshua leading the 12 tribes across the River Jordan and setting up 12 memorial stones, and to Jesus choosing to be baptized in the Jordan — the lowest body of fresh water on earth. Citing Russell M. Nelson, she teaches this symbolizes descending beneath all things to rise above all things, just as the font sits on the lowest level of the temple.Q: What do the reeds around the baptismal font represent?A: Tia teaches that reeds set behind the oxen on many fonts recall the infant Moses, hidden in a basket among the reeds and drawn out of the water to become a deliverer. She connects this to the pattern of both Moses and Jesus Christ as deliverers, and to our own call to become "saviors on Mount Zion" by doing baptisms for the dead.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Debra Bowen a member of the Church in the United States, also had promptings,  in different ways then Dennis, but no less effective in saving her family on the other side of the veil. EPHRAIM AND MANASSEH PREPARERS OF ZION

The tribe of Joseph, which includes both of his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh are to play a pivotal roll in the preparations leading up to the establishment of Zion. Each of these tribes have their individual responsibilities and strengths. However, when working with each other for the salvation of the rest of the "family", the House of Israel, miracles of untold proportions have, do, and will occur. Ephraim and Manasseh are brothers who have been called upon to help Israel be ready not only for Zion but to be prepare the world for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. BUILDING BRIDGES: Matthew Cowley, Oct. 1947

Send us Fan MailMatthew Cowley was an apostle of the Lord and champion of Native peoples the world over. He lived and served within many native communities. In this conference talk, given in Oct. 1947, he references the building of bridges. His life of service was devoted to building connections between all the sons and daughters of God, and this he did very well. However, he encourages in this talk to look even beyond this mortal existence to build bridges with our ancestors on the other side of the veil. He testifies that this takes place in the  Holy Houses of the Lord that are now dotting the earth. We are not only to become one with our brothers and sisters here, but we are to also connect our ancestors by building eternal bridges with them, becoming one with them. Thus creating Zion on both sides of the veil. MIRACLES IN AOTEAROA: Paora Te Potangaroa's Prophecy

Send us Fan MailBefore the early 1880's the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was not known among the Maori tribes of New Zealand. As God does in any age however, He prepares the way before the messengers of the Lord. Matakite are visionaries or seers within each Maori tribe. The Lord sent prophecies to some of these religious men and women to prepare the Maori people to receive the gospel when it began to be preached among them. One of this matakites was Paora Te Potangaroa. He was well loved and respected amongst his tribe. In answer to their questioning about which church to join and which was the only true church for them, Paora retired and sought council from the heavens. He received a remarkable prophecy that would prove to be fulfilled in every detail. A Māori Testimony of the Veil | Ancient Chants, Temple Visions & the Gathering of Israel (LDS)

Send us Fan MailHow does ancient Māori culture point to the temple and the gathering of Israel? In this remarkable Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith welcomes her friend John, an eighth-generation Māori Latter-day Saint (LDS) from New Zealand, for a "hui" — a coming together of Ephraim and Manasseh to testify. John shares the spiritual gifts that have run through his family and people: a grandfather who was visited before a loved one passed, temple experiences where he felt there was "no veil at all," and tender moments of seeing ancestors gathered around families as their temple work was completed. He tells the story of four siblings who appeared one by one at the baptismal font as their names came up, each whispering "thank you," and a dream that foretold a friend's temple sealing 15 years before it happened. John also unfolds a sacred Māori chant about two native birds — the tui and the huia — that speaks of binding and gathering, and how his wife's grandfather taught him it points to Elijah (the keys of sealing) and Moses (the keys of the gathering) restored in the Kirtland Temple. Woven through it all is a tender testimony that cultural identity, when centered on Jesus Christ, points His children home. If you love the gathering of Israel, temple symbolism, and testimonies from across the world, this conversation is for you.Q: How does Māori culture connect to Latter-day Saint temple worship and the gathering of Israel?A: In this episode, guest John — an eighth-generation Māori Latter-day Saint — shares how symbols, chants, and teachings passed down by his ancestors closely parallel temple worship. He unfolds a sacred chant about the tui and huia birds that speaks of binding and gathering, which his wife's grandfather taught him points to Elijah and Moses restoring the keys of sealing and gathering in the Kirtland Temple.Q: Can you feel your ancestors during temple and family history work?A: John testifies of repeated temple experiences where he sensed there was "no veil at all" — seeing families gathered and rejoicing as their work was completed, and four siblings appearing one by one at the baptismal font as their names came up, each whispering "thank you." He teaches that this work is not in vain, and that many on the other side are waiting and ready to receive it.Q: Are spiritual gifts like dreams and visions a normal part of faith?A: John shares that receptiveness to spiritual things has long been common among his people, and recounts a dream that foretold a friend's temple sealing 15 years before it happened. He and Tia testify that such gifts appear throughout the scriptures — in Lehi, Nephi, and Joseph Smith — and are given for a purpose: to gather God's children to Jesus Christ.Q: What does it mean that Ephraim and Manasseh are "brothers" in the gathering?A: Tia and John speak of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh coming together after long being separated, each carrying gifts meant to prepare the world for the Second Coming. John testifies that his people are "a mighty people" whose potential is unlocked when their identity is centered on the gospel of Jesus Christ.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Janet testifies of the "angels, mortal and immortal" who carried her through her darkest seasons — a friend who arrived at her door at the exact moment she needed rescue, priesthood blessings that brought healing, and tender experiences in the temple where she sensed her son present again. She shares the sacred moment during Derek's temple work when she and her husband both felt loved ones fill the room, and the assurance that Derek is now whole, endowed, and serving on the other side of the veil. Along the way, Janet and Tia speak honestly about grief, depression, and the quiet darkness so many carry — and testify that believing our loved ones beyond the veil still know us, love us, and long for us is the first step to recognizing their ministering. If you have lost a child or someone you love, or are walking through a dark season, this conversation is offered as a witness of hope.Q: Do our loved ones who have died still know us and watch over us?A: Janet and host Tia Smith testify that those beyond the veil — family members, ancestors, and even the prophets of old — are aware of us and long to help, even when they cannot communicate as fully as they wish. They teach that believing this is possible is the first step to recognizing the ministering of angels, both mortal and immortal.Q: Can Latter-day Saint parents who have lost a child feel connected to them again?A: Janet shares tender experiences of sensing her son Derek after his passing — feeling him present during his temple work, receiving reassurance in a dream, and coming to know he is whole and serving on the other side of the veil. She and Tia testify that these relationships can continue, and encourage temple and family history work as a way to labor alongside loved ones who have passed on.Q: How can temple and family history work help with grief and healing?A: Janet describes the temple as a place of light and a "portal" filled with loved ones, sharing the joy she felt as an ancestor was reunited with family after her work was completed. She and Tia testify that temple worship brings light into dark seasons, and that as we help those beyond the veil, they in turn help us.Q: What does this episode teach about facing depression and hard times with faith?A: Janet speaks openly about years of depression and dark seasons, and counsels reaching toward light, connection, and other people rather than isolating — testifying that angels come "in one form or another" when we refuse to give up. She and Tia encourage being gentle with yourself, caring for both your spiritual and physical wellbeing, and trusting that you are being tutored and are never truly alone.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? "His Grace Is Sufficient" | Brad Wilcox on Grace, Perfectionism & Becoming (LDS Talk)

