The Lotus Sutra and Mindfulness Meditation
from 琉璃心The Mindful Heart /Mindfulness Meditation
The Mindful Heart Podcast Season 6 · Episode 7 The Lotus Sutra “At that time, Bodhisattva Maitreya thought to himself: ‘Now the World-Honored One displays these miraculous signs. For what cause and condition has such an auspicious manifestation appeared? The Buddha has entered samādhi this is inconceivable, a rare event. Whom should I ask? Who can answer this?’ He then reflected further: ‘Mañjuśrī, the son of the Dharma King, has attended and made offerings to countless Buddhas in the past. He must have seen such signs before. I shall now ask him.’” Sometimes, life presents us with moments like this unexpected changes, unexplainable emotions, situations we cannot fully grasp. Our instinct is to rush toward answers, to force understanding, to resolve uncertainty as quickly as possible. But Maitreya did not. He paused. He observed. He questioned without clinging to his own conclusions. And then, he turned toward wisdom. This is not just a passage from a sutra. It is a way of meeting life. Mindfulness Practice Take a moment to sit quietly. Let your breath move naturally. Breathing in know that you are breathing in. Breathing out know that you are breathing out. When a thought arises, do not push it away. Simply ask: “Where did this thought come from?” No need to answer. Just observe. When you stop forcing understanding, clarity begins to emerge. You may discover the answer is not something you find, but something that appears when you return to awareness. May we all learn from Maitreya to remain undisturbed in the face of change, to question without confusion, and to keep a steady and clear mind amidst the noise of the world.
