The Heartbreak of Self-Betrayal

from Fully Expressed with Ayesha Hilton Podcast · host Ayesha Hilton

There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that comes from constantly pouring into someone who is not pouring back into you.Not because relationships are perfectly equal all the time. They aren’t. We all carry each other at different points in life. But healthy love still feels mutual. There is care on both sides.Respect for each other’s humanity.A genuine desire to see the other person thrive.True empowerment can never be entirely one-sided.For deeply individual souls like us, love is not about disappearing into another person. It’s not about shrinking yourself, abandoning yourself, or molding yourself into whatever keeps the relationship intact. It’s about two imperfect people standing beside each other, fully themselves, while encouraging one another to grow. The healthiest relationships quietly say:I see who you are.You see who I am.I want your life to expand. You want the same for me.Both people feel free to evolve. To speak honestly. To have their own identity inside the relationship without it becoming a threat. There is honesty.Freedom to be fully themselves.A sense that the relationship makes life bigger, not smaller.People who value authenticity tend to stay deeply committed to what feels real, aligned, and emotionally honest. But one of the most painful experiences is giving your love, energy, encouragement, and belief to someone who never truly recognizes your value in return.I know what it feels like to slowly disappear inside a relationship while convincing yourself you’re just trying harder to make it work.Over time, that imbalance changes you.You begin questioning yourself.Dimming parts of yourself.Working harder for crumbs of validation that should never have required so much effort in the first place.Eventually, it becomes emotionally exhausting trying to earn what should flow naturally inside love.Because beneath all of it, what many people are really longing for is to be fully seen, understood and appreciated. To feel like their partner has chosen them without having to earn it constantly. And here’s the biggest one, for me at least:To feel safe being fully themselves inside the relationship.I think one of the saddest things that can happen in a relationship is slowly losing connection with yourself while trying to preserve the connection with someone else.Silencing parts of yourself.Making yourself smaller.Needing less.Wanting less.Speaking less honestly.Until one day you realize you no longer feel fully alive inside your own life.Real love should not require self-abandonment.The healthiest relationships create more self-expression, not less. They make you feel safer in your truth.Safer in your voice.Safer being who you really are.Because being fully expressed is not just about creativity, purpose, or finding your voice publicly. It’s also about being in relationships where you do not have to betray yourself in order to be loved. How can we live fully expressed if we are diminishing ourselves in our relationship?I have done it myself. And it can happen so easily that you don’t realize it until you are deep down the path of abandoning yourself. Here’s to living a fully expressed life!LoveAyesha xoxJoin a growing community of midlife women who are done playing small and ready to express their soul’s music in Substack.fullyexpressedwithayesha.substack.com Get full access to Fully Expressed with Ayesha Hilton at fullyexpressedwithayesha.substack.com/subscribe
