The Fear of Expansion

from The Spiritual Shitshow Podcast · host Julie Nguyen

Send us Fan MailThe hardest part of growth isn’t always the pain, it’s the moment you realize you might be ready for more. I had a realization this week that felt equal parts liberating and annoying: I keep thinking about my estrangement from my sister, and I keep asking when it ends. When do I stop replaying it, grieving it, trying to understand it, especially when the person is still alive? Then something clicked. Maybe the problem isn’t that the thought returns. Maybe the problem is believing I can’t move forward until it never comes back.I talk about why healing isn’t linear and why I’ve stopped treating “healing” like a lifelong identity or a project to complete. Growth moves in spirals, with expansion and contraction like breath and tides. When an old wound resurfaces, it can feel like failure, but it might be evidence that you’re expanding because you meet the same story with new awareness, more softness, and more compassion than before. Then we go deeper into the part nobody warns you about: the fear of expansion. Contraction is familiar. I know how to survive. But stepping into power, confidence, and a fuller expression of myself brings up fear fast, especially when the last time I felt powerful, life blew apart. We unpack the vulnerability of becoming, the vulnerability of being seen in your greatness, and why the dream can be more tender than the wound. If you’ve been stuck asking “What do I still need to heal?”, I offer a different question: Who am I becoming, and can I let her emerge? If this lands, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s in their own spiral, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Support the show✨ Thank you for tuning into this episode of Spiritual Shitshow!
