    The Mindful Heart Podcast- Season 6, Episode 9 The Lotus Sutra and Learning to See the Light Within There is a moment in the Lotus Sutra where the entire assembly-monastics, lay practitioners, devas, dragons, and unseen beings-witnesses a vast light radiating from the Buddha, illuminating countless worlds. And yet, instead of certainty, a question arises: “What is this? And who can we ask?” Even Maitreya Bodhisattva does not rush to answer. He pauses. He observes the minds of the whole assembly. And then, he turns to Manjushri Bodhisattva the embodiment of wisdom and asks: “By what causes and conditions does this light appear, illuminating so many worlds in their full clarity?” This episode is not about supernatural light. It is about something far more precise: the moment awareness begins. In today’s mindfulness practice, we don’t try to interpret the sutra-we use it. We observe three things: 1.The question 2.The light 3.The adornment - seeing without judgment When a thought arises, instead of following it, we pause and ask: Where did this come from? This is the practice. On this sacred day, we also honor the birthday of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Samantabhadra represents the unity of wisdom and action-the perfect integration of understanding and practice and embodies the great vows that guide all beings toward awakening. Often regarded as the source of all Buddhas’ vows and conduct, his path reminds us: Insight alone is not enough. Clarity must become action. To see clearly is wisdom. To live it, moment by moment, is the vow. The Buddha’s light is not something distant. It is the moment you notice a thought before it becomes a story. It is the space where awareness expands beyond habit. Take 15 minutes today. Sit. Breathe. Observe. And you may begin to see what the sutra has been pointing to all along.     The Mindful Heart Podcast Season 6 · Episode 7 The Lotus Sutra “At that time, Bodhisattva Maitreya thought to himself: ‘Now the World-Honored One displays these miraculous signs. For what cause and condition has such an auspicious manifestation appeared? The Buddha has entered samādhi this is inconceivable, a rare event. Whom should I ask? Who can answer this?’ He then reflected further: ‘Mañjuśrī, the son of the Dharma King, has attended and made offerings to countless Buddhas in the past. He must have seen such signs before. I shall now ask him.’” Sometimes, life presents us with moments like this unexpected changes, unexplainable emotions, situations we cannot fully grasp. Our instinct is to rush toward answers, to force understanding, to resolve uncertainty as quickly as possible. But Maitreya did not. He paused. He observed. He questioned without clinging to his own conclusions. And then, he turned toward wisdom. This is not just a passage from a sutra. It is a way of meeting life. Mindfulness Practice Take a moment to sit quietly. Let your breath move naturally. Breathing in know that you are breathing in. Breathing out know that you are breathing out. When a thought arises, do not push it away. Simply ask: “Where did this thought come from?” No need to answer. Just observe. When you stop forcing understanding, clarity begins to emerge. You may discover the answer is not something you find, but something that appears when you return to awareness. May we all learn from Maitreya to remain undisturbed in the face of change, to question without confusion, and to keep a steady and clear mind amidst the noise of the world.     The Mindful Heart Podcast Season 6 Episode 6 Today we reflect on a passage from the Lotus Sutra. “At that time the Buddha emitted a ray of light from the white curl between his eyebrows, illuminating eighteen thousand worlds in the east, reaching everywhere without exception— down to the Avīci Hell and up to the Akaniṣṭha Heaven. Within those worlds were seen beings of the six realms, the Buddhas presently teaching the Dharma, monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen practicing the path, and great bodhisattvas walking the bodhisattva way. One could see the Buddhas entering parinirvāṇa, and after their passing, stupas of seven treasures raised to enshrine their sacred relics.” In mindfulness practice, this radiant light is not distant or mythical. It is the light of awareness. When we breathe calmly, when we see suffering with compassion, when we choose kindness in a troubled world: the Buddha’s light continues to shine. Today we sit together in quiet reflection. Breathing in, I touch the peace within. Breathing out, I share that peace with the world. May wisdom arise. May compassion guide us. This week’s episode is about letting go-not running away, but gently seeing things for what they are, and loosening the grip we didn’t realize we were holding. Last Friday, I attended the premiere of The World Between Us 2, a deeply moving Taiwanese drama now streaming across 240 countries via Amazon Prime Video. In the show, there’s a mental health facility called Chingyun mental health hospital-a space for reflection, for breakdown, for healing. That fictional place is based on a real one: an oil painting I created last year, late at night, in solitude. I painted it because I, too, needed a place to rest my mind. Somehow, that image made its way into the show’s visual language-just as our quiet intentions often ripple further than we expect. This episode centers on a line from the Diamond Sutra: “A composite form cannot truly be spoken of. But ordinary people become attached to it.” When we say: “I failed.” “They hurt me.” “This is who I am.” -we’re clinging to a composite form: a temporary bundle of feelings, memories, stories, and physical reactions. We treat that moment as the whole truth. But mindfulness gently reminds us: These identities are assembled, moment by moment. They are not fixed. And they are not who we truly are. In this episode, I’ll guide you through a simple mindfulness practice to help you see these “composite forms” clearly-then let them go, breath by breath. In this episode, we return to a moment where breath, movement, and emptiness met in perfect stillness. On April 12th, I performed a mindful ballet at the opening of the Art Exhibition at Taichung Girls’ Senior High School. This performance was not just an offering of movement, but a living reflection of the Diamond Sutra’s teaching: that even infinite worlds can be reduced to dust, and from that dust, clarity and compassion may arise. Inspired by this, we will also guide a short Dust Meditation, rooted in the Diamond Sutra’s famous metaphor "If all worlds were ground into fine particles, would there be many atoms?" Now The Mindful Heart is listened to in a total of 81 countries, where we read the Diamond Sutra together and take all of you to practice mindful yoga. Starting in November, the host of the mindful Heart will hold an art exhibition at the centennial campus of Tainan Girls’ Senior High School, inspired by the works of Dutch artist Jan Derk Diekema from Groningen. The opening event will feature a mindful ballet performance, and everyone is warmly invited to attend and show their support.  One of the paintings in this exhibition depicts the Cundi Bodhisattva statue at Zhu Xi Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Taiwan, built during the Ming Dynasty. We look forward to everyone appreciating it. This painting was exhibited in old palaces in Spain and Italy. We welcome friends who support podcast the mindful heart to come and admire the artwork.
