The leadership lessons experience teaches you | Authenticity, judgement & change | Eric Morris

from Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO

In this episode of the Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO Podcast, I connected with Eric Morris, Non-Executive Director, Chair and former CEO, to explore authentic leadership, culture, decision-making and the lessons shaped by decades of growth, disruption and change. After 18 years as a CEO across retail and consumer businesses, one of Eric’s strongest reminders was to trust your instincts. Experience teaches us to recognise when something, or someone, is not quite right, yet leaders often delay difficult decisions hoping the situation will improve. Eric’s lesson was clear: waiting rarely makes the decision easier, and some of his greatest frustrations came from giving people or problems too long to change. He also challenged the familiar phrase, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.”“If it’s not broken, assess it.” Businesses can become so attached to what worked before that they fail to notice the world changing around them. Continuous improvement means questioning what still serves the customer, culture and future before disruption forces the decision.Listening matters, explaining the why matters and involving people matters, yet leadership still requires someone to make the call. Eric also shared that one of the greatest risks to any organisation is the disengaged employee who stays, weakening trust, energy and performance. At the centre of Eric’s leadership philosophy is authenticity. He has seen leaders spend enormous energy acting like the title they hold, when the most trusted form of leadership is simply showing up as yourself.Eric believes that if people never make mistakes, they may not be stretching far enough. The lesson is not to defend the mistake or protect the ego: “Address it, don’t justify it.”THE SHAPE SHIFT IN MOTIONAt the heart of this conversation was a shift from performing leadership towards practising it with greater authenticity, judgement and courage.LEARN (LETTING GO)✨ The belief that leaders need to be good at everything.✨ The temptation to delay difficult decisions and hope problems resolve themselves.✨ The assumption that what worked before will continue working tomorrow.UNLEARN (CREATE, REIMAGINE & RESHAPE)✨ Reimagine authenticity as a leadership advantage rather than a vulnerability.✨ Reshape culture through listening, clarity and action rather than surveys alone.✨ Replace defensiveness with the courage to address mistakes directly.RELEARN (TEST & IMPLEMENT)✨ Trust your instincts, then make the decision.✨ Explain the why without needing everyone to agree.✨ Create space to think, seek trusted counsel and remain steady when pressure rises.ACTIVE RECOVERY (REFLECT & RESET)✨ What decision are you delaying even though you already know the answer?✨ Where has familiarity become complacency?✨ Are you leading as yourself, or performing the role you think others expect?🔗 https://www.linkedin.com/in/eric-morris-2b97656a/🌐 https://albanyadvisory.com.au💭 What changes when you stop looking like a leader and start being one?If something is shifting in your business, leadership or growth journey, start with a Strategic Shape Shift Diagnostic:https://calendly.com/beeformless/strategicshapeshiftdiagnostic#beeformless #flowdrivencee #authenticity #lessons #ceo #culture #decisionmaking #businessgrowth
