The Philosophy of Heraclitus and the River of Change for Sleep
from Sleepy Philosophy · host Sleepy Philosophy
In the quiet stillness before sleep, this calm philosophy episode explores Heraclitus and the river of change. Twenty-five centuries ago, in the Greek city of Ephesus, a philosopher looked at a river and saw the shape of all things. You cannot step twice into the same river, he said, for fresh waters are ever flowing on. Heraclitus believed this was true not of rivers alone, but of everything that exists. All things flow. Nothing stays fixed. Tonight, beside a dark river moving steadily beneath the moon, we begin to loosen our grip on permanence. Many of us know the ache of wanting to hold things still, and the unrest when they change regardless. Heraclitus offered a gentler understanding. Change, he saw, is not an intruder disturbing a stable world, but the very fabric of a living one; the river is only a river because it flows. Our suffering, then, comes less from change itself than from resisting it, from clinging to a stillness the world does not offer. Yet beneath the flux he saw an underlying order, the Logos, a hidden harmony holding the ceaseless change together, so that the flow is not chaos but a kind of music we belong to.There is nothing you must hold still tonight. All things flow, and you can release your grip on permanence and let the current carry you gently into sleep.
