The Man in the Mirror | Ep. 5
from Nobody · host Words of Hope, Affirmation and Resilience
Nobody – Episode 5: The Man in the MirrorWelcome back to Nobody.Today, I want to ask you a question that I've spent years trying to avoid.Who is the hardest person you'll ever have to confront? It's probably not your boss. Not your spouse. Not your parents. Not the person who betrayed you. It's the person staring back at you in the mirror.Because the mirror doesn't care about our excuses. It doesn't applaud our stories. It simply reflects what's there. And if we're honest...Most of us don't spend much time looking. There's an old saying that goes something like this:"Wherever you go... there you are."I used to think changing my circumstances would change my life.A better job.More money.A different city.A new relationship.A bigger house.A fresh start. And sometimes those things do help. But eventually, I noticed a pattern. No matter where I went...I took myself with me.The scenery changed. The baggage didn't.The zip code changed. The habits didn't.The faces changed. The fears didn't.That's when I realized something uncomfortable. The common denominator in every chapter of my life......was me.Now before you misunderstand me...This isn't about guilt. It's not about pretending that bad things haven't happened.People hurt us.Life is unfair. Some wounds are inflicted by others. That's real. But here's the question that changed my life. After the wound...What happened next?Did I let it define me?Did I build walls around it?Did I keep choosing the same patterns because they felt familiar? At some point...The responsibility for my healing became mine. Not because I caused the pain. But because I was the only one who could choose what happened next. That's a hard truth. But it's also an incredibly freeing one.Have you ever noticed how easy it is to diagnose everyone else's problems? We see their pride.Their impatience.Their insecurity.Their controlling behavior.Their selfishness. We can spot it from a mile away. But when it comes to ourselves...We're masters of explanation. They're arrogant.I'm just confident. They're controlling.I'm just trying to help. They're stubborn.I know what's right. They're emotional.I'm passionate. It's amazing how generous we are with ourselves......and how demanding we are with everyone else.Ego is a fascinating thing. We often think ego means thinking you're better than everyone else.Sometimes it does. But ego can also look like constant self-pity.Constant comparison.Constant fear of what other people think.Because ego isn't just thinking too highly of yourself. It's thinking about yourself all the time. When every room is about how you're being perceived...Every conversation becomes exhausting.Every criticism feels like an attack.Every disagreement becomes personal. And suddenly you're not living. You're managing an image.I once heard someone say,"You don't see the world as it is. You see it as you are."That stopped me in my tracks.Maybe the reason I kept seeing rejection everywhere......was because I already believed I wasn't enough.Maybe the reason I assumed people were judging me......was because I was judging myself.Maybe the reason I couldn't trust others......was because I hadn't learned to trust myself. The mirror wasn't showing me everyone else.It was showing me me.Let's talk about blind spots.Every car has them. You can be the best driver in the world...And if you ignore your blind spot...You're eventually going to hit something.People have blind spots too.Pride.Fear.Bitterness.Control.People-pleasing.Perfectionism.Workaholism.We don't see them because they've become normal. That's why honest friends are such a gift. That's why mentors matter. That's why therapy can change lives.Sometimes we need someone else to gently say,"There's something you're not seeing."Not to shame us.To help us grow. One of the biggest breakthroughs in my own life came when I stopped asking,
