The Nature of an Authority Relationship

In this episode of my Leadership Behaviour Podcast, I explore the true nature of authority in leadership, emphasising that holding a position of authority does not automatically make someone an effective leader. True leadership involves mobilising people to face and overcome complex challenges, not merely wielding power. The episode discusses the difference between formal and informal authority, highlights that authority is a social contract built on trust, and stresses that authority is meant to serve others, not to be an end in itself. I also reflected on how over-reliance on formal authority can hinder leadership and encouraged listeners to develop key personal skills—like trust, connection, and reliability—to lead more effectively beyond titles.
