During a decade of frequently mean-spirited films, The Gate is the opposite, complete with a happy ending. The film is an unexpected showcase of special effects for the time — stop-motion animation, forced perspective, practical effects, suit actors, and matte paintings — seamlessly integrated into the world of the 12- to 16-year-old characters. If you haven't seen The Gate for a while, it might be time to check it out. You might come away with a different point of view. The Grue Crew certainly did.
