The Leader As A Coach with Jade Green and Kyle Probert

All leaders yearn to build their people and business and run them strongly like a Super Bowl football team. In this episode of Team:Engineered, Kyle Probert and I share our insights on building a group where members play with the logo on the front of their jersey rather than the name on their back. A good captain never takes all of the glory for themselves. [00:08:08] It's always clever playing to each member's strengths and knowing when's the right time to pull those levers. This strategy is seen from the military to football teams that we should also apply in our departments. [00:10:15] The team leader is on the workshop floor with the crew doing the same drills. They may have to make the plays and keep the motivation, but ultimately they're still in the same team, whereas the difference of coach is being able to see the bigger picture and directing the team to make the proper steps. [00:15:16] Every person plays an equally important role. And that should not be the marker of success. The role of a leader, the manager, is to coach and look at what's working, what's not working, and the person's individual strengths.[00:16:14] We often end up pushing people into the wrong position. And it kills their soul, and then their work suffers. Be careful that you don't just promote someone because they're great at their task but focus on the actual skills needed to do that particular job.[00:22:19] Empower that person in your team who can change the energy and bring good vibes. Every team needs fun as well. That role is never really assigned, yet it can be an actual contribution. So [00:26:07] If you're on the frontlines doing the nuts and bolts and pumping the grease and all that sort of stuff, you can't necessarily see the reason what the hell for. The important thing is is that the coach knows, firstly, that that's the job for you and that you can do it effectively.[00:32:06] The key thing that the manager (as the coach) needs to keep in mind is that there's a time where they need to be directly involved with their workers. And there's a time when they need to trust the next in line (the captain) to take their instructions.
