The Pruning of God and the Mountains of Impossibility

Are there places in our lives where we have quietly settled for something less than the freedom and fruitfulness Jesus paid for? In this message, Debbie takes us into John 15 and Jesus’ picture of the vine, the branches and the Father as the gardener. Through the agricultural language of grafting and pruning, she explores what it means to be joined to Christ as a new creation, and then to remain in Him as the Father continues the work of cutting away what needs to die and cleansing what He wants to make even more fruitful. Some things in us simply need to be put to death. But there are also good things — gifts, callings, passions and desires that genuinely came from God — that can become entangled with wounds, unhealthy motives and old ways of protecting ourselves. A desire for excellence can become driven by performance. A genuine love for people can become tangled with a need for acceptance. The answer is not to destroy the gift, but to allow the Father to lovingly prune and cleanse it so that what He originally placed within us can bear the fruit it was designed to produce. Debbie also explores Jesus’ repeated command to remain or abide in Him. The Greek word meno describes something active — an ongoing movement of the heart towards relationship and intimacy with God. Abiding isn’t striving, but neither is it passive. It is a continuing choice to stay connected to Him, listen to Him, and yield to what He wants to reveal and transform. This message carries a challenge for those places where we may have stopped believing change is possible. The recurring struggles, wounds or patterns we’ve put into the “too hard basket” can quietly become mountains of impossibility within us. Previous breakthrough doesn’t mean the journey is finished, and what God dealt with last year isn’t necessarily all He wants to do this year. The invitation is to refuse to settle. To remain in Him, yield again to the Father’s pruning, and allow the blood of Jesus to cleanse everything that has become entangled with what He originally created as good. The Father’s pruning is not about diminishing us. It is about making us fruitful.