Send us Fan MailWhat does it really mean that the grace of Jesus Christ is "sufficient"? In this Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith opens up about perfectionism, feeling unqualified, and the online backlash and dark seasons she has weathered while being asked to testify — then shares one of the talks that has strengthened her most: Brad Wilcox's beloved Latter-day Saint (LDS) devotional "His Grace Is Sufficient" (Brigham Young University, 2011). Wilcox teaches that grace is not about Jesus making up the difference between our efforts and perfection — it's about Christ making all the difference, filling us and transforming us. Using his famous piano-lessons analogy, he explains why the Savior asks so much of us: not to repay a debt already paid in full, but because obedience and repentance are how we practice, change, and learn to feel at home in God's presence. For anyone tired of feeling like they're always falling short — anyone battling perfectionism, discouragement, anxiety, or the feeling of not being "worthy enough" — this message is a reminder that grace is not the light at the end of the tunnel, but the light that moves us through it. If you needed to hear that God's grace is enough for you right now, this episode is for you.Q: What does Brad Wilcox teach about grace in "His Grace Is Sufficient"?A: Wilcox teaches that grace is not about Jesus filling the gap between our efforts and perfection, but about Christ making all the difference — paying our debt in full and filling and transforming us. Host Tia Smith shares this Brigham Young University devotional (2011) as a message of hope for anyone who feels they are always falling short.Q: If grace covers everything, why does Jesus still ask so much of us?A: Using the analogy of a mother paying for piano lessons and then asking her child to practice, Wilcox explains that obedience, repentance, and covenants are not payments to justice — that debt is already paid. They are how we show appreciation, practice, and change, so that we learn to feel at home in God's presence.Q: How does understanding grace help with perfectionism and discouragement?A: The episode teaches that there should never be only two options — perfection or giving up. Wilcox testifies that change is a process, repentance is a pattern, and Christ is with us every step, not waiting at the finish line. Tia connects this to her own struggle with perfectionism and the encouragement to keep trying.Q: Is grace received only "after all we can do"?A: Wilcox, citing Elder Bruce C. Hafen, teaches that grace is not a booster engine that kicks in once our own fuel runs out, but a constant energy source available before, during, and after our efforts. Tia shares this as reassurance that the Savior's enabling power is available right here and right now.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? Reyna Aburto on Suicide, Grief & Finding the Savior in the Darkness | "It's Not You, It's the Cloud" (LDS)

Send us Fan MailHow do we find the Savior in our darkest seasons — through depression, grief, and the loss of someone we love? In this tender Thinning of the Veil episode, host Tia Smith sits down with Sister Reyna I. Aburto, former Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency and author of Reaching for the Savior, for an honest, hope-filled conversation about mental health, grief, and healing through Jesus Christ. Reyna speaks openly about losing her father to suicide, losing her brother in a childhood earthquake, and the long journey of grief — and shares the image at the heart of her general conference message "Through Cloud and Sunshine, Lord, Abide with Me": that when everything feels dark, the sun is still shining above the clouds. "You are not the problem," she testifies. "The problem is the cloud." Together she and Tia bear witness of the ministering of angels on both sides of the veil, the comfort of the plan of salvation, and how temple and family history work has brought them healing — including tender experiences of sensing loved ones who have passed. This is a Latter-day Saint (LDS) conversation offered as hope for anyone carrying a heavy load. You are not alone, and the Savior is aware of you.If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. In the U.S., you can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, 24/7.Q: What does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teach about suicide?A: Sister Reyna Aburto teaches that life is a sacred gift, and that mental and emotional illness should be treated with the same compassion as any physical illness. She testifies that we should never judge those who die by suicide or their families, because we cannot know their circumstances, and that the Savior extends mercy and understanding to all.Q: How can we support someone struggling with depression or a mental health crisis?A: Reyna shares the image of a storm cloud: those in the light often can't see how dark it is below, and those in the darkness can't see the light — so the answer is to fight the cloud together. She counsels turning to the Savior and the scriptures, reaching outward to serve others, being vulnerable, and seeking professional help, while believing and validating those who say they are hurting.Q: How can temple and family history work help with grief and healing?A: Reyna shares tender experiences of feeling close to those she serves in the temple, and the healing that came when her parents were finally sealed and she was sealed to them — releasing years of pain. She and Tia testify that as we do this work, the veil can thin and loved ones who have passed can minister to us.Q: How do angels — on both sides of the veil — minister to us?A: Reyna testifies that she has felt help from ancestors beyond the veil and from countless "angels" here in mortality — friends and strangers whose small acts of kindness changed her life. She and Tia encourage looking outward for chances to lift others, teaching that revelation often comes most clearly when we are seeking to help someone else.▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572121559456💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? "I GOT A VERY STRONG IMPRESSION THAT THERE'S SOMEONE'S WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE"

