The Polish Army That Enlisted a Bear

from Unlocking the Unknown · host Atlas Gray

Following the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, hundreds of thousands of citizens were deported to labour camps before a 1941 amnesty allowed for their release and the formation of Anders' Army. This military force, known as the 2nd Polish Corps, fought with high distinction during the Italian Campaign, most notably securing victory at the Battle of Monte Cassino. After the war, many veterans were unable to return to their communist-occupied homeland and instead settled in Britain and Canada. In London, Ontario, these former combatants established the Polish Hall at 80 Ann Street to serve as a cultural anchor for their displaced community. Current efforts seek heritage designation for this building to preserve the legacy of the veterans and their difficult journey from the Gulags to Western exile. Other fragments within the text mention technical data regarding Soviet energy and power during the conflict.
