In October 1216, King John’s baggage train, reportedly carrying the English crown jewels and a vast treasury, was allegedly swallowed by the treacherous tides and whirlpools of the Wash estuary. While historical legends blame a tragic accident, alternative theories suggest a calculated conspiracy where the riches were stolen or hidden at a secure location, such as Wrangle Castle. Despite centuries of intensive archaeological searches and the use of modern technology like LiDAR, no trace of the treasure has been found, leaving its existence and ultimate fate a subject of intense debate.
