The power of micro reforms in the public service

from Accountabili-TEA Podcast · host Accountability Lab

In this episode we take a deep dive into the reforms of two of our incredible Integrity Icons from Pakistan and South Africa, Assistant Superintendent of Police Amna Baig and Social Worker Unathi Filita.  In Pakistan, millions of women don't report crimes like assault because they aren't comfortable sharing these kinds of details with male police officers. They also don't know that police officers like ASP Amna Baig - one of a growing number of female police officers - exist! ASP Baig is trying to turn this tide with the creation of a free helpline and a mobile force of female officers who visit women wanting to report crimes, removing the cultural and social impediments that sometimes prevent women from visiting police stations. Unathi is a Social Worker for the Department of Social Development in South Africa who is passionate about serving members of his community in the town of Uitenhage. In Uitenhage, residents would often be sent from one government office to another trying to access social services such as gender-based violence intervention, HIV/AIDS testing and elderly care, often leading to difficulty and frustration. Unathi decided to address this problem by bringing all these services together in one location so that residents now no longer have to travel long distances seeking help from relevant social workers.
