California Prop 12, the animal welfare bill, was deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court on May 11 of this year. The new law has an effective date of July 1. California processors, retailers, foodservice, and anyone dealing with pork have been buying anything they can get their hands on and getting it shipped prior to the July 1 deadline. This has tossed the whole industry upside down, prices have shot up quickly, product availability is all of the sudden tight, and just to beat the July 1 deadline.
