Carolina Republicans Keith Kidwell and Ben Moss introduced House Bill 1232, which would declare that life begins at fertilization, punish abortion patients as murderers, ban IVF and some forms of birth control, and authorize the use of “deadly force” to defend a fertilized egg. As written, it could shield someone who kills an abortion provider, a clinic volunteer, or a person who helps someone access care. After backlash, one sponsor removed his name, claiming the language was misunderstood.A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, examining over 123,000 patients, found that abortion bans are degrading miscarriage care. In ban states, miscarrying patients were more likely to be sent home to “wait and see” and less likely to receive mifepristone, the standard medication, because it is the same drug used in abortions. The result is prolonged miscarriages and increased risk of hemorrhage and sepsis.A fringe group called the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds), a roughly 500-member organization designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, coined the term “sex-rejecting procedures” to attack gender-affirming care. ACPeds is frequently mistaken for the legitimate American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which has 64,000 members.
