The idea was repentance and reform, but the reality was mental breakdown, despair, and cruelty. Even Charles Dickens, after visiting, condemned it as “immeasurably worse than any torture of the body.”Through the decades, Eastern State housed over 75,000 prisoners, including the notorious Al Capone, and became known for harsh punishments, riots, and violence. It closed in 1971, but many believe the spirits of those who suffered there never left. Visitors and staff report shadow figures slipping along the walls, disembodied voices, ghostly faces, and cold spots that chill you to the bone.
