The Interconnection of Ṣalãt and Struggles: Lessons from Karbala

- Namaz, especially of Imam Ḥusayn, symbolizes the greater jihad (al-jihad al-akbar), while armed struggle in Karbala represents the lesser jihad (al-jihãd al-ashgar). - True jihad asghar (minor struggle) relies on jihad akbar (major struggle). Namaz is a reflection of jihad akbar and is foundational for jihad asghar. - The second caliph’s omission of “ḥayya ‘ala khayril ‘amal” from adhan and iqamah weakened the connection between namaz and jihad, prioritizing wars of conquest. - Islam requires a mujahid (warrior) who performs namaz, and a namazi (prayer performer) who is prepared for jihad. The lack of this connection leads to extremism. - Both involve struggles—external (body) in jihad and internal (soul) in namaz. Namaz has a structure similar to a military organization, with an imam and congregants. - The example of Ḥurr, who decided to pray behind Imam Ḥusayn, shows how namaz can lead to transformation and resolve. - Imam Ḥusayn’s dedication to namaz is highlighted by his request to postpone the battle to pray, showing his love for prayer and devotion to God. - Despite the battle, Imam Ḥusayn and his companions did not neglect namaz, exemplifying the combination of jihad akbar and jihad asghar. - Namaz shaped the character and discipline of Imam Ḥusayn’s followers, contributing to their unity, organization, and ultimate stand against a vastly larger enemy force.