Send us Fan MailDoes God really speak to children — and to ordinary mothers in the middle of everyday life? In this Mother's Day episode, host Tia Smith welcomes her friend Whitney and Whitney's 12-year-old son, Oliver, to share how learning to hear the Lord transformed their family, and how even a child can receive the names of ancestors waiting for their temple work.Oliver describes the moment it happened: riding home from basketball practice, listening to the podcast, he asked his mom if he could receive names too — and minutes later a name came clearly to his mind. He wrote it down, they searched FamilySearch, and found the very person who needed all his temple work done. A tender witness that this mission belongs to the young as much as the old.Whitney shares her own journey of intently seeking revelation — cutting out distractions, going to the temple weekly, and learning to recognize the Lord's voice — including a sacred experience in which her eyes were opened to ancestors filling her home and the Savior kneeling beside her with the assurance, "you're never really alone." She also shares how bearing testimony to ancestors during temple ordinances changed everything, and how she leads her children not by forcing testimony but by letting them walk through both the struggles and the miracles alongside her.Running through it all: revelation is a skill that grows, the Savior wants to speak to us in many ways, and as we focus on others, God focuses on us.Q: Can children receive revelation and find temple names?A: Yes. In this episode a 12-year-old describes receiving names clearly and immediately after simply praying to ask if anyone needed their work done. Children who have been baptized and received the gift of the Holy Ghost can seek and receive personal revelation — often more readily than adults, because they don't doubt that it can happen.Q: How can I learn to hear God's voice more clearly?A: Whitney's approach was to remove distractions, spend consistent time in the scriptures and the temple, and — crucially — act on the promptings she received. She also prayed directly to be tutored on how the Lord speaks to her. Recognizing revelation is a skill that grows line upon line as you follow through.Q: How do I teach my children to receive revelation?A: Lead by example and let them be part of the journey. Have natural, ongoing conversations about God, share your own experiences (including your struggles, not just the outcomes), and let them witness the miracles in real time. Children absorb far more than we expect.Q: What does bearing testimony to ancestors in the temple do?A: Whitney describes silently bearing her testimony to each person as their ordinances were performed — and feeling their presence powerfully, something a temple worker independently noticed too. It shifts the focus from ourselves to those we're serving and can deepen the spirit of the work.👉 Watch or listen to the full episode: [PASTE FULL EPISODE LINK]▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thinningoftheveil💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? "FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS" Wendy Nelson, BYU Women's Conference, May 2007

Send us Fan MailDo you ever wonder whether you have a mission — a specific reason you were sent to earth right now? In this Mother's Day episode, host Tia Smith shares and reflects on Sister Wendy Nelson's powerful 2007 BYU Women's Conference message, "For Such a Time as This," about the divine mission of every woman of God (LDS) — whether or not she is a mother by birth.Drawing on the story of Queen Esther, Sister Nelson teaches that we are here now because we agreed pre-mortally to accomplish specific assignments — and that our heartaches, challenges, and even our most discouraging trials are often exactly what prepare us with the "skill and understanding" the Lord needs us to have. Tia adds her own witness that seeking your mission will stretch you beyond your comfort zone, and that as covenant women we have real power to change the world on both sides of the veil. This episode also opens with a tender reflection on the ministering of angels — the comfort of knowing that loved ones who pass on become part of our growing "army of angels," ministering to us from the other side.Q: Does every woman really have a divine mission — even if she isn't a mother?A: Yes. The teaching here is that every person was sent to earth to accomplish specific assignments agreed to pre-mortally, and that a woman fulfills her role regardless of whether she has children. Feeling restless or "underused" can be a sign the Spirit is nudging you toward more of what you came to do.Q: How do I discover what my personal mission is?A: Seek it through prayer, the scriptures, and the temple — consistently, not just once. Sometimes the mission is found right where the Lord has already placed you. Increasing obedience and consecrating your gifts to Him position you to recognize and fulfill it, line upon line.Q: Why would God give me hard trials if He has a mission for me?A: Because, as Sister Nelson teaches, some of the most heart-wrenching experiences are designed to prepare us with the very skills and understanding the Lord needs us to have. As we trust in His power and timing, we can come through our trials refined rather than consumed.Q: What is the prophesied role of women in the last days?A: President Spencer W. Kimball prophesied that much of the Church's latter-day growth will come as the good women of the world are drawn to the example of covenant women who reflect righteousness and are seen as "distinct and different in happy ways" from the women of the world.👉 Watch or listen to the full episode: [PASTE FULL EPISODE LINK]▶️ WATCH & LISTEN🎬 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveil🌐 Website: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinning-of-the-veil/id1753511394🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6jWCfMHkZXwnSwy2b98J4M🎵 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/a0a45561-d4c2-46d3-af8d-a1e967a21a25📖 BOOKPatterns of Revelation — Spiritual Foundations for Hearing God's Voice: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW36MG9B📱 CONNECTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veilFacebook Group (Gathering of the Gatherers): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429562078443774Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/thinningoftheveil💛 SUPPORT THE SHOWVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil✉️ Have you had a thinning of the veil experience? ANGELS ROUND ABOUT YOU | Ministering of Angels Through Grief (LDS) with Jen Davis

Send us Fan MailDoes the ministering of angels really happen in our darkest moments? In LDS (Latter-day Saint) scripture, Moroni testifies that angels are sent to "minister unto the children of men" — and this episode explores exactly what that looks like in real life. There are times of trouble and trials in our lives, times where we feel that the heavens are definitely closed. Those challenging times are perfect opportunities to experience the ministering of angels. For years Jen Davis was prompted to study the patterns and doctrines of angelic ministrations in the scriptures and other sourced material. Little did she know that studying would be something she would rely on after losing her son tragically, years later. Jen testifies of the miracles, manifestations, and lessons from heaven that she has received from the other side of the veil that helped her walk through her grief. Through the ministering of angels, she has learned that in her extremity, God the Father and the Savior know and love her beyond comprehension.Q: Do Latter-day Saints believe angels can minister to us during grief? A: Yes — Moroni testifies in the Book of Mormon that angels are sent to "minister unto the children of men." In this episode, Jen Davis shares how her years of studying angelic ministration in the scriptures became a lifeline after tragically losing her son, and testifies of the miracles and lessons from heaven that helped her walk through grief.Q: Where does the Book of Mormon talk about the ministering of angels? A: Moroni's teaching that angels minister to the children of men anchors this episode, alongside patterns and doctrines of angelic ministration drawn from scripture and other sourced material.YouTube: Angels Round About You Video: https://youtu.be/TClo2ZQ8KysYouTube Thinning of the Veil Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveilSUPPORT THE SHOW: Website: Thinning of the Veil: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com/Venmo:  https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USBook: "Patterns of Revelation":  https://www.amazon.com/Patterns-Revelation-Spiritual-Foundations-Hearing-ebook/dp/B0BWGLZ8VXEmail: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veil/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thinning.of.the.veil/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thinning.of.the.veil Support the show

Evil Spirits | What Latter-day Saints Teach About Satan, Opposition & Overcoming (LDS)

