The Five Levels of Leadership
from The Health and Sport Show
If you are in a position of leadership or considering one in your future, Tom talks about what is required to excel in the top position. In the context of his own experiences he explains the five levels of leadership as borrowed from expert John Maxwell (link below). They denote the level of expertise, trust, personal knowledge and achievement you will need to have with your client to inspire and inform their success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leadership level 1. Position level. You are leader due to your expertise, knowledge or skill that is required to fix the clients problem, but they will not continue once their immediate problem is fixed. Leadership level 2. Permission level. Now the client will follow your lead because they want to, as they believe you can lead them as an expert to the outcome that they want. They trust you allowing a deeper level of interaction. Leadership level 3. Production level. This is the point where you have produced results for your client. They have solid evidence of your expertise. This means being clear on both sides expectations. Leadership level 4. People development level. This is where we inspire those that have followed us to turn into leaders themselves. Leadership level 5. Pinnacle level. This is a lofty target. You need to achieve success consistently and become an expert in your field with a well proven track record. BEST MOMENTS ‘What made us special as a group forged my ideas on leadership even before John Maxwell confirmed it to me in his work. I now see my clients as my team mates and I still contain that willingness to run through a brick wall for them.’ ‘The client follows me because they have to at this stage and for no other reason.’ ‘We also want to know about you. There’s a person attached to that neck or to that knee or to that shoulder problem and that persons got hopes, dreams, aspirations, doubts and fears.’ ‘The biggest issue at this level, or I think one of the biggest stumbling blocks anyway, is not being clear on what the clients expectations are and what the therapists expectations are.’ ‘People tend to follow these level 5 leaders because of what they’ve done and what they continue to do and never seem to rest on their success.’ EPISODE RESOURCES John Maxwell - (1) John Maxwell The 5 Levels of Leadership - YouTube Kinetic Foundation - Kinetic Foundation - Registered Charity: 1151315 | Kinetic Academy (kinetic-foundation.org.uk) VALUABLE RESOURCES https://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbA https://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/ https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/ https://instagram.com/elevate_healthuk?utm_medium=copy_link ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player.