Send us Fan MailWhat do Latter-day Saints teach about evil spirits — and how do we overcome them? This episode confronts a topic many avoid: the reality of Satan and his angels, and the power God has given us to withstand them. Anchored in the principle that there must be "opposition in all things" (2 Nephi 2:11), it teaches that thinning of the veil experiences from the light are matched by opposition from the dark — and that this is part of the plan, not cause for fear. Drawing on the three great scriptural patterns — Joseph Smith seized by darkness before the First Vision (Joseph Smith—History 1:15–17), Moses commanding "Depart hence, Satan" on the mount (Moses 1:12–22), and the Savior's own three temptations (JST Matthew 4) — this episode shows the same pattern each time: opposition, then, through priesthood power and calling on God, deliverance and revelation. It teaches the difference between unembodied, disembodied, and mortal agents of the adversary; what it means to be "sealed his" (Alma 34:35); the bounds and laws that limit evil spirits (Doctrine and Covenants 129; Joseph Smith); how to build a "fortress" through covenants (President Russell M. Nelson); and where the line falls between righteous seeking of the dead and forbidden "familiar spirits" (Isaiah 8:19; 2 Nephi 26:16). It closes with Heber C. Kimball's harrowing 1837 account of evil spirits in England, and Elder David A. Bednar's witness of the protecting power of temple covenants.Q: What do Latter-day Saints believe about evil spirits and Satan?A: Latter-day Saint doctrine teaches that Satan and the third of the hosts of heaven who followed him were cast out and denied bodies, and now oppose God's work and seek to lead people away from Christ (Doctrine and Covenants 29:36–37; Moses 4). But their power is bounded and limited by law (Doctrine and Covenants 129; Joseph Smith taught that "wicked spirits have their bounds, limits, and laws"), and the power of Jesus Christ always supersedes the power of the adversary.Q: How do we overcome the influence of Satan, according to LDS teaching?A: Through the power of Jesus Christ, accessed by covenants and priesthood power. This episode traces the same pattern in Joseph Smith, Moses, and the Savior Himself: opposition comes first, and deliverance follows as they call upon God and refuse to yield. President Russell M. Nelson taught that the way to "survive spiritually" is to let God prevail, learn to hear His voice, and use our energy to gather Israel — building a "fortress" of covenant strength that the adversary cannot penetrate.Q: Is it wrong to seek to communicate with deceased loved ones?A: There is a crucial distinction. Isaiah warns against seeking "familiar spirits" and wizards "that peep and mutter" (Isaiah 8:19) — meaning necromancy, mediums, and occult practices, which are forbidden. But Nephi clarifies that the living may righteously "hear from the dead" by seeking unto God (2 Nephi 18:19), through priesthood authority and the temple. The dead "whisper out of the dust" (2 Nephi 26:16) for one purpose: to turn hearts to the covenants and to Jesus Christ, that "the prisoners shall go free" (Doctrine and Covenants 128:22).Q: How do temple covenants protect us from evil?A: Elder David A. Bednar taught that there is a real difference between members who occasionally attend and those who "faithfully and consistently worship in the temple" — and that the ordinances and covenants of the house of the Lord carry protecting power, as promised in the Kirtland Temple dedicatory prayer (Doctrine and Covenants 109:24–26): "no weapon formed against them shall prosper." The devil despises the temple precisely because its protection stands as a great obstacle to his designs. Divine Love and Temple | Three Deaths, a Dream, and Five Baptisms — Jihae Kwon, BYU-Hawaii 2024 (LDS)

Send us Fan MailCan the love of God bring an entire family into the gospel — starting from the other side of the veil? In this BYU-Hawaii devotional (March 5, 2025), Professor Jihae Kwon shares how her Korean family came to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through a chain of miracles that began with three deaths and a birth. In 1972–74, Kwon's great-grandmother, grandfather, and father all died within two years of each other. Eight days after Jihae's birth, her father — who had never been religious — appeared in her mother's dream and told her about the resurrection. That Easter Sunday, her mother went to church for the first time. Months later, her Aunt Kihong walked into the Church and asked to be baptized. Then her grandfather — a staunch Buddhist who had once expelled his mother from the house for converting to Catholicism — appeared in another aunt's dream holding the Bible and declared, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church on earth." Within three years, five women in the family were baptized. What followed was decades of gathering: Aunt Kihong's patriarchal blessing mentioned genealogy work she didn't want to do — but a miraculous week-long research trip where she found every person, every house, and every name without addresses or phone numbers proved God was in the details. Jihae herself was laid off from her job and heard a clear impression: "Perfect — I can do genealogy." Six months, ~1,000 names per day, and one week after finishing, a job offer arrived. As of early 2024, more than 17,000 ordinances for her family's submitted names have been completed in temples around the world — more than 3,000 per day. Her witness: the love of God moves across the veil, across nations, and across generations to gather His children home.Q: Can deceased family members appear in dreams to lead the living to the gospel?A: Jihae Kwon's family experienced this repeatedly: her father appeared in her mother's dream eight days after his death and spoke of the resurrection — her mother attended church for the first time that Easter Sunday. Later, her grandfather, a lifelong Buddhist, appeared in an aunt's dream holding the Bible and declaring the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be the only true church. Within three years, five family members were baptized.Q: How does God help with family history research?A: In this devotional, Aunt Kihong traveled to Korea for genealogy research without addresses, phone numbers, or appointments — and found every person, every house, and every name she needed, including names of people who died as infants. Years later, Jihae was laid off from her job and heard a clear impression: "Perfect, I can do genealogy." She entered roughly 1,000 names per day for six months, and one week after finishing, received a job offer — "by divine intervention," she says.Q: How fast is temple work being done worldwide?A: As of early 2024, Jihae Kwon reported that more than 3,000 ordinances per day were being completed for her family's submitted names — in temples around the world — totaling more than 17,000 ordinances in less than a year. Her witness: "It's amazing, humbling, and terrifying at the same time to see how fast ordinances are done in temples all around the world." The Spiritual Manifestations of Alex Haley | Roots, Ancestral Voices & the Spirit of Elijah (LDS)

Send us Fan MailDid the author of Roots hear his ancestors' voices — and did the Spirit of Elijah guide the most-watched television event in American history? In a 1993 BYU-Idaho devotional called "Family Histories," Elder J. Richard Clark — who oversaw the Church's family history department — shared what Alex Haley personally told him about the spiritual experiences behind the book that changed the world's relationship to genealogy. While researching Kunta Kinte's story aboard a freighter crossing the Atlantic, Haley forced himself into the ship's hold night after night, lying on a plank in the dark, listening to the sounds his ancestor must have heard. On the fourth night, overwhelmed by debt, eleven years of work, and near despair, he stood at the stern rail and heard voices urging him to step through into the sea. Then he heard other voices — conversational, familiar: "No, don't do that. You must finish. You must go on." He knew exactly who they were: Kunta Kinte, Belle, Chicken George, his grandmother — the ancestors he had been writing about. "From that night forward," Haley said, "I never had the misgivings or the tortures... I began to think that perhaps I was some kind of a conduit." When Clark later visited Haley at his Tennessee farm and suggested "an invisible hand" was guiding this work, Haley slammed his fist on his knee and said, "That's right. I felt the guiding hand of the Lord as I wrote my book." Roots became the bestselling book in U.S. publishing history, was translated into 30 languages, and reached an estimated 130 million television viewers. One year after its broadcast, in June 1978, the revelation extending the priesthood to all of God's children was announced. Elder David A. Bednar has taught that the Spirit of Elijah — "a manifestation of the Holy Ghost bearing witness of the divine nature of the family" — affects people inside and outside the Church. Alex Haley's story is one of its most powerful witnesses.Q: Did Alex Haley have spiritual experiences while writing Roots?A: Yes — Alex Haley personally told Elder J. Richard Clark that while aboard a freighter researching Kunta Kinte's story, he heard ancestral voices at a moment of near despair, urging him to finish the book. He described the experience as "almost like a religious experience" and said, "I think that it would be blasphemous for anyone to think he could write a thing like this without the help of the Lord."Q: What is the Spirit of Elijah?A: Elder Russell M. Nelson taught that the Spirit of Elijah is "a manifestation of the Holy Ghost bearing witness of the divine nature of the family." Elder David A. Bednar added that it affects people both inside and outside the Church — and that members have a covenant responsibility to search out their ancestors and provide saving ordinances for them. Alex Haley, who was not a Latter-day Saint, is one of the clearest examples of the Spirit of Elijah working upon someone outside the Church to turn the hearts of millions to their forebears.Q: How did Roots affect family history research worldwide?A: According to an article in the Congressional Quarterly cited by Elder Clark, Alex Haley's Roots "is the primary cause of the worldwide surge in interest in family history." The book sold six million copies, was translated into 30 languages, and the television miniseries reached 130 million viewers — the largest program audience in television history at the time. One year after the broadcast, the 1978 revelation extending the priesthood and temple blessings to all of God's children was announced — a timing Elder Clark called part of a "predetermined course" guided by "an invisible hand."YouTube: The Spiritual Manifestations of Alex Haley Video: https://youtu.be/Vtwz7EH2jNAYouTube Thinning of the Veil Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveilSUPPORT THE SHOW: Website: Thinning of the Veil: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com/Venmo:  https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USBook: "Patterns of Revelation":  https://www.amazon.com/Patterns-Revelation-Spiritual-Foundations-Hearing-ebook/dp/B0BWGLZ8VXEmail: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veil/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thinning.of.the.veil/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thinning.of.the.veilCITATIONS: J. Dreams and Visions After the Bear River Massacre | Darren Parry on the Shoshone Conversion (LDS)

Send us Fan MailHow did a people who survived the largest massacre of Native Americans in U.S. history come to be baptized — in the same river where it happened — through dreams and visions from the other side of the veil? Darren Parry, sixth-generation Shoshone Latter-day Saint, former tribal chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, and direct descendant of Chief Sagwich, shares the conversion story of his people. On January 29, 1863, more than 450 Shoshone men, women, and children were massacred by the U.S. Army at the Bear River. Ten years later, Chief Sagwich began having dreams: three men appeared and told him of a God among the Mormon people and that he was to send for missionaries. He went three days in a row to the home of George Washington Hill, a former missionary who spoke fluent Shoshone, asking him to come teach. Three times George said no — there is order in the Lord's church. On the fourth day, George received a telegram from Brigham Young summoning him to Salt Lake City: "George, I have a heavy burden on my shoulders, and that burden is now going to be yours. I am calling you to be a missionary again to the Shoshone people." When George returned home, Sagwich was sitting on his porch. George promised to come, but said it would take time. That night George's train derailed and he was sent home — instead, he jumped a freight train north. The next morning, walking toward the Shoshone camp without knowing the exact location, he saw a man riding toward him leading a second horse. It was Sagwich, who said: "I had another dream last night. The Great Spirit said you would be coming this morning. I am here to pick you up." George's journal records: "After eating the best breakfast that ever was, I commenced to teaching them the gospel of Christ. And three hours later, I baptized 102 Shoshone's in the Bear River." The same river. Ten years after the massacre. Most of those baptized were survivors. Darren also shares how Sagwich and his people helped build the Logan Temple — on a hill the Shoshone had considered sacred healing ground long before the temple was announced — and how a temple ledger found in a basement room contained 80 Shoshone names with the death date January 29, 1863: Sagwich had done their temple work himself. The episode closes with a miracle in the Logan Temple archive: a book, already open to the exact page, with the exact name Darren's great-grandmother and grandmother had come searching for. (Darren Parry is the author of "The Bear River Massacre" and "Tending the Sacred: How Indigenous Wisdom Will Save the World.")Q: How were the Shoshone people converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?A: Ten years after the Bear River Massacre of 1863, Chief Sagwich began having dreams in which three men appeared and told him of a God among the Mormon people and that he was to send for missionaries. After Sagwich visited George Washington Hill three days in a row — and was turned away each time — Brigham Young, without knowing of Sagwich's visits, sent George a telegram calling him on a mission to the Shoshone. On the morning George arrived, Sagwich was already riding toward him with a second horse, having dreamed the night before that George would be coming. Three hours after their meeting, George baptized 102 Shoshone in the Bear River — the same river where the massacre had occurred.Q: Did Chief Sagwich help build the Logan Temple?A: Yes — Sagwich and men from the Shoshone community of Washakie were among the largest groups to donate labor to the building of the Logan Temple, carrying rocks and mortar. The temple sits on a hill the Shoshone had considered sacred healing ground long before the Church announced its construction. Sagwich later performed temple work for his people in that same temple, including work for at least 80 individuals who died in the 1863 massacre — their names preserved in a ledger discovered in a basement room of the Logan Temple.Q: What miracle happened in the Logan Temple archive?A: Darren Parry's great-grandmother Amy Hoo Chu Timbimboo and his grandmother went to the Logan Temple to search for a name in the archive — a room filled with books floor to ceiling. The temple recorder told them he didn't know where to begin. But one book was already open on the table, turned to a page containing the exact name they had come to find. As Darren tells it: "Somebody had opened that book for them and left it there so they could find it."YouTube: Dreams and Visions After the Bear River Massacre Video: https://youtu.be/9H7MVEvDpQwYouTube Thinning of the Veil Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveilBook: "The Bear River Massacre: A Shoshone History" by Darren Parry: https://www.amazon.com/Bear-River-Massacre-Shoshone-History/dp/1948218208Book: "Tending the Sacred: How Indigenous Wisdom will Save the World": https://www.amazon.com/Tending-Sacred-Indigenous-Wisdom-World/dp/1961471248 SUPPORT THE SHOW: Website: Thinning of the Veil: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com/Venmo:  https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USBook: "Patterns of Revelation":  https://www.amazon.com/Patterns-Revelation-Spiritual-Foundations-Hearing-ebook/dp/B0BWGLZ8VXEmail: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veil/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thinning.of.the.veil/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thinning.of.the.veilSupport the show

The Israelite Temple and the Early Christians | Did Christians Practice Temple Worship? — Matthew B. Brown, FAIR 2011 (LDS)

Send us Fan MailDid the early Christians practice temple worship — and is there evidence connecting the rituals of the Israelite temple with the ordinances of the first-century Church? In this FAIR conference talk (2011), the late Matthew B. Brown systematically examines two common claims: that the Atonement made temple worship obsolete, and that temple ceremonies were never part of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The biblical and historical evidence he presents calls both claims into question. Drawing from the books of Acts, Revelation, the Psalms, and the earliest Christian liturgical documents (compiled by Dr. Maxwell Johnson of Notre Dame), Brown traces twelve promises made in the book of Revelation to those who "overcome" — and shows that each one corresponds to an initiation rite of the Israelite kings and priests: eating of the tree of life (return to Eden), washing, anointing with olive oil, investiture with white linen, receiving a new name, adoption and inheritance, enthronement, the name of God written on the forehead, and entering the Holy of Holies. He then demonstrates that the early Christians practiced these same elements in their own initiation liturgy — including anointing of the body with consecrated olive oil, investiture with white garments specifically called "the glorious robe which Adam lost," the wearing of ceremonial aprons (documented in Egyptian Christian burials), right-hand clasps at a veiled entrance, renunciation of Satan by covenant, and an embrace between initiator and initiate. The talk closes with a remarkable parallel: the three-level architecture of Eastern Orthodox churches (nave = earth, vestibule = Garden of Eden, choir = Holy of Holies) mirrors the ascending pattern of Solomon's Temple — and the initiation rites of Greek Orthodox monks to this day include a new name, exchange of questions and answers at a veiled doorway, investiture with sacred clothing including an embroidered apron bearing symbols of Adam and paradise, and a concluding embrace.Q: Did early Christians practice temple worship after the Atonement of Jesus Christ?A: The New Testament shows they did. The apostles continued teaching in the temple daily (Acts 2:46), the Apostle Paul submitted to temple purification rites and received a vision of the resurrected Lord while praying there (Acts 22:17–18), and the book of Revelation describes white-robed kings and priests serving in the heavenly temple — all after the crucifixion. Matthew B. Brown argues that the tearing of the temple veil did not signal to the first-century Christians that the temple was obsolete.Q: What are the twelve promises in the book of Revelation, and what do they have to do with the temple?A: Brown identifies twelve promises made to "him that overcometh" in Revelation and shows each one corresponds to an initiation rite of the Israelite kings and priests: eating of the tree of life (return to paradise), not being hurt by the second death (priestly access to God's presence), receiving hidden manna, a new name, power over nations, the morning star, white raiment, name in the book of life, being made a pillar in God's temple, God's name on the forehead, sitting on Christ's throne, and divine adoption with inheritance.Q: Is there archaeological evidence that early Christians wore ceremonial temple clothing?A: Yes — Brown cites Christian burials in Egypt where monks were interred wearing leather aprons over white linen garments, some bearing symbolic markings. The earliest Christian liturgical documents (compiled by Dr. Maxwell Johnson of Notre Dame) describe initiates being invested with white vestments called "the glorious robe which Adam lost," receiving crowns, and wearing "garments of glory" — language directly paralleling the priestly vestments described in Exodus 28.Q: How does the architecture of Eastern Orthodox churches reflect the temple?A: Eastern Orthodox church buildings mirror Solomon's Temple in three ascending levels: the nave (representing earth), the vestibule (the Garden of Eden), and the choir or Holy of Holies (heaven), separated by a veiled barrier called the iconostasis. Only certain clergy may pass through the veil into the most holy place — the same pattern as the Israelite temple, where only the high priest entered the Holy of Holies. Parting of the Veil at Pulehu | David O. McKay, George Q. Cannon & the Maui Miracle (LDS)

Send us Fan MailCan the veil part for five people at once — and can a son stand in the presence of his deceased father? In February 1921, then-Apostle David O. McKay stood under a pepper tree on the grounds of the little chapel at Pulehu, Maui, where George Q. Cannon had experienced intense spiritual manifestations seventy years earlier while serving as a missionary to Hawaii. McKay felt impressed to offer a prayer of thanksgiving. During that prayer, with five men standing in a circle with bowed heads and closed eyes, Brother Keola Kalamai saw a vision: two men stepped out of line and shook hands. He thought Hugh J. Cannon and Elder Hearst had opened their eyes — but when he looked, both were still standing with heads bowed. He had seen George Q. Cannon and Joseph F. Smith — the fathers of two of the men in that circle — greeting them from the other side of the veil. When McKay said, "I do not know the significance of your vision, but I do know that the veil between us and those former missionaries was very thin," Hugh J. Cannon, with tears rolling down his cheeks, whispered: "Brother McKay, there was no veil." This episode gathers all five firsthand accounts — Samuel Harris Hearst Jr.'s diary (written within hours), E. Wesley Smith's record, Hugh J. Cannon's narrative, and David O. McKay's own retellings across decades, including his 1955 reenactment on the same grounds. Each man experienced the event differently — one saw, one felt, one wept, one knew — and yet all testified that the veil was very thin. The episode also recounts the earlier manifestation at the same site: George Q. Cannon in 1850, appearing to stand in the air with a halo of light, as more than 100 people were transfigured before him.Q: What happened at Pulehu, Maui, in 1921?A: During a prayer of thanksgiving under a pepper tree, five men — including Apostle David O. McKay, Hugh J. Cannon (son of George Q. Cannon), and E. Wesley Smith (son of President Joseph F. Smith) — experienced a collective thinning of the veil. Brother Keola Kalamai saw a vision of two men shaking hands; McKay identified them as George Q. Cannon and Joseph F. Smith, the deceased fathers of two men in the prayer circle. Hugh J. Cannon, deeply moved, said: "Brother McKay, there was no veil."Q: Did each person experience the Pulehu vision the same way?A: No — and that is one of the episode's key teachings. Kalamai saw a vision of two men; McKay felt the veil was "very thin"; Cannon felt there was "no veil" and sensed his father's presence; Hearst recorded feeling profoundly stirred; Smith confirmed the sacredness of the moment. Each experienced the same event through a different spiritual sense — sight, feeling, knowing — demonstrating that revelatory experiences come in many forms.Q: Was David O. McKay's world tour accompanied by spiritual manifestations?A: Yes — the 1920–21 world tour, during which McKay (then age 47) visited Japan, Korea, China, Hawaii, the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Europe, included numerous spiritual experiences. The Pulehu prayer is among the most documented, with five firsthand accounts preserved. McKay himself returned to Pulehu in 1955 as president of the Church and reenacted the experience on the same grounds for a group of 44.Q: What happened at Pulehu with George Q. Cannon in 1850?A: George Q. Cannon, serving as a young missionary, delivered a discourse at a small church on the grounds where the Pulehu chapel now stands. The Hawaiian tradition holds that during that sermon, Cannon appeared to be standing in the air rather than on the ground, with a great light shining around him, and that all but three of the more than 100 people present were transfigured before him.YouTube: Healing for the Dead and the Living Video: https://youtu.be/9QYNFq3EA6QYouTube Thinning of the Veil Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveilSUPPORT THE SHOW: Website: Thinning of the Veil: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com/Venmo:  https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USBook: "Patterns of Revelation":  https://www.amazon.com/Patterns-Revelation-Spiritual-Foundations-Hearing-ebook/dp/B0BWGLZ8VXEmail: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veil/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thinning.of.the.veil/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thinning.of.the.veilCITATIONS: Lavina F. Ancient Prayer Circles | Stonehenge, Early Christians & the Temple — What the Ancients Knew (LDS)

Send us Fan MailAre prayer circles ancient — and do monuments like Stonehenge echo patterns of temple worship? This episode traces the prayer circle from Adam and Eve through the earliest Christian documents and into the ancient stone circles of the United Kingdom, connecting them to the temple worship of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hugh Nibley's BYU Studies article "The Early Prayer Circle" provides the foundation: the Acts of John (early third century) describes Christ commanding his disciples to "form a circle, taking hold of each other's hand, and he himself taking up a position in the middle" — a rite Nibley shows grows more prominent the further back in history one looks, until the Second Council of Nicaea (787 AD) condemned the documents containing it to the flames. An even older text attributed to Clement of Rome describes a bishop standing in the middle of a circle, men and women assigned places in the four directions, with angels witnessing the prayer — a pattern unmistakably echoed in our own temples. In 3 Nephi 17, the Savior places little children in a circle around him, kneels in their midst, and offers a prayer so sacred it could not be recorded — after which angels descend and "encircled those little ones about" and ministered to them. The episode then turns to the henges of England — Stonehenge and Thornborough — and draws striking parallels: circular sacred spaces with inner and outer courts, white-surfaced banks (gypsum, like white clothing), orientation to sun, moon, and stars (the three degrees of glory), burials of ancestors within the sacred precinct, altar stones, and causeways restricting entry to the worthy. President Joseph F. Smith taught that the knowledge of these rites "was carried by the posterity of Adam into all lands" — and we should expect to find relics of it among nations "whose histories date back beyond the days of Moses and even beyond the flood." This episode shows those relics, still standing.Q: Are prayer circles an ancient practice?A: Yes — Hugh Nibley documented in his BYU Studies article "The Early Prayer Circle" that the rite appears in the earliest Christian texts. The Acts of John (early third century) describes Jesus commanding his disciples to form a circle holding hands, with him in the center, leading a sacred prayer. An even older text attributed to Clement of Rome describes a bishop in the center, men and women placed in the four directions, with angels as witnesses. Nibley showed that the further back in history one looks, the more prominent the prayer circle becomes — until the Second Council of Nicaea (787 AD) condemned the documents containing it.Q: Does Stonehenge have anything to do with temple worship?A: This episode draws parallels between Stonehenge and Latter-day Saint temple worship: both are circular sacred spaces with inner and outer courts; both are oriented to the sun, moon, and stars (corresponding to the three degrees of glory in Doctrine and Covenants 76); Stonehenge's sarsen stones were shaped white and bright when new (like temple clothing); it contains an altar stone brought from a great distance; and the dead were buried within the sacred precinct — ancestors present at the place of worship. English Heritage describes Stonehenge as a site for "ritual or ceremonial performances, sacrifices, initiation, or death rites."Q: Is there a prayer circle in the Book of Mormon?A: In 3 Nephi 17, the Savior commands that little children be brought and set on the ground around him. He takes his place in the midst, commands the multitude to kneel, and kneels himself to offer a prayer to the Father so sacred it could not be written. After the prayer, the heavens open and angels descend "in the midst of fire" and encircle the children, ministering to them — a pattern matching the ancient prayer circle's elements of a central figure, a surrounding circle, prayer to the Father, and angelic ministry.Q: Why do we see echoes of temple worship in ancient cultures worldwide?A: President Joseph F. Smith taught that "the knowledge of this law of sacrifice and of other rites and ceremonies was carried by the posterity of Adam into all lands and continued with them, more or less pure, to the flood and through Noah." This episode argues that Stonehenge, Thornborough, and other circular monuments preserve these echoes — sacred spaces oriented to celestial bodies, restricted to the worthy, associated with the dead, covered in white, and centered on sacrifice and worship.YouTube: Ancient Prayer Circles Video: https://youtu.be/dnPHoU-VWtgYouTube Thinning of the Veil Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thinningoftheveilSUPPORT THE SHOW: Website: Thinning of the Veil: https://www.thinningoftheveil.com/Venmo:  https://account.venmo.com/u/thinningoftheveilPayPal: https://paypal.me/thinningoftheveil?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USBook: "Patterns of Revelation":  https://www.amazon.com/Patterns-Revelation-Spiritual-Foundations-Hearing-ebook/dp/B0BWGLZ8VXEmail: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/thinning.of.the.veil/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thinning.of.the.veil/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thinning.of.the.veilCITATIONS:Joseph F. Endowed with Power | What the Temple Endowment Is Really For — Peter B. Rawlins, BYU 2012 (LDS)

Send us Fan Mail What is the endowment really for — and does it have a purpose beyond personal salvation? Peter B. Rawlins, retired director of proselytizing in the Church's missionary department, argues in this BYU article that virtually all scriptural references to the endowment are in the context of missionary work — and that its primary, immediate purpose is to empower the Saints to fulfill the mission of the Church on both sides of the veil, not only to prepare them for eternity. In January 1831, the Lord gave two reasons for gathering the Saints to Ohio: "There I will give unto you my law" and "there you shall be endowed with power from on high" — power to go forth among all nations. Without the power, the law would be ineffectual. The article traces each temple ordinance to its missionary dimension: washing cleanses us not only from our own sins but from the blood and sins of this generation (making us accountable as watchmen); anointing confers the same Holy Ghost power with which Jesus "went about doing good"; the endowment itself parallels ordination to the priesthood — not just authority, but real, usable, God's-own power to work for the salvation of others. President Boyd K. Packer's observation anchors the urgency: "We have priesthood authority planted nearly everywhere. But distributing the authority of the priesthood has raced ahead of distributing the power of the priesthood." Tia adds her own witness throughout: when we perform these ordinances for our ancestors, we are giving them the same missionary power — enabling them to become emissaries of Christ in the spirit world, where the work cannot move forward without the endowment we provide.Q: What is the purpose of the temple endowment, according to LDS teaching?A: Peter B. Rawlins argues from scripture that the endowment's primary purpose is not merely personal preparation for eternity, but empowerment for missionary service — now. In the Doctrine and Covenants, the phrase "endowed with power from on high" is almost always used in the context of preaching the gospel and building the kingdom. Joseph Smith taught: "The endowment was to prepare the disciples for their missions unto the world."Q: What is the difference between priesthood authority and priesthood power?A: President Boyd K. Packer observed: "We have priesthood authority planted nearly everywhere. But distributing the authority of the priesthood has raced ahead of distributing the power of the priesthood." Authority is the right to act; power is the actual capacity to do so effectively. The temple endowment is designed to bridge this gap — conferring not just authorization but real, enabling power from God.Q: How does temple work empower ancestors in the spirit world?A: Tia Smith adds throughout this reading that the same power the endowment confers on the living — the Holy Ghost, the anointing, priesthood power — is conferred on ancestors when their ordinances are performed vicariously. Without these ordinances, they cannot serve as effective missionaries in the spirit world; with them, they are empowered to preach the gospel to those who have not yet received it (Doctrine and Covenants 138).Q: What does "clean from the blood of this generation" mean?A: The washing ordinance relates to the watchman principle from Ezekiel: God holds us responsible for the sins of those we failed to warn when we had the knowledge and opportunity. If we faithfully proclaim the gospel, we are cleansed from that responsibility. President John Taylor taught: "If you do not magnify your callings, God will hold you responsible for those whom you might have saved had you done your duty." Healing for the Dead and for the Living | Temple Work Heals Families on Both Sides of the Veil (LDS)

Send us Fan MailCan temple work heal what seems unhealable — a grandfather's suicide, a family connection to Governor Boggs, and a broken marriage? This Story Day episode shares three testimonies from Kim Olsen that witness the stunning capacity of temple blessings to heal hearts, lives, and families on both sides of the veil, as Elder Dale G. Renlund taught (April 2018). In the first, Kim's grandfather, suffering from terminal cancer without adequate pain medication in the early 1960s, took his own life — and her beloved grandmother went to her grave believing he was condemned to hell. A member of the temple presidency told Kim the beauty of the gospel is the infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ, which reaches beyond the veil. When her husband was baptized for her grandfather, "a powerful spirit filled the room like a whoosh" — and thirty-one years later, Kim says, she can still feel their joy. In the second, genealogy research revealed that Kim's grandmother was related to the family of Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs, who issued the extermination order against the Saints. After years of resisting, her heart was softened: "I myself had needed the forgiveness and cleansing only to be gotten through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Could I deny my ancestors this same blessing?" She could not — even if their last name was Boggs. In the third, Kim's ex-husband died, and her deceased mother appeared in her daughter's dream saying he "needed her." After much prayer, Kim's current husband performed the baptism for her ex-husband — and in that moment, "everything that had been wrong in our relationship was washed away." The episode also includes Tia's own testimony of receiving ancestral names at 4:30 a.m. in a dream — three names from three different family lines, all found on FamilySearch, all related to her."Everything that had been wrong in our relationship was washed away. A new existence could begin for him, our daughter, and even me." — Kim OlsenQ: Can temple work heal families broken by suicide, conflict, or estrangement?A: Kim Olsen testifies that it can. Her grandfather took his own life in 1961, and her grandmother spent the rest of her life believing he was in hell. When the temple ordinances were performed, "a powerful spirit filled the room" — and both grandparents were freed from decades of pain. Elder Dale G. Renlund taught (April 2018) that "the blessings of the temple have a stunning capacity to heal hearts and lives and families."Q: Do I have to do temple work for ancestors I don't want to help?A: Kim Olsen discovered she was related to the family of Governor Boggs, who issued the Missouri extermination order against the Latter-day Saints. After years of resistance, her heart softened: temple work is the Lord's work, not ours, and everyone deserves the chance to accept the gospel. Her husband reminded her: "Our responsibility was to perform the ordinances for our kindred dead, no matter who they are, and leave the rest to the Lord."Q: Can a deceased parent appear in a dream to ask for temple work?A: In this episode, Kim's deceased mother appeared in her Catholic daughter's dream and told her that her father "needed her." Through prayer and patience, Kim discovered her ex-husband's temple work could now be done, received her daughter's permission, and her current husband performed the baptism — an act that washed away a lifetime of conflict and reconciled a broken family across the veil.📚 SOURCES REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODEElder Dale G.
